I am trying to learn how to handicap pitcher. If you had only 5 stats to handicap a pitcher what would those be?

Re: Handicapping pitchers

1. whip 2. era 3. 3. k-bb ratio 4. quality starts. string of at least 6 ip, 6 hits or less, 3 runs or less. not more walks than k's. 5. home vs road performances. don't fall for the lifetime record vs a certain club. never the same hitters faced previously for the most part.

Number 1: game scores. This is to a pitcher what a speed figure is to a racehorse. When you look thru the pitcher's seasonal log, sometimes a couple horrific outings can wreck year to date stats and distort what a typical outing is. Some of the advanced stats have their use and you can customize thru Fangraphs. For instance if you want to see a pitcher's ERA and XFIP in his last 8 starts, instead of full year to date, you can.

What is up with Fangraphs? They are apparently such a fan of Billy Beane, they've adopted the "my shit don't work in the postseason" line literally. Try looking up Zach Greinke or any other pitcher in the postseason to see their recent game logs, and you won't find them. According to Fangraphs, the season ended October 1st.
