Winning without obsessing;one bettors way...

What you contemplate you imitate
There's a guy on a horse racing forum who limits his action to mostly the last 4 races in New York on weekends. He'll cap that sequence in order to try and hit the Pick 4.If the first race doesn't win the handicapping on the rest doesn't go to waste as there's still a Pick 3 and a late Daily Double to profit from.

Going into the final with live tickets, depending on the will pays,or tote action, he'll occasionally carefully hedge with win bets for insurance, to try and assure at least a break even.

Except for a few special events like the Triple Crown,Breeders Cup, and some race cards scattered through the year, the NYRA[AQU/BEL/SAR] final 4 represents most of his horse play.

Sticking to this niche allows this guy to focus his attention to detail, the strike rate is pretty good, and most years are profitable.Betting like this isn't very time consuming[relatively],compared with spending untold hours/days churning a bankroll vs. the ever present takeout % to squeeze out a positive return with rebates.

Gambling action/compulsion might feel good physically,as the brains Dopamine receptors get fired up/stimulated,but it drains the bettor over the long term financially, and in other ways.Sticking to a program, systematically limiting downside and the efforts spent on sheer activity, can be more rewarding in the long run

This IS a great post and I fully agree. Haven't looked in the horse forum in a long while as there used to be little of value here... But this is on target.:clapping:

this cuts off all the 2 yr old maiden races, hurdles (stga) the short fields you usually find in some of the earlier races, allows you to observe what happened without risk in the first 5 or 6, keeping your head clear and your bankroll intact in order to concentrate on the last 4 which you can try to take down horizontally or vertically. you need patience and discipline and the human mind can handle 4 races with this wide array of betting options without chasing earlier losses. will start this today.

It doesn't have to be the last 4 races at any track specifically, though that might work for you too,the point was to narrow ones focus generally.
Your insight on what the human mind can handle is spot on,sticking with a program and using a less is more approach can lead to bettor outcomes.
With all the choices available everyday, understanding, accepting, and self imposing limits can result in sharper results over time.
Placing fewer wagers makes it easier to be aware of what we're doing, and make any needed adjustments.
Action for its own sake is the #1 gamblers ruin...
