Looking To Get Back Into Horses

The Nugget has no more gamble in them. Even though they consistently showed a profit throughout last year with 10 cent baseball lines to -190 and huge limits. They have all but about closed up shop for anyone looking to get down more then a dime. Just like all of Vegas casinos.

Snowman is now running the book at the Nugget and we did work out were I can get some nice limits but still the hold on bases has almost doubled. New owners so his hands are tied. It is actually hard to believe they were taking 10/5 from me last year in CFB so at least I give them guys back then credit.

I am staying at Green Valley Ranch in a few weeks and I am sure they probably won't take a bet either.

Same happened at Tahoe, first Harrah's buys Harvey's, closes thier own book, consolidates with Harvey's, a real corporate move. Caesar's increases hold on all sports, where you cannot bet or scalp. They also cut book in half and open new slot area. Then cut remaining half down another third, for more slots. Sahara, then High Sierra, then Horizon just went the Leroy's route, don't even manage a book on their own property. Also, cut small book in half, left isle to bet sports, poker area now taking over. Any bet over a dime requires supervisor approval, and they look you over like you are passing fake bills. Halfway sharp and buy only steam? 86'd in a week to a month. These guys went from high profile packed sportsbooks to a corporate squeeze the last cents out of these dinosaurs, before we push them into the tar pit.

Take a trip to Del Mar or Santa Anita the 30 minutes in between wont be long enough.

I have been playing horses daily for 20 years so I know that if you can hit your spot 3 to 4 times a year you can turn a profit. Most don't but it can be done.

I was betting Longacres back in 79. Danny Sorenson apprenticed that year there. With that weight advantage and that slop, he would rush to front and coast. With or without stickers. Was stationed in Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. Stayed at Bangor or something. Rained everyday, everyday. Except 6 week summer. Nice track actually, good attendence back then. Used to hit and run there to Pike's. Munch all the good fresh seafood. Caught a ton of nice salmon in the sound. Almost bit the big one in Straights of Juan De Fuego. Nice place, but even as a FROG I started getting waterlogged.

Sadly Longacres closed maybe '94 when Boeing bought the land for an office park, freeway close location just to valuable for a short racing season. Great old track with a Santa Anita Jr. feel to it. Emerald Downs was built about 15 miles south and it's generic at best, county fair meet feeling to the place. You may have been at Bremerton FROG, Bangor is close by, but that's where the nuke subs are. Pike's still great but tourist trap prices turn me off. Great fishing still around. I live walking distance between the Puyallup and Carbon rivers 40 miles SE of Seattle. Salmon moving upstream for spawning heavily this time of year, see 'em all over when walking the levee. We do get our rain though... Emerald green everything is nice but at times I miss Calif...

Yes, Bummerton was the small sailor hater town right outside the shipyards. Used to catch the ferry there to Seattle. We stayed at Bangor because the Tridents were not there yet. The bunkers were. Since we were sub guys, they let us stay there. We trashed the place because we were not to fond of boomers, Trident part timers. They said mean things to us to reprimand the crew. Used to hang with the Marines at the EM club there, what a dive. One night they had to waste some peace loving protestor who was determined to plant a flower on a bunker. He was flower food after crossing second wire. Use of deadly force authorized. Poor girlfriend sitting outside the fence waiting for him. One of my marine pals asked her if she wanted a new boyfriend, he was available. Crazy fuckers. Yes, it was good old Bangor.

Track was well built, nice stands, very nice turf club and vip boxes. Had our radioman pick me up racing form on his morning mail run. Cap on watch, have everything capped before I went. If you bought the local papers, you knew who the favorites would be. There was a huge lack of sharp money. Was quite the experience. Heard it closed down long ago. Too bad, that place had some nostagilia. Still have my green Longacres Doo Dah sticker.

The market is a tourist trap, no doubt. Was not so bad back then, just starting to go commercial. Still, was a ton of wide eyed tourists, and a lot of cute babes. Tell you what, except for the stinky wet paper bag smell, that area was one of the most beautiful I have encountered. Everything green and lush, green everywhere. Was very close to moving there after tour was up. Did not want to be a lifer diesel tech. After a 29 out of 30 day rain month, I decided better suited for a hot dry climate.

I remember the smokehouse places where the mighty Mo was anchored. Awesome smoked salmon, kippered and lox. Probably best I ever had.

Remember the snappy bar at Longacres named for Eddie Arcaro FROG? Sure was a classy old place for a real non-racing hotbed area.

You'd be surprised at the security around Bangor now with nukes there, can't hardly get off of the highway before hitting a guard shack. Bremerton is a shitty old town, homes under $100k can still be found there but old and tired looking. Other than USN bases that area is depressed, logging long gone and tribes call the shots on fishing there. Two for them and one for non-natives. We eat salmon here like we ate oranges off the trees in Calif...

Where are you at?
