Crazy idea, surge pricing only works if you have a captive customer with little or no options, people will say " I guess i dont need a wendy's that bad" and go somewhere else.

Yup, and it's works because most people are stuck at airports or perhaps drunk on NY eve , etc and the only other options like taxis are even more.
