PIPELINE TO THE SEC
The states that produce the most SEC talent, based on current two-deep offensive
and defensive depth charts:

1. Georgia - 86
2. Florida - 84
3. Alabama - 66
4. Louisiana - 46
5. Tennessee - 39
6. Texas - 37
7. Mississippi - 36
8. South Carolina - 33
9. Arkansas - 22
10. Kentucky - 20

TEAM PIPELINE
Where the 12 SEC teams draw the majority of their talent from, based on current
two-deep offensive and defensive depth charts:

ALABAMA - Alabama (20), Florida (8), Georgia (5)
ARKANSAS - Arkansas (18), Texas (9), Georgia (4), Louisiana (4)
AUBURN - Alabama (21), Florida (9), Georgia (6)
FLORIDA - Florida (25), Georgia (6), North Carolina (3), New Jersey (3)
GEORGIA - Georgia (28), Florida (5), Alabama (2, Missouri (2), South Carolina (2)
KENTUCKY - Kentucky (15), Tennessee (7), Georgia (6)
LSU - Louisiana (25), Texas (8), Florida (4)
OLE MISS - Mississippi (12), Louisiana (10), Florida (6)
MISSISSIPPI STATE - Mississippi (19), Alabama (19), Florida (6)
SOUTH CAROLINA - South Carolina (22), Florida (9), North Carolina (7)
TENNESSEE - Tennessee (13), Georgia (6), Florida (4), Louisiana (4)
VANDERBILT - Georgia (11), Tennessee (8), Texas (6)

*Talent rich Texas produces the most talent of any state outside the SEC's borders.
Eight of the 12 SEC schools have players from Texas in their two-deep lineup.

*How deep is the talent from Georgia? EverySEC school has at least two players
among its top 22 from the state. The state of Florida provides at least one on every
depth chart.

*Of the nine states that make up the SEC, Kentucky produces the least football talent.
Arkansas is next to last.

*Georgia has the most home grown players with 28. Vanderbilt has the fewest home
state players with 8.

*Players from Alabama are represented on the depth charts of 11 of 12 schools. Only
LSU doesn't have a player from Alabama on its current two-deep.

IrishMAN, I personally like you because you are a good kid. It's easy to pick out
dumbheads and good kids. But..................................

GodAlmighty, we are watching Fla/LSU and yelling like crazy at Urban for not playing
Brantley. Then the yelling turned toward you after some of the guys saw your post.

20% of winnings on one game. BULLSHIT...LOSER....NEVER, EVER!!!

Florida could pass all day on LSU, Tebow is not up to par. The belt they put on him
in the first half hurt the team. I love Tebow and what he has done...but, he was better as a sophomore. Brantley could have picked LSU apart.

20% our ass....come on Bud, you are a smart kid.

Hahaha thanks Clover. To be fair, I was about 10 beers deep but it was 20% of my winnings that day (which is the equivalent of 2.5 units -- I typically just flat bet 1 unit per game). While it was more than my normal bet, I was up a lot on the day and feeling good so I threw some down. I know it's stupid to stray from the money management plan, but it was fun and it won so all is good.

KENTUCKY
Starting quarterback Mike Hartline may be out for the rest of the season after suffering a serious knee injury against South Carolina. The Cats will likely start Will Fiddler or Randall Cobb against Auburn this week. Cobb was a quarterback last season but has played receiver this year. Bad situation going into Auburn.

TEXAS
Huge game against Oklahoma this week. If the Horns get by the Sooners, is there another Big 12 team that can provide a serious challenge. Not good for Texas with such a big game on deck is losing their top two running backs to injury over the weekend.

TENNESSEE
Give Lane Kiffin credit. First, Jonathan Crompton looked like an SEC quarterback Saturday against Georgia. Second, by playing him, Kiffin is telling every quarterback prospect in the country that you can play immediately if you come to Knoxville. Who knows, next week Crompton may look like an NAIA quarterback. Can't figure that kid out.

ALABAMA
The Tide will play South Carolina Saturday at 6:45 and will be televised nationally by ESPN. The Gamecocks (5-1) are coming off a 28-26 win over Kentucky.

Bama kicker Leigh Tiffin is now ranked No. 3 in the nation with 2.33 field goals per game. The senior has now made 14 of 16 attempts in six games.

Sophomore running back Mark Ingram is 14th nationally in rushing at 111.3 yards per game. He seems to have his best games against good competition with 172 yards against Ole Miss and over 150 yards against Virginia Tech.

Bama was ranked No. 2 in the latest AP poll and also ranked No. 2 in total defense in the latest NCAA statistics. The D is giving up 220.5 yards per game.

BIG EAST
Huge game Thursday night in the Big East. Big showdown with Cincinnati traveling to South Florida. Both teams are undefeated with both being ranked in the top 25. Should be a dandy and chance for Tony Pike to shine.

QUOTES FROM THE WEEK

"I tried to play smart. I told him, when we were talking to Coach Urban Meyer, "I'm not going out there and play tentative or scared, That's not me."
Florida quarterback Tim Tebow, after his return from a concussion Saturday at LSU.

"Easily, we could have scored 35, 40 points, but we didn't. I feel very fortunate right now."
TCU coach Gary Patterson, whose team's scoring output matched the game time temperature in a 20-17 upset avoiding win at Air Force.

"I think the critics will keep criticizing. The good folks won't."
Bobby Bowden, after a week of controversy over his future and following a 49-44 loss to Georgia Tech.

"Coach basically made a promise to us that we wouldn't lose to them anymore..forever, or until he leaves. He's not going to let Georgia beat us."
Tennessee safety Eric Berry after a 45-19 win over the Bulldogs.

Welcome to EOG No. 5. Great place to be and you are welcome to post in the Notebook. Glad to have you Bud.

SOUTHEASTERN CONFERENCE
Tennessee quarterback Jonathan Crompton, Florida linebacker Brandon Spikes and Arkansas return specialist Dennis Johnson were named Southeastern Conference players of the week. Crompton completed 20 of 27 passes for a career high 310 yards and four touchdowns in the Volunteers' win over Georgia. Spikes had 11 tackles, a career best three sacks and a fumble recovery in Florida's win at LSU. Johnson had three kickoff returns for 145 yards in Arkansas' victory over Auburn, including a pivotal 70 yarder. Alabama center William Vlachos was offensive lineman of the week, while defensive line honors went to Kentucky's Corey Peters. South Carolina receiver Alshon Jeffery was freshman of the week.

Re: 2009 College Football Notebook

ALABAMA
A Monday commitment brought Alabama's tentative incoming freshman class to 21. DeAndrew White, a receiver from Galena Park, Texas, chose the Tide over Oklahoma, LSU and Notre Dame. The speedy athlete is the Class 5A 200 meter champion and was the third ranked long jumper in the nation at the USA Track and Field Championships this summer. As a junior last season, his last minute touchdown lifted his North Shore High School over Lufkin for the school's 73rd straight win and a new state record. The old mark belonged to Southlake-Carroll, the program that produced Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy.

SOUTH CAROLINA
Alshon Jeffery, a freshman who had pledged to Pete Carroll's USC before choosing to stay close to home in February, had three touchdown catches against Kentucky. Jeffery was named the SEC's freshman of the week and Spurrier was so tickled, he awarded a game ball to recruiting coordinator Shane Beamer (son of VT's Frank Beamer) for his great job of recruiting Jeffery.

GEORGIA
Head coach Mark Richt, who has at least 10 wins in six of the past seven seasons, is facing heat after the Tennessee blowout loss. Georgia is 3-3 for the first time in 13 years. Richt said "a lot of people expect blood" and want "somebody to be let go or fired or that kind of thing, and maybe that's what needs to be done." Now in his ninth year, Richt will probably be forced to make staff changes after this season to buy himself time. In the SEC, nine years without a national title is considered a crime I guess. Anyone think Florida State would not love to have Mark Richt back in Tallahassee?

TENNESSEE
Just because it's a bye week doesn't mean practice is going to be any less physical for the Volunteers. Head coach Lane Kiffin believes in physical practices and sees no reason to change just because of having a week off. Kiffin believes physical practices help the whole team get better and keeps competition at a high level. He will focus on getting second and third team players more opportunities in practice in hopes of developing more depth before the October 24 game against Alabama.

AUBURN
Cornerback Walt McFadden is awaiting medical examinations that likely will determine whether he will play Saturday against Kentucky. The senior injured his right knee during his second quarter interception in Saturday's loss to Arkansas. Chizik said yesterday it might be a game time decision

VANDERBILT
After watching film of Vanderbilt's 16-13 overtime loss at Army, coach Bobby Johnson said a poor officiating call cost the Commodores. Offensive pass interference was called on wide receiver Udom Umob for picking Alex Washington's defender on a 3 yard pass that would have served as the go ahead touchdown with 1:01 lift in regulation. After the penalty, Vanderbilt settled for a tying field goal. Johnson did not see enough to question the call at West Point, but on Monday he said the officials were wrong.

SEC DEFENSES
After a fast start by offenses, scoring in the SEC has dipped to 29.7 points per game. That's still within reach of the single season SEC record (30.3 in 2007), but no longer tops in the country. The Big 12 (34.2) and Big East (31.2) have moved ahead. Six SEC defenses rank in the top 25 in total yards allowed: Florida, Alabama, Tennessee, South Carolina, Vanderbilt and Ole Miss.

NATIONAL CHAMPIONS
Eight of the past nine Bowl Championship Series national champions were ranked in the top 10 in total defense. Florida and Alabama are 1 and 2, respectively, in total defense this week. They're currently joined in the top 10 by Arizona State, Texas, North Carolina, USC, TCU, Penn State, Oklahoma and South Florida. The only BCS national champion since 1999 not to be in the top 10 was Ohio State in 2002. Yes Lucy, DEFENSE wins championships.

Roll Tide Bamafats.....appreciate the comments.

SOUTHERN CAL AT NOTRE DAME
Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen is rated first in the nation in passing efficiency. However, Southern Cal is allowing only 8.6 points a game and leads the nation with 4.2 sacks a game. The Trojans limited Clausen to an 11 of 22 day last year for 41 yards. The Trojans have won seven straight in the series by an average of 27 points a game. For whatever reason, I believe the Irish will put up a fight in this one.

VIRGINIA TECH AT GEORGIA TECH
I really like the way Frank Beamer has coached this team since an opening week loss to Alabama. The Hokies have won all three of their ACC games this year by a combined 113-47. Tech will make it a game but I like VT in a close one.

ARKANSAS AT FLORIDA
Some think this is a good spot for the Razorbacks to challenge the Gators. Alabama's defense completely shut down Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett and last I heard, Florida also plays some D. Arkansas is 0-7 against Florida since joining the Southeastern Conference in 1992. After this game, they will be 0-8.

GEORGIA AT VANDERBILT
Horribly inconsistent Georgia ranks 11th in the SEC in both total offense and total defense. The Dawgs have the talent to dominate Vandy but......... The last three games in this series were decided by a combined 16 points, with Georgia winning in 2007 and 08 and Vandy in 2006. Dawg fans are getting restless with this team.

UAB AT OLE MISS
Motivation for the Rebels will be the question. After a tough loss to Alabama they get a not so good UAB team with Arkansas and Auburn on deck. The Blazers' Joe Webb is a true dual threat at quarterback, averaging 114 rushing yards and about 128 passing yards a game. However, Ole Miss will provide the best defense he has faced this year.

WAKE FOREST AT CLEMSON
Former Alabama player and assistant coach Dabo Swinney is struggling at Clemson, with wins over Middle Tennessee State and Boston College and losses to Georgia Tech, Texas Christian and Maryland. Reports that there is friction on the coaching staff is never a good sign for a struggling team. Wake Forest could take this one if the Tigers don't get their heads on straight.

MISSISSIPPI STATE AT MIDDLE TENNESSEE
A telling statistic shows the the Bulldogs are 10th in the nation in running the ball, while MTSU is 100th in defending the run. Turnovers have killed Mississippi State this season and if they continue this trend, they could get beat in this one.

KENTUCKY AT AUBURN
It's hard to win consistently in the Southeastern Conference without a good defense, and that's something the Tigers don't have. Fortunately for Auburn, Kentucky doesn't have a great offense. If Auburn can avoid turnovers, this should be another one of those fun days for the Tigers, who will watch their offense roll up about 500 yards and a decent number of points. Consider that the Wildcats are last in the SEC in run defense, while Auburn is seventh in the nation in running the ball. Kentucky will be without their starting quarterback for this game.

SOUTH CAROLINA AT ALABAMA
The Gamecocks come to Tuscaloosa with one of their best defenses in years. Linebacker Eric Norwood and defensive end Cliff Matthews are NFL type players. They have anchored a defense that has yet to allow an opposing back to rush for 100 yards. Alabama averages 43 running plays and 27 passes a game, and leads the conference in time of possession at 34:08 a game. Speaking of defense, the South Carolina quarterback will face a defense that is fast and mean. Button up son, they will be coming after you.

OKLAHOMA VS TEXAS
The Sooners come into this game with losses to BYU and Miami. With quarterback Sam Bradford back for this one, Oklahoma is primed for an upset of the highly ranked Longhorns. Texas will face their toughest opponent of the season. So far, their best win has come against Texas Tech, which has rolled up four wins against bad teams. Texas is third in the nation in rushing defense, while Oklahoma is fourth. The Longhorns also lead the country in scoring. Look forward to watching this one and wouldn't be surprised to the Oklahoma take the win.

STRANGE SEASON
This has been a very strange and difficult season so far with my personal wagering. I'm sitting here at 38-36 (-$320) for the year. Straight betting at $200 per game has saved me and gives me the opportunity to have a good season before its all over. I see where some of the unit sillyness is burying players. One day they will learn!!! (When you don't play the unit crap I guess its OK to keep throwing it up against the wall.)

WEST VIRGINIA
Quarterback Jarrett Brown did not practice Sunday and is day-to-day after taking a head shot to the helmet on the opening series vs Marshall on Saturday. Coach Bill Stewart said he won't know until later in the week whether Brown or backup Geno Smith will start Saturday vs Connecticut. The Mountaineers (5-1) are 4-0 at home but just 1-2 against the spread. The status of Brown is worth keeping an eye on for this game.

SOUTH CAROLINA
Coach Steve Spurrier says he doesn't think receiver Moe Brown will be cleared to play next Saturday after suffering a concussion against Alabama. Two defenders hit the senior captain after an 8-yard catch in the first half. Brown was carted off the field on a stretcher and taken to a hospital. He flew home from Tuscaloosa with the team.

TEXAS TECH
Head coach Mike Leach is a strange dude but he sure knows how to pick a quarterback to run his offense. Year after year they produce. Big win for Tech Saturday over Nebraska.

TEXAS-OKLAHOMA GAME
The Big 12 officials must be paid by the hour. The first half lasted close to two hours with all the replays and ticky-tack personal fouls penalties. I missed the coin flip, can someone tell me if the refs asked for a replay?

AUBURN
The Tigers got a commitment Sunday from a big offensive linemen. Ed Christian, 6-5, 288 pounds from Valdosta Georgia was on campus over the weekend and liked what he saw. Christian was also considering Florida, Tennessee, Alabama and Florida State. He was named to Atlanta Journal's Super 11 for top players in Georgia. He is rated the 17th best offensive guard in the nation by Scout. Rivals rates him a 4 star. Nice pick up for that Cow College.

ALABAMA
The Tide not only overtook Florida atop the AP poll, Bama also moved ahead of the Gators as the top ranked total defense in the nation. Alabama is allowing an average of 226.5 yards per game. Florida is giving up 228.3. Alabama ranks third in rushing defense (63.2), Texas is ranked first. The Tide ranks fourth in scoring defense (11.5 points per game). Florida leads the nation at (8.6). Alabama is ranked 12th in passing defense (163.2). North Carolina is first.

Mark Ingram, sophomore running back now ranks fourth in the nation in rushing with an average of 129 yards per game. With 246 yards, he set a Bryant-Denny Stadium record and finished with the third most yards rushing in school history Saturday night in a 20-6 win over South Carolina.

QUOTES
"If I was Coach Nick Saban, I think I's have done it (go to the Wildcat) about the second quarter. If we get a back that goes for 248 some night, we're going to be in good shape."
South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier after getting an up-close look at running back Mark Ingram.

"Drew Brees texted me last night and said, 'Hey, go out there and shock the world, have fun. I'll be watching.' "
Purdue quarterback Joey Elliott, whose 2-5 Boilermakers did just that with a 26-18 victory over seventh ranked Ohio State.

"When you live on the edge like that, you're not always going to come out on the winning side."
Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen, whose team played yet another game to the wire, only to lose to USC 34-27.

Why doesn't UAB just give up football. That crowd they have drawn for the Southern Miss game is disgusting. I doubt if they got 10,000 people there. We get more people for high school games out here. That school and their fans do not deserve a football team. I say disband it. It has to be a huge money burner. Totally and absolutely disgusting. The team is worthless, and obviously the fans could care less. DISBAND this team. What an embarrassment for the State of Alabama.
His personal record says banned. He is unaware that two years ago UAB was on TV hosting north Texas or somebody. About 150 people showed up on the UAB side who only had to walk across the street! Texas sent about 600 moms and dads mostly the 1000 miles or so to watch. To go from 800 maybe to 10,000 is an amazing achievement! UAB added a weight room and has made continuous upgrades for two years now. This despite the Birmingham Sewer commission losing their money and facing bankruptcy. First city in a while to need bankruptcy protection.

USC is a very risky play. They play against Cal the following week, and Carroll will pull his starters out as early as possible to give them a chance to heal their injuries. There still is a chance that Barkley will not play in this game. Are you willing to give that many points with Aaron Corp as your starter?
His comment here was accruate and I gave him a 12io4j2w90several times for it. It turned my game around.

I'm around, but that was an absolutely devastating loss. To come back from 20 points down in the 4th quarter, and have the ball in Clausen's hands on the 4 yard line with the game on the line and come up short was crushing. 6 games this year, and 5 have been decided in the last minute. Season's already taken a decade off my life. Here's to a nice easy roll over BC :cheers

From Cloverleaf

TOMMY TUBERVILLE
The former Auburn head coach use to always praise his opponents leading up to a game. Now that he's a football analyst, he's not shying away from his opinions on games. Tuberville said yesterday on a Birmingham sports radio show that Auburn will beat Arkansas by three touchdowns. He said Arkansas's defense was so bad it couldn't stop a cold. Bet the Auburn coaches love this pressure.
I still do not care for him. Tommy likes to hold court at Christopher's restaurant on hy 49 at the blue Creek bridge. I know one man who went there and ordered a fish dinner that had to have been frozen one too many times. It was bad and it smelled. Now I do not run a $29.95 entree restaurant, but I know enough about fish to at least smell them first before cooking them. You can tell a lot about a man by his restaurant manners. I used to live next to Jim Gantner of Milwaukee Brewers and they hated him at the North Shore Restaurant; a zero tipper. His presence was his tip.

I took a class at an Alabama CC. The teacher was bad. He read to us from the html book. By week four, I was sleeping in class.

Now, at Auburn, you can expect the finest education in the state, perhaps a longer reach too. That may be why we are getting the better men. Saban can run a world class football team, but his school is a good place to send your son to get drunk and laid for two years, in my opinion.

SOUTHEASTERN CONFERENCE
The SEC has named Alabama running back Mark Ingram, Kentucky linebacker Micah Johnson and Florida kicker Caleb Sturgis players of the week. Ingram rushed for 246 yards in a win over South Carolina, the highest total at Bryant Denny Stadium and second most in the FBS this season. Johnson had 14 tackles in Kentucky's win over Auburn. The Wildcats allowed only 315 yards and one offensive touchdown. Sturgis hit a game winning 27 yard field goal in Florida's 23-20 win over Arkansas and a 51 yarder in the third quarter. Ole Miss center Daverin Geralds was the offensive lineman of the week, while Georgia tackle Geno Atkins claimed defensive line honors. Mississippi State defensive back Corey Broomfield was freshman of the week.

AUBURN
The SEC announced Monday that the SEC Network will televise Auburn's October 31 home game against Ole Miss. CBS chose the neutral site game between Florida and Georgia for the 2:30 slot, and ESPN decided to televise South Carolina's game at Tennesse for its 6:30 game. The Ole Miss game will mark Auburn's first appearance on the SEC Network this season.

ALABAMA
Two players were recognized Monday for achievements during the past week and this season. Rolando McClain was named Lott Trophy player of the week for his seven tackle performance against South Carolina. Also, tight end Colin Peek became one of 22 players selected to the Mackey Award watch list. The award presented to the nation's top tight end comes at the conclusion of the season. Peek's 19 catches and 213 receiving yards are both team highs.

TENNESSEE
Vols coach Lane Kiffin revealed Monday morning that Alabama denied a request by Tennessee to wear its home orange jerseys on the road against the Tide. Under a new NCAA rule for 2009, both teams may wear their colored home jerseys if the home team and the home team's conference agree. Kiffin said the Southeastern Conference approved the Vols' request to wear their orange jerseys on the road. Kiffin claimed that no reason was given by Alabama.

TEXAS
Longhorn quarterback Cjolt McCoy may lose his thumbnail, but won't lose any playing time. Despite a bruised right thumb that kept him out of practice Monday, McCoy plans to play Saturday at Missouri. The Longhorns are giving 13.5 poiints and are just 1-4-1 against the spread.

CINCINNATI
Quarterback Tony Pike practiced Monday with a cast on his left forearm to protect a surgical plate that shifted when he was hit in a win over South Florida. Bearcats coach Brian Kelly said Pike will not play vs Louisville unless he can protect himself. Unbeaten Cincinnati is giving 17 points to Louisville and is 4-2 against the spread.

TULSA
Tulsa will be playing its second straight weekday game when it ventures to Texas-El Paso, where something's got to give. The Golden Hurricane have played to the under in their last eight games. But these schools have cleared the total in five of their last six meetings, including last year's 102 point explosion. Tulsa is giving seven points and not sure of total at this time. The score board should lite up in this one.

LSU
Tigers head athletic trainer is a guy named Jack Masucci who makes 30% of the bats used in the major leagues, including Albert Pujols and Ryan Howard's bats. Pretty good second job.

Head coach Lane Kiffin, who had been working under a memo of understanding, has signed a six year, $14.25 million contract. As agreed to when he was hired in November. Kiffin will earn $2 million in 2009, which includes pay for broadcasting responsibilities and endorsements. His salary will gradually increase each season, topping out $2.75 million for the 2014 season. Should Kiffin be fired without cause, he will receive a buyout between $5 million and $7.5 million. Kiffin will owe the university between $200,000 and $1 million should he take another job.

Quarterback Taylor Potts has been cleared to play Saturday vs Texas A&M. Potts who has thrown for 1817 yards and 13 touchdowns, had missed the last two games with a concussion. Potts replacement, Steven Sheffield, has a foot injury suffered in last week's win at Nebraska and unlikely to be available leaving freshman Seth Doege the backup. The Red Raiders (5-2) averaged 38 points with Potts and 49 points with Sheffield. Tech always seems to have quarterbacks who can produce in that system.

CINCINATI
Quarterback Tony Pike had surgery yesterday to repair the plate in his left arm, raising doubts whether he can play Saturday against Louisville. The unbeaten Bearcats, who run a spread offense, hope Pike can practice Thursday and is able to take snaps out of the shotgun. If Pike can't play, either Zach Collaros or Chazz Anderson will replace him. I don't know a thing about the backups.

AUBURN
Quarterback Chris Todd's right shoulder is fine. That's what both Auburn coach Gene Chizik and offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn said yesterday when ask about the Tigers' starting quarterback. Malzahn said any difference in Todd's throws is natural at this time of the season. He said Todd practiced Tuesday and looked good. Todd has completed just 48 % of his passes over the past two games, throwing for just 213 total yards in those games.

SOUTHERN CAL
If Pete Carroll groans about the inequities of the BCS this year, he may have a point. Despite three Top 25 wins and the toughest schedule of the top 10 contenders, USC can't get traction with the computers where the Trojans rank 11th. Every one of USC's final six remaining opponents has a .500 record or better, and the Pac-10 is the second ranked conference. With those numbers, the Trojans have a chance to climb very fast and challenge a once beaten Texas for the No.2 spot at the end of the regular season. But that's only if Texas falters.

ALABAMA NOTES
*Three of its victims have been ranked teams, and the closest margin of victory has been 10 points (Virginia Tech). Of its remaining five regular season opponents, only one is ranked: LSU No. 9.
*Quarterback Greg McElroy has tailed off a little after a hot start. When he has had time, he has proved he can throw accurately and deep.
*The running game is in good hands with feature back Mark Ingram. Backup freshman Trent Richardson could start for most teams.
*Receiver Julio Jones is off to a slow start considering the outstanding season he had as a freshman. Double team coverage and injuries have slow the sophomore. Marquis Maze, Darius Hanks and others have picked up the slack.
*With nose guard Terrence Cody anchoring the defensive line, Alabama ranks third in the nation in rushing defense (63 ypg).
*Middle linebacker Rolando McClain is the heart and soul of a defense that ranks No. 1 in the nation. This dude will be outstanding in the NFL.
*Sophomore safety Mark Barron is becoming a standout in the secondary.
*Place kicker Leigh Tiffin has made 16 of 19 field goal attempts.
*This team will go as far as the defense and running game takes it.
*ROLL TIDE!

Dear Cloverleaf;
I have Tenneessee in my CFB contest as the line was frozen at +15.5 (I can change it) but I see the real life betting line is down to -14 on Bama. I could only listen on the radio last game where Bama did not cover the -16 or so. Please lure me away from the dark side of the Force and tell me that Bama will cover the -14 please or I may do something I may regret, maybe not now, but soon and for the rest of my life and bet on Tenneessee +14.

Mr. S, I will pass on this game like I have on most Bama games this season. I
think the Tide covers but Tennessee does have a good defense. Problem I see for
the Vols is how are they going to score.

Side note: Home team has covered only 2 of the past 17 in the series.

I do not believe in "history lessons" of 2-17 ATS when it comes CFB unless it is something real like the statue Troy has that gives them mystical power over Ark State. If Ark- State believes it, then its real to them.

I think I will also pass and bet on something with more EV like CENTRAL FLA -10 at Rice. Rice is every team's drum and any team that does not beat the crap out of them is giving their men a chance to rest.

Bamafats, I don't know. I don't understand many things that Kiffin comes up with. Maybe he thinks it will give the team motivation. If they need to ware orange to get motivated to play Bama, then they are in Big Trouble my friend.

FLORIDA STATE and NORTH CAROLINA
What has happened to Florida State? The Noles have lost three straight games and sitting at 2-4, their worst start since Bowden took over the program in 1976. Florida State has hit hard times in recent years but nothing like this and the top program in Florida a few years back is lucky to be the fourth best right now. We may have seen the end of the legendary coach as he simply is not getting the players he once did and what he does get, he is having trouble coaching them. A report surfaced late Monday night said offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher's contract was "done". Fisher, the head coach in waiting denied the report.

The game tonight should be strength against strength. This will be a good matchup of the Florida State offense against the North Carolina defense. The Noles are 27th in the nation and first in the ACC in total offense with 426 yards per game. They are also 2nd in the ACC in passing offense and that goes into the teeth of the Tar Heels defense. North Carolina is 3rd in the country in total defense, 1st in the ACC, but they are also 3rd in passing efficiency defense and that will play huge against the Seminoles. The Tar Heels are not only 1st in the ACC in total defense, but also 1st in scoring defense and 2nd in rushing defense which is probably surprising to the average fan. However, North Carolina brought back nine starters from an above average unit last season so defense is the game for North Carolina. As good as NC defense may be, the offense sucks ranking 117th in the nation in total offense. The issues are twofold as they can't run the ball or pass the ball as they are 102nd and 103rd respectively in those catagories. They are converting only 30 percent on 3rd down which is 112th in the land. The offense is pretty bad.

Florida State owns a commanding 14-1-1 advantage over North Carolina, but these teams have not played each other in five years. For FSU, defensive tackle Budd Thacker will not be available after being diagnosed with a Grade 3 sprained MCL. Also, senior LB Dekoda Watson may not play with a groin injury. These two guys are key players on an already struggling defense. No injuries to any NC key players.

I will pass on a side play but giving some thought to OVER with the total.

PENN STATE at MICHIGAN
The Lions, which haven't won at Michigan since 1996, leads the Big Ten in run defense, total defense and scoring defense and has allowed only five touchdowns this season. Michigan leads the league in scoring offense but has padded its numbers with wins over Delaware State 63-6, Eastern Michigan 45-17 and Western Michigan 31-7. I like Penn State in a close one.

TEXAS at MISSOURI
Longhorn coach Mack Brown is 5-0 against Missouri, the Tigers haven't beaten Texas since 1997. The Horns ranks first in the nation in rushing defense and scoring offense. Texas cannot afford a loss this time in the season.

IOWA at MICHIGAN STATE
Unbeaten Iowa leads the Big Ten, but Michigan State, Penn State and Ohio State each have only one league loss. Michigan State's wins have come over Michigan, Illinois, Northwestern and Montana State. Iowa has not left the Michigan State campus with a victory since 1995, the second longest drought among Big Ten Conference road rivals. Some of the Riders smell an upset in this one.

LOUISVILLE at CINCINNATI
Cincinnati quarterback Tony Pike underwent surgery on his non-throwing arm Tuesday morning but still might play. The Bearcats are trying to stay unbeaten and I see no reason they shouldn't against Louisville.

ARKANSAS at OLE MISS
Mississippi coach Houston Nutt beat the Razorbacks, his former team, last year in Fayetteville. He needs for his quarterback to start playing up to the hype he received during preseason. This game will match Arkansas's offense against Mississippi's defense. Ole Miss should win but the Razorbacks will put up a fight.

FLORIDA at MISSISSIPPI
Former Gator offensive coordinator going against his old team. For as much as Florida has accomplished in the past couple of decades or so, they've struggled in Starkville. They've lost their last four games there, with the last win coming in 1985. State and the points seems like a reasonable play to me.

VANDERBILT at SOUTH CAROLINA
Vandy's only wins have come against Western Carolina and Rice, but the Commodores have won their last two meeting with South Carolina. Gamecocks coach Steve Spurrier was 14-0 against Vandy until then. No Vandy win this week.

LOUISIANA-MONROE at KENTUCKY
In two previous tries this year to beat a team from a major conference, ULM lost at Texas 59-20 and at Arizona State 38-14. The Wildcats are coming off its first win over Auburn since 1966.

AUBURN at LSU
From 2000-07, the winner of this game went to the SEC Championship Game six times. It could happen again. If LSU takes this one, the Tigers will stay in the race, with its title game chances coming down to a November 7 visit to Alabama. Auburn's high powered offense has lost some gas lately, scoring only 37 points in the past two games, both losses. LSU has a solid defense, which is overseen by former Tennessee defensive coordinator John Chavis. First year Auburn coach Gene Chizik has done an excellent job so far in his first season, but the lack of talent at most every position has started taking its toll on the Tigers. LSU is coming off a home loss to Florida. They haven't lost consecutive home games since 2001.

TENNESSEE at ALABAMA
No. 1 ranked Alabama (AP) 7-0 host the Vols 3-3 on Saturday to continue what's been a great series in the past. But the past is the past, and the two teams don't match up like they once did. The Tide has vaulted well ahead of the Vols. That may change in the future as first year UT coach Lane Kiffin appears committed to rebuilding his program's talent base, just as Saban did at Alabama. For now, however, this is a Bama team well worth its ranking. Gene Stallings, the last coach to win a football national title at Alabama, believed in running the ball, stopping the run and making fewer turnovers than the opponent. The Crimson Tide performs exceptionally well in all three of those areas. Alabama ranks ninth nationally in rushing offense and third in rushing defense. In turnover margin, the Tide is 12th, with one fewer turnover a game than its opposition. The Vols are a decent running team, have a better than average defense and are making about as many turnovers as their opponents. They have a chance to challenge the Tide, but it's hard to imagine Alabama letting down enough to lose this game, especially the way the defense is playing. I'll make a guess of 28-10.

Best of luck to all.

Great game by Tennessee. Should have won the game.

Tennessee played to win and Alabama played not to lose.

Best thing that could have happened to Bama. They now have an open
date and get ready for the final push knowing they are lucky to be
undefeated.

Give Tennessee credit, they took it to a team that is far better.

TENNESSEE
Vols coach Lane Kiffin may be dumb as a rock when it comes to NCAA rules and trash talking the Florida Gators, but through seven games, he's proving himself as a decent college football coach. Former Vols coach Phillip Fulmer didn't leave Kiffin much in the way of talent, but Kiffin has gotten surprisingly good results out of what he inherited. Indluding Saturday's 12-10 loss at Alabama, Tennessee has played No. 1 Florida and the No. 2 Crimson Tide on the road and fallen by only a combined 12 points. The Vols also have a four point home loss to Auburn, but considering how the Tigers have fallen off the college football map, you can't blame the Vols for thinking the result would've been much different if they had played them later in the year. Tennessee is only 3-4, but Kiffin's first team in Knoxville is looking a little like Gene Stallings' first team at Alabama in 1990, which went 7-5. When Stallings took over from Bill Curry, he and his staff turned the Crimson Tide into a tough squad, both on defense and in the offensive philosophy. The team that Kiffin brought to Tuscaloosa on Saturday was the first Alabama has played this year that seemed ready and willing to swap punch for punch with the Crimson Tide, which essentially had out toughed the first seven teams on its schedule. It's interesting to think of how the Vols might thrive if Kiffin can find a better quarterback, more quality defensive players to give to his father; defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin, and a few talented offensive lineman.

QUOTES
"We tried to avoid the matchup as much as we could offensively. We couldn't avoid it on field goals."
Tennessee's Lane Kiffin on the battle between center Cody Sullins and Alabama nose tackle Terrence Cody.

"The problem is they've got a coach that wants to score so bad that he's pressing them and some of those guys aren't ready for that."
Florida's Urban Meyer criticizing himself for trying to squeeze too much out of the Gators offense, especially in the red zone.

"They must have known to do it on first down because that way I wouldn't veto it."
TCU coah Gary Patterson who was left in the dark before a trick play that helped expand the lead en route to a 38-7 thumping of BYU.

"The talk that we've had down there, there's only one thing that solves it: winning. Play close and fight your guts out. Who cares? You've got to win."
FSU coach Bobby Bowden, who at least temporarily slowed down the critics with a 30-27 come from behind victory at North Carolina.

SPORTING NEWS
The Sporting News says no national title contender is playing better than Cincinnati. Even without quarterback Tony Pike, Cincinnati provided more evidence Saturday with a convincing 41-10 victory over Louisville. Last I checked, Louisville is one hell of a power house. Horse hockey Sporting News.

DUKE
Way to go David Cutcliffe. This old Birmingham native just led Duke to its second straight ACC win, the first time the Blue Devils have won back-to-back conference games since 1994.

NORTH ALABAMA
The most consistent team in the state of Alabama may not play in Tuscaloosa. University of North Alabama (Florence) in undefeated and ranked No. 1. Terry Bowden has come in and created a monster for other Gulf South Conference foes.

OKLAHOMA
As announced, Sam Bradford will leave Oklahoma for the NFL next year. He broke the school records with 4720 yards passing and 50 touchdowns en route to the Heisman Trophy and the BCS championship game a year ago, and it was a 24-14 loss to Florida in the title game that brought him back for another season for another shot. He leaves Oklahoma, which has never produced a starting NFL quarterback, as perhaps the school's most notable passer. Among his school records are the career marks for passing yardage and touchdowns. Dr. James Andrews (Birmingham, AL) will perform season ending surgery on Bradford's right, throwing shoulder today in Birmingham. Bradford's recovery is expected to take four to six months, with the NFL draft slightly less than six months away.

MICHIGAN
The NCAA has entered an investigation into practices of the Wolverines. University president Mary Sue Coleman announced Monday the NCAA has given the school a notice of inquiry. The NCAA's enforcement staff often looks into allegations, but only sends school presidents a letter of inquiry when an initial review determines a violation may have occurred based on credible information. According to the letter sent to Coleman, the NCAA enforcement staff intends to complete the investigation by December 31. Allegations were brought by anonymous players claiming the amount of time they spent during the season and in the off season exceeded NCAA limits.

TENNESSEE
Head coach Lane Kiffin was reprimanded Monday by the Southeastern Conference for criticizing game officials. This marks the second time this year he has been reprimanded by the league. SEC commissioner Mike Slive said Kiffin could be suspended if he violates conference rules again. Kiffin will learn that butting heads with the league commissioner is a losing battle.

FLORIDA
In Southeastern Conference play, Florida has just seven touchdowns in 25 trips inside the 20 yard line, a 28 percent rate that is alarming. The Gators scored TDs on 27 of 37 trips (73%) last year and 30 of 44 trips (68%) in 2007. There have been fumbles, interceptions, missed field goals, penalties and sacks. Star quarterback Tim Tebow doesn't have any answers and is clearly getting disheartened with his team's offensive woes. He blew off his postgame interview session for the first time in three years after the Mississippi State game.

ALABAMA
In the past 50 years, Alabama has a 49-15 record in games following bye weeks. In 13 of those seasons, it had two byes. In 2006, it did not have a bye, and it paid a price by losing its last four games. From 1959 through 1989, byes before the Auburn game were common. Alabama's record against Auburn after a bye week during that stretch was 16-7. Last year was the first year after 1989 that Alabama had a bye before facing Auburn. The Tide defeated its rival 36-0. Subtract the bye weeks before Auburn games and Alabama's record in games following an open date has been 32-8 in the past 50 years.

This is one of the things that make a streak real. A rest period of R&R is a time honored custom that give the men time to heal their little or not so little aches and cuts. Those things a player might not think about to tell his coach like "I have this tiny cut on my finger that I thought was healed but it must have gotten infected so it hurts when I catch the ball..." and it needs ten days of antibiotics to heal right.

2. Alabama at Auburn, Nov. 27: The Iron Bowl in any year under any circumstances remains one of the hottest rivalries going. Think the Auburn coaching staff might show up at Jordan-Hare Stadium in a stretch limo?

Depending on how bad the next few games are for AU, they may show up in a white Chevy sedan with tinted windows the day before and sleep in the coach's office after an all night think-a-thon on how to win.

Bama pounds Auburn into the dirt in the Ironbowl this year and I live in Auburn. I cannot ever tell anyone who I am or I will get my tree TeePeed.

Bet ML on Alabama or wait for an ATS pick. Best guess now is .... Bama -9.5 Anything under Bama -5.5 will be treated by the IRS as "gift money"
