It was outside the riviera, he was about to JK's radio show.

I remember that. People used to be able to dash between the Stardust and Riviera sportsbook in 30 seconds. Just run across the street and thru the Riviera food court and you were there. Then they put a barrier in the street island to keep people from doing it. I recall several times JK hosted a show from 9-10P at the Stardust and 10-11P at the Riviera. The Stardust show ended about 9:57 and the second he could leave JK did and left Gene Harvey to take care of the end of the show and he was at Riviera in time to start the 10P show.

Back in the day his instincts were phenomenal. He could tell if a team was laying too little or getting too much based on the history of a program. I'm not talking Duke, Indiana or North Carolina, but the Siena's, Duquesne, Creighton et al. He knew the coaches and the type of players they recruited.

Times are different now, 1 and done, portals, buyouts... instincts no longer prevail.

35 to 30 second clock the biggest factor by far

AB was best on smaller schools. He couldn't do it as much for stuff like ACC or Big 10 but for something like the A10 or Ivy League - he was unreal.

My favorite tournament story starts with the Stardust Line radio show, going back to 2003, hosted by JK with Boston and Dave Cokin.

Discussion of the possibilities ensues for Coach Boeheim's Syracuse Orange featuring Carmelo Anthony, Hakim Warrick and guard Gerry McNamara. Cokin thought they might go far, while AB, displaying all his drug-induced bias in full glory, comes over the top saying "they can't play a lick". Says he'll buy Cokin a free lunch every week for life if Syracuse does well.

The rest is history as Syracuse runs the table. Cokin is still waiting for his first lunch.

I am sure all those who lived in Alan's former Xclusive Summerline Neighborhood with small Children miss him terribly walking his Great Danes Leashless shitrless.

He tried to make "cute takes" like Roy Williams and Coach K are "overrated". I think he said it to be different but it was just plain foolish IMO to say such things.

Roy Williams and Coach K are on the Mount Rushmore of CBB coaches along with Wooden and one more guy (take your pick).

roy and k are not rushmore, they got out coached when facing equally talented teams

I remember when he learned Donovan, then with Florida, awarded a big screen tv to one of his summer campers.

Turns out that camper would eventually commit to Fla. The rant was legendary.

If you look at YouTube, they have stuff of Calipari and Petino in practice and basketball camps, they can coach!

My top 3. One active, one retired, one dead.
Chris beard
John beilien
Rick majerus

Good 'coaching' list. So many great x and o guys. Altman, Huggins, Morrill and of course Carril at Princeton. Who can forget that upset of UCLA.

Boyles adventures with Stations wouldn't happen anymore. Back then bettors had the edge. Now everything is readily available.

Here's another Boston tidbit. He called a Ivy League Sports Information guy posing as a reporter to gain info on a players status. That's what I mean by edge back then.

beilein and majerus definitely.

chris beard? way too early.

shaka smart's full resume of head coaching is stronger than chris, and i am not even a big fan of either guy.

brad stevens' resume crushes beard's at this point in time.

It's interesting about some of these legendary coaches including Wooden. They always have a master mind next to them. Wooden had Cunningham, Boeheim had the assistant who orchestrated the match up zone and so on... sometimes these guys get too much credit.

Dana Altman good
Bob Huggins pretty good
Stew Morrill good
Pete Carrill incredible.

there are many great coaches in history.

but the fact is that Roy Williams and Coach K and Dean Smith and Bobby Knight and John Wooden all won at the highest level.

that is 5 guys who all deserve to be on the Mount Rushmore.

Beilein is an absolute witch - but to be on Mount Rushmore you need to be a witch and do it at the highest level MULTIPLE times.

it is like in tennis. sure, Edberg and Becker and Lendl and McEnroe were great.

but they are not FED RAFA DJOKOVIC

JOHN WOODEN
ROY WIILIAMS
COACH K
DEAN SMITH
BOBBY KNIGHT

next level each guy MULTIPLE championships.

honorable mention are guys like Boeheim.

all of these cute mid major guys were at the mid majors for a reason.

let's talk VINCE LOMBARDI types, not small or mid school level guys.

Beilein coached at Michigan but how many championships?

see my point?

Mid-major coaching is different (pure) than the next level. Altman is a perfect example. He ran a ton of back screens at Creighton, seldom now at Oregon. Better athletes, more iso.

Those schools aren't getting Alcindors or Carmelos..which helps to put a trophy on the mantle 😁
