Re: I gamble for a living.......

Blackjack is really a great game for playing with fun for earning money. I love to play this game online with some casino websites and make a good money through it.

Although I normally don't do it, I can see the logic of the move. If you should double down when the dealer shows a 6 because you have an edge, why not do it on two hands?

I always double my 12 vs dealers 6----one of few 21 moves that have been good to me.

Re: I gamble for a living.......

Worst (realistic) thing you can do in blackjack is to not split 8's against a dealer 7. Let's assume you're not going to do anything outrageously stupid like ask for a hit on 21 or 20.

I actually saw a guy try to double down on a blackjack a while back against a dealer 3, I think. I wasn't at the table, just walking by and only noticed because there was a bit of commotion with people wondering if he was allowed to do it. No idea if he was making a bunch of crazy plays previously, and I can't recall if they let him double down or if I left before someone made a decision. When I did the calculations it was surprisingly not as bad of a play as I thought since blackjack only paid 6:5.

Re: I gamble for a living.......

I agree that it's best to get up and leave, but good luck finding a table where everyone "knows how to play".

I'd be very confident the vast majority of the people who complain about playing at a table where "no one knows how to play" don't know perfect basic strategy themselves, let alone simple counting variations that might make an alternate play correct. My experience with blackjack is pretty limited as I've only played it for promos or free drinks and now typically just play VP if I need a drink, but I can definitely recall getting shit from other players or even the dealer for making very simple and correct plays like hitting a 12 vs a 3, getting a ten and "taking the dealer's bust card." Same with doubling on various soft totals vs a dealer stiff card, as if they wanted me to stand with an A5 or whatever.

I had a pitboss at Foxwoods openly ridiculing me to the dealer and other players for surrendering 16 vs 10

she really got some zingers in on how stupid I am

Re: I gamble for a living.......

I'm not sure I've ever seen anyone than me ever surrender, period, but yeah, surrender is another example where I've gotten funny looks. Actually, I've also been given shit for hitting 16 against dealer 7-8, or 9-T in games without surrender. Not a word out of the peanut gallery when the dealer has 17 or better, but when the dealer has a stiff underneath you "took the dealer's bust card."

I am likely the most experienced BJ player here and I always get shit while using correct strategy. Groovin is correct, most that bitch don't know basic strategy themselves. My most common response is that when they put their money in my circle then they can make suggestions on my play.

Re: I gamble for a living.......

I just ignore people now, but when I was younger I used to love riling up these types. Since $5 blackjack tables were very easy to find, I could deliberately make a blatant mistake that might cost 80 cents of EV, and the entertainment factor in pissing off these types was certainly worth more than that. I used to make cracks about "it's 50/50 either you win or you don't" or "isn't gambling still allowed in casinos," particularly when it's the dealer making the complaints, the same crap I say now when people talk strategy during poker games.

Re: I gamble for a living.......

The only way other players affect my play is by smoking and drunkeness. I hates playing with other players.

It does you no good to scold and blame them, and CERTAINLY does you no good to help them. I gave this examble at RTP shortly before I was banned there for the 43rd time.

You're at the BJ table and Darryl shows up with his other brother Darryl and his girlfriend Maria. Darryl plops down those cigarettes and lighter out of his left hand and gets ready to play. We play for a few hands and it's a fun time for all. But then Darryl gets down a little, and doubt is slowly creeping into his mind. He begins asking Maria for advice and then his other brother Darryl, both valuable resources. The losing escalates, so he suddenly thinks I'm the Oracle of Las Vegas. I could be losing just as badly, but the quickness of my decisions seems to impress him. So he starts pounding me.

Here we go. Darryl draws 16 v.10, no surrender. "What should I do?" So, early on, I would turn professorial and tell him that if you hit, you would win 23.4 hands out of 100 and if you stand you will win 22.8 out of 100, according to the math, and that I would hit.

Of course he would then lose what amounts to a coin flip and then forever hate me. LOL. There is no upside.

I was young and idealistic then. Now, if I play BJ at all, I play by myself. It's not because I think the goofball next to me makes the wrong play and I'm going to suffer because of it, but because other players are just insufferable and slow down the game.

Re: I gamble for a living.......

if someone asks if they should hit their 16 its best to shrug and say gee thats a close one, then clam up. they will seek help elsewhere from then on

even if you want to help. I tried to tell a pretty girl one night a few hands the right move and she lost. she didnt get bitchy, but she walked away unhappy looking upset about her losses. their really is no upside.

Splitting 9's is a great way to make enemies at the table. some people yell at you, some people just start shaking their heads at you and give disapproving looks ( pending whether the dealer breaks or not) if the dealer busts they shake their head again and realize they will need to move on before the moron at the table ( me) totally screws them. if the dealer doesnt bust, it can get ugly.

my personal favorite are the asians who openly mutter at you and/or bark out a few words in whatever language it is they speak. I dont know any Chinese swear words but I don't doubt Ive been called them all

Re: I gamble for a living.......

Truth be told, when somebody tells you they gamble for a living, nine out of ten of them have a wife with a real job.

A real player keeps moving, ignores and tunes out the other players ignorance, and puts their table time in and wins.

You've kind of summed it up for us. LOL.

Anytime I hear "A real player" I realize that "real" is only in the eye of the writer's own gambler ego.

What does "keep moving" mean? Is the math going to change if I run around the block and come back to the table?

And what is the difference between "ignores and tunes out?"

I have to rest now.
