Re: MLB- WINTER MEETING RUMORS

The New York Mets and New York Yankees have both checked in on right-hander Kelvim Escobar, repirts The New York Post's Joel Sherman, via Twitter.
Sherman also says that Escobar may play winter ball in his native Venezuela to showcase his health to clubs before signing a contract, similar to what the plans appear to be for Carlos Delgado.
Escobar could be targeted as a starter or reliever, probably depending on the status of his arm, but which role he'd fit in either NYC clubhouse is unclear, particularly considering the decisions that loom for the Yankees regarding Phil Hughes and Joba Chamberlain.

3 way from MLBTR

The deal would send Curtis Granderson to the Yanks, along with a prospect or two from the D'Backs. Arizona would obtain Edwin Jackson from the Tigers and Ian Kennedy from the Yankees. The Tigers would obtain Max Scherzer from the D'Backs and Austin Jackson, Phil Coke and Michael Dunn from the Yanks.

Re: MLB- WINTER MEETING RUMORS

According to Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times, the Seattle Mariners have offered Felix Hernandez a 4-year, $45 million contract extension, which seems like just a base place to start, since Hernandez can probably make more than half of that in the next two years via arbitration.
Clubs have asked about acquiring Hernandez by way of trade this offseason, but have been rebuffed to date. One has to wonder if talks come to a screeching halt on an extension for the right-hander if GM Jack Zduriencik doesn't start calling some of those teams back to see what he may be able to get in return for his young star pitcher.
UPDATE: SI.com's Jon Heyman writes this afternoon that Hernandez and agent Alan Nero ware seeking "about" $100 million over six years, and will use CC Sabathia's $23 million average annual salary as the benchmark.

Re: MLB- WINTER MEETING RUMORS

Orioles president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail confirmed Monday that he's interested in bringing back free agent Erik Bedard.
The O's have asked for Bedard's medical records and view him as an inexpensive, albeit high-risk, signing. The 30-year-old left-hander has struggled with injuries since leaving Baltimore but he was 5-3 with a 2.82 ERA in 15 games with the Mariners this season when healthy.

The Braves are "really pushing" for a Derek Lowe trade, according to David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal Constitution. The righty has three years and $45MM remaining on his contract, so the club would prefer to part with him than Javier Vazquez, who's more affordable ($11.5MM salary in 2010) and more effective.

The Braves are also getting "nibbles" on Kelly Johnson and Ryan Church. There's more interest in Johnson than Church.

Brandon Lyon has declined the Tigers' offer of arbitration.
Lyon stood to make close to $6 million through the arbitration process, but will instead seek out a multi-year deal on the open market. The 30-year-old posted a 2.86 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 15 holds in 65 appearances while serving as Detroit's primary setup man in 2009 and has drawn a fair amount of interest.

Re: MLB- WINTER MEETING NEWS & RUMORS

In various trade talks with clubs Monday, MacPhail said that teams have inquired about "no shortage of names" on the Orioles. Several team sources identified outfielder Felix Pie as having drawn a lot of inquiries.

However, MacPhail didn't sound like he was motivated to move Pie despite the fact that he's currently expected to enter the season as the club's fourth outfielder.

"Pie, [Nolan] Reimold and [Adam] Jones haven't played full seasons healthy yet," MacPhail said. "That's nobodies fault, but I'm figuring I need as many guys as I can to get through the year. I'm not a believer that if you have three guys for three positions, you're all set. We know that you need to have four or five for three positions and maybe you're set. I don't look at that as a logjam at all." Quote:

• The Yankees have talked to Andy Pettitte’s agents, and Pettitte is open to coming back to the Yankees.
• The Yankees have discussed Jason Marquis (but it’s impossible to say whether the Yankees are interested in Marquis, or Marquis is interested in the Yankees).
• Brian Bruney is going to the Nationals.
• The Yankees have the first pick of the Rule 5 draft (that’s a fact, not a rumor).
• Left field is a priority, designated hitter is not

Re: MLB- WINTER MEETING NEWS & RUMORS

According to Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Cardinals may inquire about the Nationals' Adam Dunn if they are unable to retain free agent outfielder Matt Holliday.
Interestingly, Strauss writes that several within the organization privately rooted for the team to land Dunn over Holliday last summer. Dunn is owed $12 million in the final year of a two-year deal. The Nationals haven't acknowledged that they are seeking offers for Dunn, but they would almost certainly require pitching in return for the 30-year-old slugger.

Re: MLB- WINTER MEETING NEWS & RUMORS

Adrian Beltre turned down the Mariners' offer of arbitration, according to Yahoo's Tim Brown. Beltre is a Type B free agent, so he won't cost a draft pick, but the Mariners will obtain a supplementary pick if the third baseman signs elsewhere.

According to FOXSports.com, the Yankees, Diamondbacks and Tigers have discussed a blockbuster trade at this week's winter meetings.
Ken Rosenthal says "talks are at an impasse," but here's the breakdown: The Yankees would receive Curtis Granderson from the Tigers and two prospects from the D'Backs. The Tigers would get Max Scherzer from the Diamondbacks, with center fielder Austin Jackson and left-handed relievers Phil Coke and Michael Dunn also coming over from the Yankees. Arizona would get Edwin Jackson from the Tigers and Ian Kennedy from the Yanks. The deal is reportedly being "pushed by the Diamondbacks."

Re: MLB- WINTER MEETING NEWS & RUMORS

Mike Gonzalez has turned down arbitration to explore the market, according to Yahoo's Tim Brown. Rafael Soriano accepted the Braves' offer earlier tonight, so the Braves have a deep bullpen even without Gonzalez.

Gonzalez is a Type A free agent, so they stand to gain a pair of top picks if he signs elsewhere.
