10-14-06 College Plays

7-10-1 overall on the EOG plays, but on the road back with 7-2 the last three weeks. I like the card for the coming week, although the status of some injured players will have to be cleared up on some of my potential plays. Here's the early trio for the coming week.

348 Washington State +9
I might be getting in the way of an express train here, but I really feel as though Washington State is an underrated team that can compete with the Bears this Saturday. There's no way I can try to make a case against Cal, although at least we get the Bears coming off what was a very big game for them as they obliterated Oregon. But I've been high on Washington State since prior to the season, and they haven't disappointed me aside from their opening week defeat at Auburn. Even in that game, the Cougars were hanging in before they got fooled on a fake punt that seemed to sap their energy and resolve. Washington State has a very capable defense and if they don't turn the ball over, there's no reason they can't make this a contest and perhaps pull off the upset. This team has been a thorn in Cal's side, winning and covering four straight before last season when they fell 42-38 in a wild game, and the Cougs did easily cover the spread in that contest. In fact, they should have won, but an ill-advised fake punt while leading 38-28 turned the game. I see this year's matchup being a different type of game, but believe it will again go right to the wire.

365 Hawaii -5'
I usually avoid the obvious, but won't hesitate here. Fresno State is a total disaster right now. The comments following the shocking loss at Utah State indicate that this team is in a complete haze right now. Nothing is going right. The QB can't play, the special teams are terrible, and the defense utterly collapsed when it counted, and that was against Utah State. I think the line opened way too short here, and would have made Hawaii -8. The visitor is clearly superior right down the line, they have positive momentum, and the Hawaii effort at Boise State convinces me that having to journey to the mainland won't be an issue. I don't have a real explanation as to what has happened at Fresno and why this team has fallen apart mentally, but I don't see this as something that can be fixed in a few days. I fully expect this number to go up, so buy low on Hawaii.

384 Texas -28'
Note that I actually laid 28 on this, but I'm going to post the play including the hook as that was the number at the store I use for these writeups (I decided before the season that the only fair way to grade these plays was to use one store's line at the time I write up the games, and that store has this game -28' right now.) Anyway, how does Baylor score in this game? I don't think they will. The Bears throw it almost all the time, and when they do run it's mostly with little success. Texas should be able to push these guys all over the field in maintaining a streak of 30 plus point wins over Baylor that's currently at seven and counting. I also am one who believes that there are certain programs where beating opponents by enough to cover the spread is of some importance, and definitely put the Longhorns in that select group. That's fine with me, as it makes it less risky to lay huge lumber. I've commented on the radio that while I like the direction Guy Morris is giving Baylor, I thought they would have been better off not going to the Texas Tech spread offense with his current personnel, and I still believe that's the case. But Morriss has the Bears in the hunt for a bowl bid off the Colorado win, as they're now 3-3 with home games vs. Kansas and A&M on deck. Those are winnable games, this one isn't, and while I'm sure Baylor would like to do well, I think this is a potential mail it in spot for the Bears. Texas can win this by six touchdowns and I think that's just about what they'll do.

Holy Smokes Dave, you are being RIPPED,,,,

Holy Smokes Dave, you are being RIPPED,,,,

on the radio right now. AM here in Vegas, 1400. Just flippin the dial and caught the recap show "Gary" something or other. Using words like "boiler room", watch out for Pac 10 GOY's coming up next, SEC, ect. Also not kind to Teddy, ripping him for his loser GOY 2 weeks ago on Texas A&M. Says he talked to several shops in town and that Kansas was A HUGE play around town.

Keep up the good work Dave, I appreciate your posting here.:+thumbs-2

P.S. He did say you ripped him on Friday, FWIW

I ripped who on Friday? First of all, I never rip any competitors publicly...ever. Second, I wasn't even on the air Friday. The daily show was kayoed all week for the baseball playoffs. So I have no idea what this is about.

I would assume the segment you're talking about from today, I'm guessing it's a caller to a local gaming show who drives a limo for his livelihood? I'm told he calls in to this show on Monday and trashes virtually everyone in the gaming industry, except for the host of this particular show. I've never heard the guy, as I almost never listen to the show (I'm usually either prepping my own show or eating lunch when this program airs, so I have no way to hear it) but I've been told all about him. Again, this is all second hand info as far as I go, but this guy is pretty much regarded as a buffoon who tries to come off like an authority on gaming and how to run a hotel/casino (like the actual people in charge don't know what they're doing).

As for the host of the show, I've met him a few times and he seems like a nice enough guy to me. We evidently differ philosophically on publicly talking about the competition. Personally, I never do it. I can go into a long dissertation as to why I feel it's a poor business decision to do so, but that's the bottom line. He apparently doesn't believe that to be the case. I think he's wrong on this count, but it's his show and he's completely free to run it the way he sees fit.

Re: 10-14-06 College Plays

For any just following Dave this year, he has had arguably the best five year run any tout has ever had, I believe overall at above 60% ATS with his three best plays every Sunday night lookahead lines.

Even if he hits only .500 this year, he STILL has to be considered one of the best college football handicappers out there.

OF course, he still works for Jim Feist. :doh1 However, do you miss the Shield episodes just because you have to watch commercials? OF COURSE NOT!!

Re: 10-14-06 College Plays

hey, there's no doubt Gary Greene goes off a bit, but he delivers good info and is picking winners, thats all that matters. He gave out BYU and E.Carolina this week.
Glad to see Dave Cokin is back on fire also. His show on Sunday nights is flat out the best two hours of radio in Vegas.

Oh, this was Gary Greene ripping me? I had no idea he even had a show. I thought it was someone on another show where my name evidently comes up on a regular basis.

I don't mean this as a slap in Gary's face (my not being aware he has a show). I just don't listen to sports betting shows at all and I'm somewhat ignorant as to who's doing what these days. I spend enough hours each week working on this stuff, the last thing I want is to hear someone else talking about it. Thankfully, I have a life that doesn't revolve around this 24/7. I think I would go nuts if it did.

But in any case, the same comments hold true for Gary as were mentioned previously. I have no idea why someone would buy air time and spend even one minute of it mentioning the competition. Makes zero sense to me. If I'm purchasing time, you can bet your bottom dollar I'd be promoting myself and my sponsors, but I would never even acknowledge the competition's existence. But what do I know...I've only been doing this since 1981 and by making sure NOT to burn bridges I ended up crossing over into mainstream media while still maintaining a gaming personna. I would think most sharp individuals would see how this can be highly beneficial, and I'm hardly egotistical enough to believe I'm the only one good enough to pull this off.

However, that's just my take and if others feel that they're better served by journeying down a different path, that's fine by me.

Since I listen to the Hansen & Cokin Show just about every day on ESPN920, I should have known you weren't even on the radio. Taking Columbus Day off Dave? :+clueless Even the DMV was open on Monday! Was looking forward to hearing Coach Sanford. Maybe today?

Well, you weren't the only one caught by surprise on the Columbus Day no go. I went to the studio at the usual time, completely forgetting it was a holiday and not knowing there was no show. :+signss13-

Coach Sanford was on today. Pretty interesting segment, especially his revelation that the only reason Urban Meyer took the Florida gig over Notre Dame is that there were better players in place at Florida.
