Indiana at Cent Michigan

Sorry EOG meant to put this in NCAAFB section.

Looked over this one every which way to try and give CMU a chance but tonite just wont be their night.

Their number one offensive weapon has been dismissed (Seymour). He had 1284 yds carried on 262 attempts.

In his place Spencer Lewis who is a former walk-on comes in. Last yr he saw limited action with 175 yds on 43 carries.

If for some strange reason Seymour was to receive permission to play tonite I doubt he could be a potential threat as he has missed the entire training camp with charges against him for lying to a grand jury.

CMU is returning 7 starters on offense with a second yr coach but Indy counters with 9 players returning on defense and first yr head coach Terry Hoeppner.

Line started at 11 and has now dropped to -7 Indiana

Unfortunately for all the CMU bettors I belive Vegas had it right at -11.

This one will get out of hand early.

Play Indiana -7

Predicted score Indiana 35 CMU 3

Good Luck

NCAAF 2005 (1-0)

Terry has installed a spread offensive scheme like the one he had while on the coaching staff at Miami (Ohio). Which should rattle a few defensive schemes CMU has to offer.

CMU has some impressive stats of their own though.

They are 4-1 SU when playing on friday nights. Unfortunately all wins were against Div II teams.

There is a general feeling around the Big Ten that the Hoosiers have taken a significant step forward by hiring Terry Hoeppner to reignite their program. Gerry DiNardo's team failed to generate any momentum in 2003 and when the Hoosiers lost their season finale to Purdue by a 63-24 margin, the evidence was clear that Indiana had to turn to another leader.

Hoeppner is an offensive guru who tutored Ben Roethlisberger at Miami (Ohio) and has long aspired to the Indiana head coaching position. Hoeppner was 48-24 in six years with the RedHawks and is an offensive innovator. The Hoosiers should have significantly more pop than last year when they averaged just over 320 yards of total offense per game.

Hoeppner has installed a spread offense and QB Blake Powers will get the opportunity to run it. At 6-5 and 210 pounds, Powers is big and strong enough to withstand the first wave of pressure and then make plays downfield. While he has a bit of a sore arm, he'll get his first opportunity in the opener at Central Michigan.

The coach says the spread formation should give the offense significant opportunities to put points on the board. "It forces the defense to defend both the width and the depth of the field," Hoeppner told the Indianapolis Star. "The true spread offenses operate from the shotgun all the time and rely on no-huddle as part of it, but they truly don't get the play-action pass where they fake the run, draw you in and throw the ball deep."

Central Michigan does not appear to have much of a chance of stopping a decent passing attack. While All-MAC DE Dan Bazuin is back at defensive end, the secondary should be vulnerable. They ranked 107th last year in pass defense and the Indiana receivers are anxious to expose this weakness.

"We have a lot of talent right now," said QB coach and passing game coordinator Matt Canada. "Our wideouts are inexperienced as far as game-day playing, but you look at those guys and we have a lot of talent there. Our running backs are as good as anybody, and I think our quarterbacks are going to do a good enough job of getting us in the right plays.

"We just want to play smart, play fast and we want them to do what they're asked to do on a play. You don't have to be Superman. You have to do your job and play smart. Don't put our defense in a bad position, and just make plays. I think they'll be up to the challenge."

Hoeppner's team has a great chance of getting off to a solid start against non-conference foes like Central Michigan, Nicholls State and Kentucky. If his players gain confidence using the spread offense, the Hoosiers may be able to write a feel-good story in the Big Ten this season.

Thought I would add this one. Thought it was funny that CMU has no home field advantage with no fan support.

This is a CMU fans question to their head coach.

Last season, home game attendance seemed to be a big issue for CMU in order to maintain NCAA Division I-A status for football. Do you foresee that issue arising again this season?

Derick
Mount Pleasant, MI Coach Kelly:
Attendance has really been taken off the table and is no longer an issue with the NCAA. However, it is an issue with us in the sense that we have a great venue that we want to fill with 25,000 or 30,000 people every game. How do we do that? It starts with winning football games. We need to put an exciting football team on the field and create a gameday atmosphere that draws fans to Kelly/Shorts Stadium.

Here are game notes from the CMU web-site for anyone interested.

The Coaches
Brian Kelly is beginning his second season as the head coach at Central Michigan University. He guided the Chippewas to a 4-7 record in 2004. Kelly arrived in Mount Pleasant after a successful 13-year stint at Grand Valley State University which saw him lead the Lakers to back-to-back NCAA Division II national championships in 2002 and 2003.

Terry Hoeppner makes his debut as the head coach at Indiana tonight. Hoeppner compiled a 48-25 record in five seasons at Miami, including back-to-back appearances in the MAC Championship Game and postseason bowls in 2003 and 2004. His RedHawks won the MAC title game and GMAC Bowl in 2003. <!-- STORY AD BEGINS HERE -->

<!-- STORY AD ENDS HERE -->The Series Indiana has won both prior contests with the Chippewas, claiming victories in Bloomington in 2002 and 2004. In last year's opener, the Hoosiers returned an interception 96 yards for a touchdown to break the game open midway through the third quarter. In 2002, CMU led 29-16 midway through the third period before IU rattled off 23 unanswered points en route to a 39-29 win.

Opening Act
CMU has won eight straight home openers, including last year's 44-27 win over Southeast Missouri State. The Chippewas have won their last five season-openers at home. CMU last opened a season at Kelly/Shorts in 2002, downing Sam Houston State 34-10.

Friday Night Lights
Friday night's contest marks the sixth time that CMU has played at night at Kelly/Shorts Stadium. The Chippewas are 4-1 in the previous five, each of which have been home openers.

Prior to kickoff of Friday's opener, CMU will recognize the 1991 and 1992 teams that recorded back-to-back wins over Michigan State in Spartan Stadium. In 1991, the Chippewas defeated No. 18 Michigan State, 20-3, in what is widely regarded as the greatest win in program history. CMU returned to East Lansing in 1992 and came away with a 24-20 win. Both teams were coached by current CMU Athletics Director Herb Deromedi.

Fill It Up
The Kelly/Shorts Stadium attendance record could potentially fall tonight against Indiana. The current attendance mark is 29,822 against rival Western Michigan in 1998. The largest crowd to ever watch a CMU basketball game was when 16,862 packed Assembly Hall in Bloomington to watch the No. 13-ranked Hoosiers post a 99-52 win over the Chippewas on Dec. 29, 1995. Despite the lopsided score, IU's Bobby Knight still managed to get a technical foul in the game.

CMU vs. the Big Ten
The Chippewas are 2-13 all-time against the 11 current members of the Big Ten Conference. Both wins came at Michigan State, a 20-3 win over the No. 18 Spartans in 1991 and a 24-20 victory in East Lansing in 1992. CMU all-time against the Big Ten:

Indiana 0-2 Iowa 0-2 Michigan 0-2Michigan State 2-4 Minnesota 0-1 Purdue 0-2</PRE>Future Big Ten Dates
The Chippewas' scheduled game at Michigan next season has been moved back a week to Sept. 9, 2006. Ball State will now play the Wolverines on Sept. 2. Other Big Ten opponents on future CMU schedules include Oct. 14, 2006 at Illinois; Sept. 15, 2007 at Purdue; Nov. 3, 2007 at Indiana; Sept. 13, 2008 at Purdue; Sept. 5, 2009 at Michigan State; and Sept. 11, 2010 versus Indiana in Kelly/Shorts Stadium.

Two Rookies and a Legend
In the first two weeks of the season CMU faces head coaches in their first season at their respective schools -- Terry Hoeppner at Indiana and Shane Montgomery at Miami. The Chippewas counter that in week three by playing legendary Penn State coach Joe Paterno who currently holds the NCAA Division I coaching longevity record for most years at one school - 40. On This Date
CMU has played three games all-time on Sept. 2, posting a 1-2 record. The Chippewas defeated Eastern Illinois, 33-17, in 1999, but fell to Akron (23-13 in 1999) and Purdue (48-0 in 2000). All three contests were season openers.

Final 20-13

Well guys we got a push out of this one.

Kind of sucks considering Indy had it 1st and goal and took a knee three times to run out the clock though.

But thats why they call it gambling.

When you cap Indiana, think of High School. I guess CM as well. LOL

Bad part is in our area there are more fans at High School games than there were in Mich tonite.

They probably play better HS football too.

lol....both are new coaches and teams will get better.
