Aundray Bruce

College career

Bruce was named All-Southeastern Conference in 1986 and 1987, All-American in 1987, and Citrus Bowl MVP in 1987. He first garnered national attention in a nationally-televised game in 1987 against Georgia Tech by intercepting three passes and returning one for a touchdown and making 10 unassisted tackles. Entering the NFL Draft, he was widely hyped as the next Lawrence Taylor.<sup id="cite_ref-0" class="reference"></sup> He graduated from Auburn in 1988 as an education major.

Professional career

Bruce was drafted with the first overall pick in the 1988 NFL draft by the Atlanta Falcons<sup id="cite_ref-1" class="reference"></sup> Although he was the first overall pick, Bruce started only 42 games in his 11 year career. Bruce enjoyed his most prominent role on the Falcons 1991 playoff team when he saw spot duty on offense as a tight end as well as defense. He signed with the Los Angeles Raiders as a free agent in 1992 and finished his career with the organization. Bruce played in 151 games over his 11 season career, posting 32 sacks and 4 interceptions. He was quite serviceable in Oakland but never lived up to the high expectations.

Nice retrospective draft by the falcons. Three shots to get pro bowl players and they got guys you never heard of all 3 rounds.

Bengals and the Cards have had a long history of taking reaches with their picks, so they can sign them cheaper. They always held out too.

He was good though.

Remember this draft well. John Stephens, Craig Heyward, Brad Muster, Lorenzo White, and Ickey Woods all drafted before Thurman Thomas. They kept showing Thurman as he was getting more pissed.

Wendell Davis blew out both knees on the same play at the Vet, ending his NFL career.

They traded it and the 1989 1st rounder to the Bears for the rights to Wilbur Mashall. Washington never valued their high picks much. Here's a look:

  • The first player ever selected in the draft, Heisman Trophy winner Jay Berwanger, chose not to play pro football. Riley Smith, taken second overall by the Boston Redskins, holds the distinction of being the first drafted player to play in the NFL.<sup id="cite_ref-47" class="reference">[48]</sup>

Good draft for the Eagles grabbing Keith Jackson and Eric Allen with their 1st 2 picks.

Cowboys with a strong showing as well.

Some of the trades were great too. Looking at the footnotes, 19 was a great trade, 24 was a damn steal, 25, Dave Butz was very good too.
