Given that the juice is 15% to 25% -- this is an impossible challenge.

I have worked at several Las Vegas race and sports books and I have yet to meet anyone who can beat the ponies long-term.

There are definately some VERY sharp "In the know" horse bettors. They just spread the money around and stay as low key as possible. Pretty smart.

Perhaps those who bet at the track or offshore (I can't really comment about those folks because I don't see their action). But in the race books of Nevada, sharp horse players who make + plus + money long-term, well -- I haven't met them. I've seen lots of big $$$ horse bettors -- but eventually, I also see those same guys go broke.

Occasionally, I will ask other race book people I know -- around Las Vegas -- whether they know any long-term pony-betting winners and they all agree with me. We see them come and go -- and when they go -- their wallet is quite a bit thinner.

Maybe for guys who play at the track.
I would have to see it myself to believe it.
Perhaps they have inside contacts, who knows.

But I really don't see it in Vegas. I spend a fair bit of time at the race book in Vegas that takes the most $$$ action of any race book in the state. I am still around there, betting sports, after many years. But the race players have turned over several times, with several guys disappearing because they owed everybody way too much money -- and the rest disappearing because they went broke.

Breeders Cup is a great weekend for recreation. That's who I think really gets the most out of the ponies == the tourists who come in for a few days, have fun, and don't take it too seriously.

I just couldn't do it myself personally, because I am dead serious about every sports bet I place, even when it's for only a buck. I can't bet into any wagering opportunity where the system sucks out 15% to 25% in vig.

You can win. You just need to know what is up. I made a killing last summer and fall when those guys were milkshaking their horses out here.

I posted about 6 weeks at another site, and I had 30 something winners and 4 or 5 losers. Most in the $10-12 range Some chalks and a couple 20+ winners. The problem is people don't bet W-P they like to try the homerun and couple the m in exactas, pick3 pick 4 and tris or supers. Rather than taking the sure money with a decent ticket they piss it away in exotics.

If you know what is going on you can make a lot of money if you don't get crazy. GREED is the big factor with horse guys no doubt about it. THAT is why I got the Win tickets I got, I wasn't the only one withthe "info" but I was basically the only one "smart" enough to bet the win place pools instead of the exotics.

Wantit- Not trying to be a smart ass but do you ever lose at anything? I mean jezzus fvcking christ!! How do you have time to post on all these forums and do all you say you do? Keep up the good work! I wish I had your life buddy!

Oh I lose here and there, but I always like to have an advantage. If you don't "gamble" you aren't supposed to "lose". At least that is my goal.

I haven't bet a horse race since they got caught doing it. I MIGHT be able to pick a few winners here and there, but I don't because I wouldn't have an adavantage.

Not sure if that makes sense or not. But I don't "lose" because I do not gamble. Or at least not if I can help it.

Basically I am not the degenerate looking at Hawaii versus whomever (because its the last game on the board usually) and trying to make that one least bet to either press a decent day or try to get out from under a horrible burial. I have a little more discipline than that.

Wanty long term you cannot win betting horses.

Wanty please do not tell me you win with exotics too

Horses are the biggest sucker game in the world

Even with rebates you cannot win

I love how guys say they poured 300K into the pools and broke even because of rebates

LMAO!!!

You must not of read my post. I said I DID NOT bet the exotics, and that is why I made some money. I bet WP and if they were 8-1 or better show if the field was balanced.

If I had 2 in a day and they straddled a pick 3 I would use them and an all in the other race. Made out OK there but that is when it sucked because alot of guy had the same idea, so the pay offs were smallish most of the time.

The only way to win at horses is to know whatis going on. Period. They all cheat from the smallest to the biggest. Except for huge race days when they ship in a lot of horses. But in the regular meets they all have a hand in the cookie jar.

20-30% holds against you. Probably better off going to the keno parlor.

You know Bill, one big indicator that I have noticed over the years, behind the counter is this:

The big sports bettors that win, they are generally friendly but not too friendly. Like yourself. They don't brag. They come in, make their bets. They take it to the bank. They don't assume anything about me because they know they've seen me around for decades and they know they see me sending it across the counter at other sports books.

But the horse bettors, be it with big or small money, they say stupid stuff like "you know kid, one day, you'll get a clue, and be as smart as me" or "this ain't like the track, there they know what is going on, did you just start yesterday or what?"

You get the idea.

At least in my experience, with the thousands of degenerate horse players that have passed through my life, pony bettors have no idea what I know or don't know. Also, they never figure out that I've been in this business a long time, because they don't pick up clues from their environment. That's because they are just gamblers. They are not advantage players. They don't ever view anything in terms of "is this a good gamble or do I have an overlay here?"

They are betting horses to "have action" and they are only kidding themselves that they are in this game to make money.

Perhaps there are guys with inside information, perhaps the guys at the track with contacts make money, but the degenerates that hang out in off-track betting outlets are not winning long term.

I think the key to winning at the ponies is getting 3 to 4 hits a year, whether its getting a piece of a pick 6 or banging out a 2 dime pick 4 40x.

Sure the hold is high, but truely if i hit 20 % on my Win tickets I make money in the long run. The years I lose is when i am missing those 3 to 4 large pops and vice versa.

BTW I expect a large pop next Saturday ;). I'll have my full card to view and hope others do too.

If one does have a slight chance to win you can make only a few win bets per week at odds of 3-1 and higher.

Tony when I refer to "we" it is our syndicate

I grew up with horse players. The guys went several times a week to the tracks as trainers and owners and as players. All of them Lost. With all that money they gave the tracks we could have bought an island.

Nevermind he has been withdrawn from the Sprint.

Back to the drawing board on that race, as I am looking to beat Lost in the Fog.

Racing is on the decline

When you hear rumours of Belmont Park closing down due to poor attendance you know racing is done.

Horse racing can't compete anymore.

You have slots and poker in a lot of states now, with people losing their money in other gambling endeavors it is hard for them to have any money left to play the ponies.

The last place you are going to see a sharp horse player is in a sportsbook/racebook. That would be like looking for George W. at a mensa meeting. For starters, half the people in there are just squares who could not find bingo. They can cheer their $2. show until their lungs give out. Then you have the great pretenders. The talk, talk, talk, but can't seem to find the cashier. Last you have the complete degenerate horse players. Every book has them. They even bring their own brown bag, so they don't lose their seat.

Why would a sharp winning horse player play at a sportsbook? He would not. And if you don't know why, you are not. Better luck finding a virgin at the local whorehouse. As far as taking the form, capping it and showing a profit at the end of year? Too much hold, especially on the exotics. The days when the Vegas sportsbooks/racebooks drew the best players are long gone. Might as well just tear out the seating and boards and replace them with wall to wall slots. Poker and slots. Slots and poker. All the horse/sports sharps have greener pastures.

Best Wishes...OF :+waving-5

Would be stupid for me to even consider going all the way to Vegas to bet horses when I can simulcast bet from home, offshore bet from home or even drive 30 minutes to go to the track. Even sports betting in Vegas is a joke. I'll never forget being at the Golden Nugget sportsbook this past summer and seeing the A's posted at -325 over the Royals and then going line shopping on my laptop upstairs and finding nothing over -275 offshore. Only sports betting of intrest in Vegas was the Union Plaza offerings of lines on every NFL game throughout the season.

Going to the track is the biggest joke ever. Took the kids to Emerald downs this summer. Boring 30 minutes between races, dirty and unkept, and the biggest ripoff of all is the track actually charging admission to go inside to gamble!

Imagine Wynn charging admission to losers dying to go inside to blow their money, give me a break. Horse racing is absolutely dead in America.
