John Daly suspended for 6 months by PGA Tour

John Daly has been suspended for six months by the PGA Tour for conduct that brought unwelcome publicity, including a night in a North Carolina jail to sober up.
"Is it fair that I got suspended? It's not fair in reality, but it's probably fair in perception," he told The Associated Press on Wednesday.
This is the second time the tour has suspended the two-time major champion, along with at least two other times he agreed to take time off to get his life in order. The 42-year-old Daly called this the lowest point in his wild 18-year career.
He has not played on the PGA Tour since he missed the cut Oct. 17 in Las Vegas. Ten days later, police in Winston-Salem, N.C., said he appeared intoxicated outside a Hooters restaurant, and he was taken to jail to sleep it off. That led to a photo of Daly in an orange jail suit with his eyes half-open.
PGA Tour spokesman Ty Votaw declined comment, even though Daly confirmed his suspension, citing the tour's longtime policy of not discussing fines or suspensions.
Daly decided to go public "to be fair to my fans and tournament organizers" during the first three months of the season when he typically plays on the West Coast and in Florida. His last victory was the Buick Invitational in 2004, and Daly said his five-year exemption as a past champion runs out this year.
He said he would continue playing the European tour, starting with a three-week swing in the United Arab Emirates.
"This is the lowest I've ever been," Daly said. "There's always light with me. Right now, my home tour is probably Europe. And I love the European tour. I always have. But my home is the United States. That's where I would rather play."
Daly isn't even sure when the suspension began, but he hopes it ends in May. He said PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem sent a letter to his agent, Bud Martin of SFX Sports, who passed along the news.
"Tim and his staff have to do what they do," Daly said. "Truly and honestly, I wish Tim would get to know the facts better before he makes a decision. I would love to sit down and have a nice talk with him, tell him what really happened. But perception is reality in the world, and sometimes they have to do what they have to do."
Martin would only say the suspension was to end in the spring, adding "it remains confidential with the PGA Tour. He said Daly wants to use 2009 to turn his career around.

i've known this guy a lot of years and even guarded the gated community he lived in back in the 90's and met him a few times with a wink and a nod and a couple hundred to look the other way when he had his strippers and other illegal activities going on and he was always nice to me but can't seem to beat his demons.he used to have a hanger on who he would call thomas whose sole job it would be to get the party stuff ready such as the limo, the chicks, the drugs the chicks wanted, etc, etc. i remember being in the guard house one night really late and a naked screaming woman ran up to me and he comes running up to me drunker than all get out claiming she was freaking out on some kind of dope so i told him to get the chick shut up because the residents would call the law regardless of what i could do those doctors and lawyers have to go to work in the morning and i'm sure john got on their nerves.i also guarded the fed ex st. jude classic a couple years too and those were fun times and its a shame he just couldn't seem to be sober or in the right place mentally to play some of these events.

His story is truly a sad one. He capitvated golf fans - me included- with his win at Crooked Stick to take the Wanamaker Cup. Great potential squashed by addiction.

It's hard to comment on the suspension what with everything being kept confidential, but it just seems unfair that he would be suspended 6 months for the Hooter's incident in which Daly did nothing wrong. Hopefully(but I doubt it), there is more to it than this for the suspension.

Long John will always be a Tour favorite; as well as one of mine. He's a symbol of the imperfection of man and the personification of man's conflict with himself.
In other words, he's "Everyman" with a rocket-launcher for a driver.

Agree again....as long as we didn't talk politics, religion, or evolution, we'd probably get along fine! As a matter of fact, I'll offer you the same free round of golf that I offerred to our boy Munson15(and don't forget him in your prayers, he just had his hip surgery yesterday) if you ever get to Vegas.

I've not been to Vegas, but I tentatively plan on bankrupting a casino out there in 2009. I'll keep the golf in mind.

Does the PGA still sanction events at Caucasian only membership clubs? :pop:

Good question...I googled Caucasion only golf clubs and found this...

Unable to meet the requirement that clubs must have nondiscriminatory membership policies to host tournaments, the Aronimink Golf Club has asked to be relieved of its agreement to be the site of the 1993 P.G.A. Championship, the Professional Golfers? Association of America said tonight.
Aronimink, a private club in Newtown Square, Pa., near Philadelphia, has no minority-group members. [?]
O?Brien said the club had told the P.G.A. it had a seven-year waiting list for new members, but asked that it be considered as the site for a future championship when is is able to conform to the national association?s policy on membership.
However, 10 years later ? and three years after Chambliss?s golf event ? it?s still not clear whether the club had stopped its discriminatory policies. USA Today reported that as of April 2003, Aronimink had 325 members. Just five were women. The club ?declined to elaborate on the number of minority members.?

....so apparently the PGA does have a policy that requires courses which they use for PGA tournaments to have nondiscriminatory memebership policies, so the answer to your question is....

NO.
