it seemed like they gave up an entire team to get him.....

Miami Dolphins coach Don Shula once traded a wide receiver named Anthony Carter to the Vikings for a LB named Robin Senlein

1988: Yanks throw away Jay Buhner to Mariners for Ken Phelps....

When I saw this thread... That trade came to mind.... :(

Following is portion of a worst Yankee trades article.....

July 21, 1988: Traded Jay Buhner, Rich Balabon and Troy Evers to the Seattle Mariners for Ken Phelps

"How could you have traded Buhner for Ken Phelps?" The line made famous by George Costanza's acerbic dad Frank on Seinfeld could have easily been uttered by any Yankee fan in the 1990s....

.

.

.

Steinbrenner coveted Phelps, daydreaming about the carnage he'd inflict on the league once given an everyday chance to take aim at the short right-field porch in Yankee Stadium. But by the time he hit New York, Phelps was going on 34 years old, his best days behind him.

Meanwhile the Yankees gave up way too soon on Buhner, a player 10 years Phelps' junior who ironically had a very similar skill set, with tons of power and patience mixed with a so-so batting average. The Yankees had previously engineered a heist, having dealt Steve Kemp, Tim Foli, and cash to the Pirates in December 1984 for Dale Berra, Alfonso Pulido and Buhner. But the Phelps deal wiped out most of the benefit of that steal. The man known as Bone went on to become one of the greatest .254 hitters to ever play the game, crunching 310 career homers, gunning down legions of baserunners who dared test his cannon arm and serving as a focal point for some of the best teams in Mariner history.

Actually, the Yanks traded Sterling Hitchcock and Russ Davis for TINO, Nelson, Mecir..... Still a very good deal for the Yanks.... :)

However, the Mariners knew they were getting the worst of this deal...

Seattle realized they couldn't re-sign Tino... So they were simply trying to get the most value they could before losing Tino to free agency anyway....

The trade "package" offered by the Yanks was actually much better than any package offered by any other interested team.... :cheers

This trade is always brought up in these conversations. The Tigers needed a veteran starter to beef up for the stretch run. Alexander went 8-0 (or somthing like that) and was a huge reason the Tigers were able to run down the Jays for the division title. Obviously longterm it was terrible but they did accomplish what they set out to do.

Supposedly Bryant was going to be drafted by the NJ Nets, but he refused to play for them. Maybe he refused to play for Hornets also and the trade wasn't something that was in the Hornets control?

Re: Greatest Trade Robberies Of All Time

The Joe Thornton deal will be legendary for years in NHL circles. A lot of the mentioned deals in this thread were for prospects that turned out good or bad, but Thornton was a proven NHL star and just 26 when the Bruins basically bent over and said screw us we suck anyways.

Pedro Guerrero for Future MLB HOFer Bruce Ellingsen

think the Indians wish they coulda done this deal all over again?

hard to believe this one didn't make the list:

Giants get: A.J. Pierzynski
Twins get: Joe Nathan, Boof Bonser AND Francisco Liriano

ONLY thing keeping this one off the list - maybe - is Liriano's health - but if he pitches in 2008 anywhere near what he did in 2006............YIKES

hard to pass up some "winners" by the LA Kings back in the days - trading 1st round picks for over-the-hill guys. one trade they made saw the first round pick they gave to Boston used to draft RAY BOURQUE! the list only gets worse and worse for Kings' fans

Notable hockey blunders: Joe Thornton for Stuart and Sturm was a joke.

In Leaf land it's Gord Stellick trading Russ Courtnall away for John Kordic (goon)
Trading away the 1st round draft pick (Scott Niedermayer) for Tom Kurvers.
But then getting back Doug Gilmour from Calgary for basically nothing when Gilmour went on to have an MVP year. Here was the trade:

To Toronto: Jamie Macoun, Ric Nattress, Kent Manderville, and Rick Wamsley
To Calgary: Gary Leeman, Alexander Godynyuk, Jeff Reese, Michel Petit and Craig Berube.

Re: Greatest Trade Robberies Of All Time

I normally would vote for the Walker trade, with the only caveat being that Dallas still had to select the right players will all the picks. Thankfully they did and gave me a great run.
