It's really sad. I stayed in Lahaina for my honeymoon. Beautiful historic fisherman's village in Maui. Whole town wiped out.

Yea, the big banyan tree or whatever, scorched. Gonna be years before they rebuild as Hawaiian culture is slow.

And, BTW. If you know Maui, the road from the airport parallels the mountains as it traverses the west shore. There is no way in hell the fire bent around the island. The likely source is homeless street scum living up above Lahina where the water aquafiers run into Lahina.

To add, drug addicts, alcoholics and lazy street scum just caused the island millions if not more in lost tourism dollars. Cheers to liberals and their politicians. May the blue thrive.

At least one of the fires on the main island is believed to have been started purposely

I understand that in an uncontrolled fire event like this,the fire dept is overwhelmed and cant prevent much, my question is did they protect anything at all? Presumably with their equipment, hoses, water pressure etc, they should have been able to protect a few buildings, I suspect they didn't even try.

Almost certainly it was arson from homeless camps, those strong winds from the hurrican offshore were not confined to maui, apparently they were the only place with wild fires.

I saw a report that rainfall across the islands has been above normal with maui being the only island being slightly below avg(1.5 inches) - that's nothing, hawaii gets a lot of rain,.

Hawaii gets so much rain it's hard to imagine these kinds of wildfires. It's one thing in CA where they normally go 8 months or so without a drop. Those aren't surprising.

It's like the old jerry lewis telethon, lots of people say they will give, they're often full of shit when to comes to paying. Zero chance bezoz pays for anything IMO.
