'No class': Ex-governor Chris Christie calls out Dan Campbell after Lions bury Cowboys
The NFL world watched with glee last Sunday as the
Detroit Lions demolished one of the league's most hated franchises, the Dallas Cowboys, 47-9, in their own building.
But you know who didn't love it? Dallas Cowboys fans. And that includes former New Jersey governor Chris Christie, apparently.
During a radio hit with Chris "Mad Dog" Russo on "Mad Dog Unleashed" this week, Christie was asked how he felt about his Cowboys getting their noses rubbed in the defeat with a whole bunch of trick plays and other tomfoolery.
The Lions seemingly wanted revenge on Dallas, where Lions head coach Dan Campbell played several years as a tight end, after last year's officiating disaster, in which the Lions believe they wrongly had a victory stolen from them.
"That's Dan Campbell. He's got no class. Never has," said Christie about the non-stop use of trickery despite the game being well out of hand.
"It's fine. It's fine. Look, Dan Campbell, that's the way he is, and what goes around comes around."
In a Week 17 contest at Dallas last season, the Lions scored a touchdown with 23 seconds left to cut their deficit to 20-19 and attempted to win the game in regulation with a two-point conversion. A successful trick pass that was completed to left tackle Taylor Decker appeared to do just that — until referees ruled that it was instead swing tackle Dan Skipper who reported as eligible on the play, thus nullifying the score with a penalty.
Detroit's second attempt at the two-point conversion was called back for a defensive penalty, and the third failed outright, as the Lions walked out of Dallas with a one-point loss. Campbell and the other Lions players involved were emphatic after the game that they properly reported to officials before the critical play but to no avail.
Fast-forward to the 2024 meeting, where the Lions called multiple trick plays — including multiple designed to get an offensive lineman in the end zone — in the second half of a blowout victory.
Russo clarified: So you were bothered by it?
"Well, I just think it was — look, I think it was misdirected," Christie continued. "Dan Campbell's angry because the referees got a call wrong in the game a year ago. Well, then, run that play on (NFL commissioner) Roger Goodell. The Cowboys had nothing to do with the play being called incorrectly. It wasn't a challenge the Cowboys made. It was a call the referees made; the Lions got hurt by it, and the Cowboys benefited from it."
"Now so because of that, you want to take your (anger) out over that while you're beating the hell out of these guys and rub it in? I don't think it's what pros do. But it's his prerogative; it's the reputation that he'll carry around."
For Cowboys fans, Sunday is the nightmare they can't wake up from.
