Re: Fantasy Football News 2008

Real and Spectacular
Sometimes we see what we want to see. We see the Colts passing game revive for one week and think they are juggernauts again. We see Derek Anderson dropping bombs to Braylon Edwards on Monday Night Football and think the Browns season has started anew. We see the Chargers light it up against the Patriots and assume they are ready to make their run. We are all wrong.

After seven Sundays, we know a lot more about this season. The Colts and Bolts are inconsistent. The Browns wish they were. LaDainian Tomlinson is an average running back haunted by the ghosts of Priest Holmes and Shaun Alexander. The quicker owners adjust to the new realities of 2008, rather than what they'd like to see, the better they will do. Let's see what else we know after Week 7.

They're real and they're spectacular

1. I wrote that it might be a good time to sell Philip Rivers a few weeks ago, but he's played two straight excellent games and is ranked in the top-five of fantasy quarterbacks. He is still a low volume thrower (69 fewer passes than Drew Brees), but his sky-high yards-per-attempt average is keeping him steady. With LT2 a shell of his former self, the Chargers have evolved into a passing team.

2. After a slow start, Greg Olsen has developed into the fantasy tight end we were expecting. On a team bereft of wideout talent, Olsen is filling the gap as Kyle Orton's most consistent target. Few tight ends can combine his red zone skills and vertical speed.

3. Don't come back anytime soon, Willie Parker! Mewelde Moore is enjoying his well-earned time in the spotlight and will continue to be an excellent every-week play until Parker is up. I wrote up top about trends that have continued all year. One of the strongest ones: the Bengals terrible rush defense. Steve Slaton and Ahman Green get a crack at it this week.

4. Donnie Avery was a pick mocked by the Mock drafters, including myself. Whoops. His speed is a genuine problem for defenses. If not for a penalty and a poor throw by Marc Bulger, Avery would have scored three times against Dallas.

Stepping Off the Ledge

1. There was some complaining by Adrian Peterson owners after last week, but who else would you rather own at running back in standard leagues? Another rock solid game puts him on pace for nearly 1,600 rushing yards. He may not catch the ball much, but he's staying healthy and should catch Clinton Portis in the rushing yardage race.

2. T.J. Houshmandzadeh and Chad Johnson owners aren't going to recoup great draft value. But PPR owners can't be totally disappointed by the eight-catch, fiftysomething yard efforts of the Ryan Fitzpatrick era. Johnson tied for the day lead in targets Sunday. The Bengals wideouts are still ? useful. I had my doubts Fitzpatrick would get them that far.

3. Willis McGahee performed like a real live NFL starting running back, racking up 150 total yards against a Dolphins defense that is suddenly thin in the middle. I've been expecting this game from McGahee for a few weeks, but he didn't come out of the game fully healthy. Don't be surprised if he goes back to the McGahee of the first six weeks shortly.

4. Remember when people were complaining that Brandon Jacobs had stopped scoring? He now has six touchdowns in his last four games to go along with his 5.7 yards-per-carry average. He can be boom-or-bust in PPR leagues, but the Train is as steady as any running back in standard formats.

5. Steven Jackson may live up to his draft slot after all. All he needs is some competence from his teammates to give him scoring chances and he'll finish as a top-five running back. He appears to have worked himself into shape after missing so much of training camp. Now all he needs is that MRI to go well.

Danger Zone

Enjoy this Clinton Portis season because it shows no signs of slowing down. Keeper league owners may not like the year-after effects, though, if Portis keeps up his 373-carry pace.

Don't Panic

1. Marshawn Lynch doesn't appear to have the same burst and leg drive as last season. He appears to have gained a few more pounds, though. Still, his 3.5 yards-per-carry average isn't a huge concern because the schedule gets far easier moving forward. He's scoring more often (five times) and catching more passes. His 19 receptions is one more than he had all of last season.

2. Marques Colston didn't catch any of his four targets in his first week back. In fact, he dropped two passes. In the long run, he's still the most talented receiver on the most pass happy offense in the league. I'm more concerned with Jeremy Shockey, who produced 50 yards Sunday but doesn't seem fully healthy.

3. The Wildcat formation didn't work Sunday against the Ravens, but the rest of the Miami offense didn't work either. Ronnie Brown and company isn't ready to perform against the Ravens, but few are. Brown will produce most games.

Some Panic is Acceptable

1. The Reggie Bush run was fun while it lasted. Missing a month would give him plenty of time to play a few games before the fantasy playoffs start. Deuce McAllister has looked surprisingly competent in his place and will be a useful RB2/flex in the meantime. Pierre Thomas is worth owning again in deeper leagues.

2. Jason Campbell has taken a huge step forward as an NFL quarterback, but maybe he's not ready to graduate past being a backup in fantasy leagues. He's put up pedestrian totals in back-to-back home games against the Browns and Rams. Part of the problem is the game plan. This is a very conservative offense. Campbell can play quite well and not light up in the box score. He's the anti-Frerotte.

3. Tyler Thigpen is back in Kansas City, and that can't bode well for Dwayne Bowe and Tony Gonzalez. They put up some garbage time numbers against the Titans, but Thigpen will hurt the Chiefs long-term.

4. After four fumbles and two interceptions Sunday, J.T. O'Sullivan's job security is in question. Owners can also safely give up on Bryant Johnson, who looks likely to be planted on the bench behind impressive rookie Josh Morgan.

5. If Terrell Owens and Roy Williams couldn't produce against the Rams with Brad Johnson at quarterback, they certainly won't against the Bucs and Giants. Look for Tony Romo's finger to start magically healing. T.O. has only three more catches than Patrick Crayton on the season and two less than Greg Camarillo.
<!--RW-->
Life is unfair ?

1. Peyton Manning had a touchdown on consecutive fourth quarter plays overturned by review.

2. Zach Miller and JaMarcus Russell had a touchdown taken away because Javon Walker didn't line up correctly. Walker was not involved in the play.

Not buying it

Dan Orlovsky put up solid numbers for a second straight week, but he was extremely lucky. Calvin Johnson pulled in a meaningless Hail Mary pass at the end of the first half and got free for a 96-yard touchdown in the second half which made Orlovsky look a lot more competent than he was. Johnson owners should be concerned that those were his only two catches because they aren't repeatable feats. Most defenses would not have lost track of Megatron in either scenario. Orlovsky will turn back into a pumpkin when he's not facing Houston.

An Ode to Consistency

1. Vincent Jackson has gained at least forty yards in every game. He is finally making good on all that potential and is on pace for a solid 1,000-yard, WR3 season.

2. Lee Evans has topped 65 yards in every game. He's scored in three straight.

3. Steve Smith has topped 96 yards in four straight games. His yardage has maintained or increased every game this season. He's a top-five wideout in any format.

4. Gus Frerotte is averaging 257 yards-per-ugly-start. He's thrown for at least 220 yards and a score the last three weeks. Proving once again, you can get by at quarterback if you have to. Frerotte's buddy Bernard Berrian has at least 78 yards in five straight. He's scored in three straight weeks and is an every week play.

5. Greg Camarillo has at least four catches and 49 yards in his last five games. It doesn't sound like much, but he's proving to be Chad Pennington's favorite target and a great WR4/5 for your bench. Camarillo is on pace for 72 catches and 899 yards.

6. Matt Schaub has topped 265 passing yards for three straight weeks and now ranks in the top-five quarterbacks per-game. Andre Johnson in the last three games: 30 catches, 450 yards, and two scores. To answer all those emailers who thought I was exaggerating, yes I think he's the top wideout to own for the rest of the year.

Committee Time

1. Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams were back to splitting work evenly against the Saints. This trend isn't going away. Neither is the one where Stewart gets the ball near the stripe. Stewart has five rushing touchdowns on the season; Williams has two. DeAngelo has added two more through the air.

2. Cedric Benson is the new starter in Cincy, although he didn't perform any better than Chris Perry. Kenny Watson is now back in the mix. Perry can be dropped in most redraft leagues.

3. LenDale White and Chris Johnson split carries evenly, but it was mostly Johnson in the game when the game was in doubt. It just wasn't in doubt for long. White continues to vulture scores and now has eight on the season. His 80-yard touchdown was about as likely going into 2008 as a Rays World Series appearance. The Rays are infinitely more likely to repeat their accomplishment in the next five years.

4. The Titans, as expected, stuffed Jamaal Charles and Kolby Smith. Charles proved to be the better fantasy play with 43 total yards, helped along by four catches. Larry Johnson's possible suspension could keep the two on the fantasy radar.

5. Steve Slaton and Ahman Green split work almost evenly for the Texans Sunday, both excelling. This is what Gary Kubiak envisioned this off-season, although Green was supposed to be the lead back. It's taken seven weeks to get there, but the Texans running game is in great shape. Green is turning into a flex option in the right matchup.

6. Rudi Johnson had six carries to ten for rookie Kevin Smith. Smith easily outplayed Rudi and could earn more work next week.

Re: Fantasy Football News 2008

Cassel To Moss ... Finally
Coming into Monday night opposing passers had completed 72.7 percent of their throws for an average of 255.5 yards per game against the Broncos this season, which was good for an absolutely stunning 105.6 quarterback rating. Matt Cassel joined the party with three scores as the Patriots bounced back from an ugly loss to the Chargers by blowing out the Broncos in prime time.

Randy Moss hauled in a pair of scores and then spent much of the fourth quarter pumping up the home crowd from the sidelines, forgetting all about Tom Brady's injury for at least a little while. Cassel's performance was encouraging and Moss owners had to like seeing him do something other than pout late in a game, but not torching the Broncos probably would have been the bigger story.

Similarly, it's difficult to say whether the Patriots' much-maligned defense looked great or Jay Cutler injuring his finger on the game's first play ruined his chances of doing any damage. Cutler will have a Week 8 bye to rest and hopefully avoid a Tony Romo-type situation, because all the toughness in the world couldn't stop him from floating passes all over the field Monday night.

While the Broncos head into their bye at 4-3 despite allowing a league-worst 195 points, here are some other notes from around football ?

* Cassel and Moss shredding Denver's defense while Cutler struggled through a finger injury were the big stories Monday night, but New England's backfield also provided some fantasy headlines. Before the game the Patriots placed Laurence Maroney on injured reserve, shutting down the one-promising disappointment for the season because of lingering shoulder problems.

Sammy Morris made everyone forget all about Maroney by heading into halftime with 138 yards and a score on 16 carries, but didn't come out for the second half after suffering a knee injury. Not so long ago the Patriots had incredible backfield depth with Maroney, Morris, LaMont Jordan, and Kevin Faulk, but injuries forced them to turn to undrafted rookie Benjarvus Green-Ellis in the second half.

He joined everyone else in looking good against the Broncos, gaining 65 yards on 13 carries, but if Morris is sidelined it seems likely that Jordan will be asked to play through his calf injury in Week 8. If Morris' knee injury proves minor, then he has a good chance to emerge as an actual week-to-week fantasy asset, which has been impossible to find in the Patriots' backfield dating back to last season.

* With 660 yards from scrimmage, 42 grabs, five offensive touchdowns, and two more scores on punt returns Reggie Bush has arguably been this year's fantasy MVP through seven weeks, but a knee injury suffered Sunday has his season on hold. Bush underwent surgery Monday to repair the medial meniscus in his left knee and is expected to miss at least 2-4 weeks.

Bush will skip the Saints' trip to London for a Week 8 matchup with the Chargers, but the good news is that the team getting Week 9 off makes it possible that he'll miss just a couple games. Replacing Bush in the running game won't be all that difficult, because he's toted the ball just a dozen times per game while averaging a measly 3.4 yards per carry.

Deuce McAllister has just 48 carries in four games since bumping Pierre Thomas as Bush's backfield partner, but now should be in line for 15-18 runs each week. However, replacing Bush's all-around versatility and work in the passing game is far tougher. Thomas is a capable receiver and will be asked to shoulder much of the third-down load, so he's back on the fantasy radar and worth a pickup.

* Jake Delhomme revealed recently that he's spoken to Carson Palmer about the Tommy John elbow surgery he underwent last offseason, leading to speculation that Palmer is thinking about going under the knife himself. Delhomme said that he advised Palmer "not to be afraid" of having the ligament in his elbow replaced because "the surgery works" and "was a very easy rehab."

For now Palmer is said to be weighing his options while multiple doctors look at his MRI results, but he's already been ruled out for Week 8 and nothing suggests that he's capable of returning any time soon. Ryan Fitzpatrick will once again get the nod in Palmer's place after starting three of the past four games, but his total inability to stretch the field severely hampers the Bengals' offense.

Fitzpatrick has averaged a pathetic 4.7 yards on 103 passes to rank dead last in the NFL among quarterbacks with at least 100 throws, trailing the next-worst guy (Derek Anderson) by nearly a yard per attempt. He's also taken 15 sacks in three starts, predictably going down seven times versus the blitzing Steelers. In other words, Palmer's elbow hurts Chad Ocho Cinco and T.J. Houshmandzadeh too.

Two-Minute Drill: Matt Jones has topped his total from last year with 338 yards in six games, but reportedly has been suspended three games stemming from his July arrest for cocaine possession ? Larry Johnson allegedly spent the Chiefs' bye spitting in a woman's face and threatening to "kill her boyfriend" at a Kansas City nightclub, which would be his fourth assault charge in five years and almost surely lead to a suspension ? Marques Colston (thumb) played Sunday for the first time since Week 1, but admitted afterward that he was benched early due to ineffectiveness ? Baltimore held Miami's vaunted Wildcat formation to 24 yards on seven snaps Sunday and Ronnie Brown turned in his first true clunker game since Week 1 ? His suit wearing on the sidelines will be missed, but the 49ers let coach Mike Nolan go Monday because he made more enemies than strides defensively while compiling an 18-37 record ? Coach Jon Gruden said Monday that even if he's healthy Joey Galloway (foot) won't reclaim the starting split end job from Antonio Bryant ? Cowboys owner Jerry Jones confirmed Monday that Pacman Jones is in an alcohol treatment center "in another part of the country."

Red Zone: According to coach Wade Phillips, Tony Romo "had trouble handling the football" on the sidelines Sunday and the status of his broken pinkie remains "similar to last week" ? Kevin Curtis (hernia) practiced Monday after the Eagles' bye and looks likely to make his season debut this week ? Coach Jim Haslett said Monday that Steven Jackson (quadriceps) "should be fine" for Week 8 after an MRI exam revealed a "slight strain" ? Prior to being fired, Nolan announced that J.T. O'Sullivan will stay the 49ers' starter and Josh Morgan has moved past Bryant Johnson on the depth chart ? Coach Tony Dungy indicated Monday that Joseph Addai (hamstring) has a chance to return this week after missing just one game ? During his Monday press conference coach Mike Holmgren called Matt Hasselbeck's (back) Week 8 status uncertain, hinting at another Seneca Wallace start despite his brutal performance Sunday night ? Carnell Williams (knee) will come off the PUP list Wednesday, with Gruden predicting that he "has a chance to be ready to go quickly" ? Hines Ward's vicious crackback block Sunday broke Keith Rivers' jaw and landed the first-round rookie on injured reserve Monday.

The Replacements
This week's waiver wire brings a list of replacements that would make Paul Westerberg proud. The Vikings were forced to turn to Gus Frerotte when Tarvaris Jackson fell on his face, and the Browns will be facing the same decision this week with Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson. The Bucs, having made the change two weeks ago, are looking to Jeff Garcia to save their season in relief of Brian Griese. www.tampabaybuccaneers.ws

At running back, Cedric Benson has unseated the pedestrian Chris Perry while Pierre Thomas will look to fill in for Reggie Bush. Sammy Morris' knee injury may have the Pats turning to LaMont Jordan or even undrafted rookie Benjarvus Green-Ellis. A pair of talented rookie wide receivers, Donnie Avery and Josh Morgan, have dethroned veteran starters while Antonio Bryant has replaced Joey Galloway as the Bucs No. 1 receiver at split end. This week's bevy of replacements is your chance to capitalize on the changing times.

On to the waiver wire, where we'll emphasize replacement solutions for the next couple of weeks. Here's how I rank the likely targets at each position. Full writeups of each player are below

QUARTERBACKS

Jeff Garcia, Buccaneers - Still owned in just a third of all fantasy leagues even after leading the Bucs to back-to-back victories, Garcia is easily the best quarterback option available this week. It's time for owners of Carson Palmer, Derek Anderson, Marc Bulger, and J.T. O'Sullivan to grab Garcia instead. www.tampabaybuccaneers.ws

Recommendation: Should be owned in 12-team leagues

Gus Frerotte, Vikings - The Vikes have a bye this week, and Frerotte has been underwhelming as an NFL quarterback. So why is he an attractive waiver option? Well, he's shown consistency by throwing for over 200 yards in every game he's started, and he's knocking on the door to 300 yards in each of the past two games. You could do worse for a backup quarterback. www.minnesotavikings.ws

Recommendation: Should be owned in 12-team leagues

Brady Quinn, Browns - The Redskins have a fantastic pass defense, but even the stoutest of defenses shouldn't be holding a quarterback to a 14-of-37 performance. We all gave Derek Anderson credit for turning his season around with a sterling showing against the Giants last week, but his inaccuracy and inconsistency are truly disturbing. www.clevelandbrowns.ws

I jumped the gun on Quinn a few weeks ago when word was coming out of the Browns front office that a change was being considered. It turned out that Romeo Crennel wasn't ready to close the books on the Derek Anderson era, but Anderson may be forcing his hand this time around. Consider him Dead Man Walking once again.

Recommendation: Worth a stash in 12-team leagues

Damon Huard, Chiefs - The journeyman can put up an acceptable performance from time-to-time by utilizing Tony Gonzalez and Dwayne Bowe, but he mixes in some stinkers along the way. www.kansascitychiefs.ws

Huard was knocked out of Sunday's game in the fourth quarter with a right thumb injury, so check his status before wasting a waiver selection on him. You certainly don't want Tyler Thigpen on your roster.

Recommendation: Monitor as a possible bye week fill-in

Dan Orlovsky, Lions - Desperate owners can once again hope for a couple of prayers from Orlovsky to Calvin Johnson, but a disastrous performance is just as likely. I have Orlovsky listed here only for those who have no where else to turn; everyone else should pass on him.
www.detroitlions.ws
Recommendation: Pass

<!--RW-->

RUNNING BACKS

Cedric Benson, Bengals - The Bengals offense has fallen far from their fantasy feast days, but Benson is a starting running back in the NFL. That gives him value in fantasy leagues, especially if he continues to run with the power and burst he showed against a dominant Steelers run defense. Just ask Troy Polamalu, who suffered a concussion while trying to tackle Benson.

Don't expect eye-popping numbers from the former first-round bust, but do expect an improvement on Chris Perry.

Recommendation: Should be owned in all leagues

LaMont Jordan, Patriots - We don't know the severity of Sammy Morris' knee injury, nor do we know if Jordan will be able to return from his own calf injury this week. However, if Morris' injury is serious, Jordan is the better pick for the second half of the season than Benjarvus Green-Ellis. Not only is Jordan more likely to have a string of starts, he's also in line to carve out a role even if Morris' injury is merely a tweak.

Recommendation: Should be owned in 12-team leagues

Ahman Green, Texans - Green's virtual rotation with rookie Steve Slaton is what the Texans were dreaming of coming into the season. The veteran is worth owning for the rest of the season, but keep in mind he has a one-week window against the Bengals before the brutal run defenses of the Vikings and Ravens in Week 9 and 10.

Recommendation: Worth a look in 12-team leagues

Pierre Thomas, Saints - With Reggie Bush out for a month, there's an opportunity for free fantasy points in the Saints backfield. Unfortunately, the uncertainty in production makes for a relatively unexciting waiver pickup. After Deuce McAllister, it looks like a frustrating mixture of both Pierre Thomas and reliable vet Aaron Stecker. Grab Thomas, but don't be surprised if Stecker stays involved enough to be a true annoyance.

Recommendation: Worth a look in 12-team leagues

Fred Jackson, Bills - Jackson is not a back to rely on, but as a good bet for 50 yards in any given week you could do worse for an emergency replacement. He's on pace for almost 1,000 combined yards this season and makes for fine RB4. www.buffalobills.ws

Recommendation: Worth a look in 12-team leagues

Benjarvus Green-Ellis, Patriots - Keep your ear to the ground in New England this week. Injury updates are hard to come by with Bill Belichick, but we should at least get an opportunity to read the tea leaves from practice reports. If neither Sammy Morris nor LaMont Jordan can go in Week 8, Green-Ellis would take on a major role against the Rams.

Recommendation: Worth a look in deeper leagues

Maurice Morris, Seahawks - Morris has earned a share of the committee work in Seattle, but he's not going to be a starting option as long as Julius Jones is receiving half of the carries.

Recommendation: Worth a look in deeper leagues

WIDE RECEIVERS

Antonio Bryant, Buccaneers - You've heard it before: change happens quickly in the NFL. I recommended the White Tiger, Joey Galloway, last week, but Antonio Bryant bounced back with a huge performance Sunday night. www.tampabaybuccaneers.ws

Following the game, Jon Gruden informed Galloway that Bryant had taken over as the team's No. 1 receiver. Galloway will return as the flanker rather than the fantasy friendly split end. Go ahead and grab Bryant if he was dropped in your league.

Recommendation: Should be owned in all leagues

Kevin Curtis, Eagles - Curtis participated in Monday's practice and is on target to play a significant role this week against the Falcons. Philly has a better passing offense this year than last, so Curtis will return to a productive environment for the second half of the season. It's a good idea to wait a week before starting him, but he's definitely worth a spot on your roster.

Recommendation: Should be owned in all leagues

Josh Morgan, 49ers - We caught a glimpse of Morgan's playmaking ability in preseason action before a staff infection put him behind the 8-ball to begin the season. Now healthy and starting, Morgan is a possible game-changer in the 49ers' pass happy attack. He's a mandatory pickup for Dynasty leaguers, but redrafters will want to get in on his high ceiling as well.

Recommendation: Should be owned in all leagues

Donnie Avery, Rams - The rookie speedster is becoming a problem for opposing defenses, evidenced by his performance against the Cowboys in Week 7. Avery hauled in one long touchdown pass and almost scored on two other plays. He now has a touchdown or at least 70 receiving yards in each of the past three games.

Recommendation: Should be owned in all leagues

Greg Camarillo, Dolphins - Camarillo has been a fine WR3 for most of the season and is a must-add for those in points per reception leagues. He's emerged as Chad Pennington's favorite target and should continue to see five or six receptions for 50+ yards on a weekly basis. www.miamidolphins.ws

Recommendation: Should be owned in PPR leagues

Malcom Floyd, Chargers - Floyd is a worthwhile WR3 for as long as Chris Chambers remains out with a sprained ankle. Chambers didn't practice at all in Week 7, so he's going to be questionable at best for the Wembley Stadium matchup against the Saints this week. www.sandiegochargers.ws

Recommendation: Worth a look in 12-team leagues

Antwaan Randle El, Redskins - If you're in a bind and need a one-week option, you could do worse than Randle El against the Lions in Week 8. He's a better bet in PPR leagues as he's gone for at least four receptions in five out of seven games. www.washingtonredskins.ws

Recommendation: Worth a look in deeper leagues

Marty Booker, Bears - With Kyle Orton playing out of his mind the past month, random Bears receivers are putting up legit fantasy numbers from week-to-week. This week was Booker's turn, and it could stay that way with injuries to Devin Hester and Brandon Lloyd.

Booker showed good wheels on his touchdown scamper Sunday, and he dropped two more sure touchdowns along the way. The Bears have a Week 8 bye, but Booker is a good bet for heavy targets and solid production against the Lions the following week if Hester remains sidelined by a quad injury.

Recommendation: Worth a look in deeper leagues

Mike Furrey, Lions - Calvin Johnson draws the lion's share of defensive attention (no pun intended), and Furrey took advantage of it on underneath routes in Week 7. Keep in mind, however, that Shaun McDonald is involved as well. Both receivers will be hampered by the poor passing of Dan Orlovsky, so keep expectations low. www.detroitlions.ws

Recommendation: Worth a look in deeper leagues

TIGHT ENDS

Bo Scaife, Texans - Behold the power of the tight end screen pass. The Titans have made the play a staple of their offense, and Scaife is benefiting with a career season thus far. Expect an inconsistent TE2 going forward.

Recommendation: Worth a look in 12-team leagues

Visanthe Shiancoe, Vikings - We all recognize that Gus Frerotte has bestowed relevance upon Bernard Berrian, but Shiancoe has Frerotte to thank as well. It's hard to believe, but the burly tight end with questionable hands has racked up 35+ yards and a touchdown in three of his last five games. www.minnesotavikings.ws

Recommendation: Worth a look as a bye week fill-in

DEFENSES
Jets ? If the Chiefs are forced to start the human turnover machine known as Tyler Thigpen, the Jets will move to the top of the line among fantasy defenses for Week 8. Get on board.

Re: Fantasy Football News 2008

Re: Fantasy Football News 2008

Fantasy roundup: Keep Turner on the sidelines in Week 8

Big name players you should strongly consider benching in Week 8.
Michael Turner at Philadelphia: The Falcons running back has consistently come up short against tougher opponents, averaging 50.7 rushing yards a game with zero touchdowns versus Carolina, Chicago, and Tampa Bay. The Eagles enter Sunday's tilt holding opposing running backs to 83.1 rushing yards per contest, allowing just three rushing TDs on the season. Clinton Portis and Frank Gore both hit the century mark against the Philadelphia defense in Weeks 5 and 6, so you can bet it will be motivated to keep Turner in check. If you don't want to get burned, keep Turner on your bench.
Kurt Warner at Carolina Panthers: We saw what Carolina did to league's top passer, Drew Brees, last week. And it's fair to say the Arizona Cardinals quarterback isn't at the same level as his New Orleans Saints' counterpart. The Panthers have held opposing QBs to 168.7 passing yards a game and five touchdowns this season. Warner, coincidentally, has played some of the worst football of his career against Carolina, with an 8-to-12 touchdown-interception ratio and just 201 passing yards a game in six career matchups. Carolina has also sacked him eight times over that span, forcing him to fumble twice. Keep Warner in reserve, and look forward to his matchup against the St. Louis Rams in Week 9.

Marvin Harrison at Tennessee Titans: Tales of the Indianapolis Colts veteran receiver's decline have been greatly exaggerated, but there is no doubt that he has lost a step. .. or two. Tennessee also hasn't allowed a single touchdown to opposing wide receivers this season, rendering Harrison's prospects for production grim at best. The Titans front seven should be able to contain the Colts on the ground, leaving shutdown corner Cortland Finnegan and Co. free to shadow Peyton Manning's primary targets. With Anthony Gonzalez and Dallas Clark emerging as Manning's secondary options, Harrison will look very much like an afterthought Monday night.
Darren McFadden at Baltimore Ravens: The Ravens rush defense has been the best in the business in 2008, giving up 58.5 rushing yards a game and allowing one rushing score to opposing running backs. Its 2.8 yards-a-carry allowed is also tops among NFL defenses. Ronnie Brown, Chris Johnson, and Jamal Lewis couldn't get it done against Baltimore; it's highly doubtful that the Oakland Raiders rookie running back, who averages 12.8 touches a game, will either.

Rookie Avery, Rams showing some life
St. Louis Rams rookie wide receiver Donnie Avery took advantage of an undermanned Dallas Cowboys secondary with five catches, 65 yards and a 42-yard touchdown in Week 7.
He has at least four catches and 65 yards and a catch of over 40 yards in each of his last two games.
Avery has seemingly emerged as the No. 2 wideout in a resurgent Rams Offense while helping St. Louis open up the deep passing game. The team might have found a reliable complement to veteran Torry Holt.
The speedster is available in roughly 87% of leagues polled on major websites.

Morgan finally getting an opportunity
San Francisco 49ers receiver Josh Morgan lit up the stat column during the preseason but disappeared once the regular season started, giving way to Bryant Johnson.
After catching no more than two balls for 25 yards in any game this season, Morgan started in Week 7 and hauled in five passes for 86 yards and a touchdown against a stingy New York Giants Defense.
The schedule looks favorable to Morgan and the 49ers. First, they face the slumping Seattle Seahawks. Following their Week 9 bye, they battle the Arizona Cardinals, St. Louis Rams and Dallas Cowboys ? all of which are in the bottom half of the NFL in pass defense.
Fantasy owners should take Morgan seriously and grab him quick.

If you're contemplating benching Peyton, forget about it
Fantasy owners who spent a first-round pick on Peyton Manning are mulling a question they never imagined: Do I sit the Indianapolis Colts quarterback?
Manning has fewer touchdown passes than Chicago Bears QBKyle Orton and the same number (eight) as San Francisco 49ers turnover machine J.T. O'Sullivan. With the Colts facing three of the top 10 defenses against the pass in the Pittsburgh Steelers, New England Patriots and Tennessee Titans in the next few weeks, there is one thing to do: Keep Manning in your lineup.
This is Peyton Manning we're talking about. You would have thought that the game against the top-ranked Baltimore Ravens Defense might be the occasion to sit Manning. That was his best game of the season, with 271 yards and three touchdowns. Manning has thrown 30-plus touchdowns in each of the past two years and is someone you start regardless of matchup. He's never missed a start in his career and has never had fewer than 26 touchdown passes. He is the definition of consistency, which is what you always want to have.

Delhomme heating up, and upcoming schedule is favorable
Owners looking to make a quarterback switch should take a close look at the Carolina Panthers' Jake Delhomme. After a slow start that saw him throw as many interceptions as touchdowns (five) in his first six games, Delhomme has heated up, throwing for nearly 200 yards and two touchdowns last week against the New Orleans Saints.
Expect solid production over his next four starts as he faces no defense ranked higher than 20th against the pass. His best weapon, WR Steve Smith, will be instrumental. Smith has increased his yardage each game since his return from a suspension. In his last four games, Smith has 24 catches while averaging more than 100 yards a game.

Running Over the Chiefs
As a fellow fatso it was highly amusing to see LenDale White rumble 80 yards for his third touchdown Sunday against the sieve-like Chiefs and coach Jeff Fisher's postgame explanation of the momentous event added to the fun. He noted the obvious by saying that "no one thought LenDale was a step away from going the distance" before opining that "he must have had a salad for dinner last night." www.tennesseetitan.ws

White had 427 career carries coming into Sunday's game, yet none had gone for more than 28 yards. He also had a total of just 165 yards on 63 carries through five games this season, which worked out to a miserable 2.6-yard average. That all changed thanks to the Chiefs, who gave up 149 yards and three touchdowns to my main man Plumpy and another 168 yards to backfield mate Chris Johnson.

Kansas City has now surrendered an astoundingly awful 5.6 yards per carry and 207.2 yards per game on the ground this season. That per-carry average ranks worst in the league by 10 percent and that per-game average is the NFL's worst by 24 percent. Over the past two games alone the Chiefs have coughed up 537 rushing yards, which is more than six teams have allowed all season. Seriously.

Thomas Jones is the lucky guy who gets to have a monster game versus Kansas City this week, and he warmed up for the occasion by going off for 159 yards on 24 carries Sunday against Oakland. He's normally a pretty standard RB2 option, but for this week at least Jones is no worse than the eighth-best runner and Leon Washington may even be able to top 30 rushing yards for the first time this year. www.newyorkjets.ws

While White devotes this week to catching his breath, here are some other notes from around football ?

* Tony Romo admitted Tuesday that his broken pinkie finger likely hasn't healed enough for him to return this week versus Tampa Bay. Dallas has a Week 9 bye, so Romo will get three weeks to rest the injury that was initially expected to keep him out for 2-4 weeks. In the meantime, Brad Johnson will start against the Bucs' dominant defense after looking absolutely awful against the lowly Rams.

Johnson went just 6-of-18 in the first half before padding his numbers late after the Cowboys were behind big, throwing three interceptions and another few balls that easily could have been picked off. Tampa Bay intercepted Jake Delhomme three times two weeks ago, absolutely overwhelmed Seneca Wallace last week, and has allowed a measly 67.8 quarterback rating overall this season.

Not only is Johnson a bad QB2 option, his inability to stretch the field and likely struggles against the Bucs drag Terrell Owens down into low-level WR2 territory and make Roy Williams virtually unplayable. Jason Witten should be able to post solid numbers via plenty of short targets over the middle and Marion Barber has a chance for a huge workload if Dallas can have some success on the ground.

* Kellen Winslow rejoined the lineup Sunday and was targeted 10 times, but then ranted Monday against coach Romeo Crennel and general manager Phil Savage for treating him like "a piece of meat" while he was the latest Browns player to be hospitalized with a staph infection. Crennel immediately scolded Winslow for his public comments and the Browns handed him a one-game suspension Tuesday. www.clevelandbrowns.ws

Winslow will sit out versus Jacksonville, which is a shame because his workload Sunday was encouraging and the Jaguars have struggled to cover tight ends this season. Steve Heiden will start in his place after totaling 59 yards on five grabs in Week 6, and makes for a nice TE2 option. Meanwhile, several reliable reports suggest that the Browns were trying to deal Winslow before last week's deadline.

Two-Minute Drill: Kansas City reportedly gave Daunte Culpepper a call Monday, but it doesn't look like he'll be removing the large fork from his back to come out of retirement ? Coach Mike McCarthy said Monday that Ryan Grant's fumbling "needs to stop" after he coughed a ball up in Week 7 for the third time this year, but he's in no danger of losing significant carries ? In a statement that will no doubt get him fined by the league, Terrell Suggs said Tuesday that the Ravens have a bounty out on Hines Ward this week ? Meanwhile, Ward wasn't fined for the vicious block that broke Keith Rivers' jaw and ended his season ? According to coach Gary Kubiak, the Texans were able to get Andre Johnson 30 grabs over in past three games by "moving him around a lot" in formations "because people will game plan him if we leave him in one spot" ? Michael Vick is soon expected to plead guilty to state dog-fighting charges, which apparently would then qualify him for an early release from federal prison.

Red Zone: Brian Westbrook (ribs, ankle) was limited in practice Monday after the Eagles' bye week, but said during a radio interview that he's "on track" to return Sunday against the Falcons ? Despite saying Sunday night that he may not play in Week 8 because he's "just not healthy," Jeremy Shockey (groin) traveled with the Saints to London for their matchup with the Chargers ? Coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday that Willie Parker (knee) should resume practicing later this week, but even if healthy enough to play Sunday he'll probably lose significant touches to impressive fill-in Mewelde Moore ? Anquan Boldin indicated Tuesday that he plans to return this week, but he'll need to be medically cleared first after having his lower jaw wired into place and eight plates inserted into his face following an ugly helmet-to-helmet hit last month ? Coach Jeff Fisher said Tuesday that he's hopeful Justin Gage (knee) will be able to resume practicing later this week and potentially suit up against the Colts ? Rodney Harrison's season-ending and career-threatening torn quadriceps muscle Monday night has led to speculation that the Patriots may re-sign John Lynch.

Week 8 Rankings
As all of New England understandably freaks out about Tom Brady's never-ending knee surgeries, there is one source of optimism: the remarkable recoveries of a trio of players who underwent ACL surgeries last season. Philip Rivers, Ronnie Brown, and Deuce McAllister are playing like their procedures never happened.

Rivers was practicing in August and is playing the best football of his career. He leads the NFL in touchdown passes, and his accuracy has not been compromised. His deep ball somehow looks better. Ronnie Brown is cutting up a storm on his surgically repaired knee and ranks in the top-ten fantasy backs. He was never a great speed threat, but he still makes the first tackler miss as well as any back in the league. McAllister's story is the most remarkable. He's returned to prominence at 29 years old after a second ACL surgery and microfracture surgery on his other knee. The flash is gone from his game, but he presses a hole quickly and is tough to take down. He'll be a useful RB2 option while Reggie Bush is out.

Brady's case, of course, is complicated by his subsequent problems with infection. I'm not smart enough to comment knowledgeably on the situation, but another potential reconstruction sure sounds devastating. What we know from Brown, Rivers, and McAllister is that one reconstructive knee surgery doesn't appear to be the automatic fantasy downer it once was. At least that's what Brady's keeper league owners can quietly mumble to themselves as memories of his 50 touchdowns recede further in the rearview mirror.

QB Notes: Weird week. A lot of top quarterbacks are facing the best pass defenses. Peyton Manning has the Titans, who have given up one touchdown pass all season. One! A few weeks ago, I was filled with an unhealthy amount of self-loathing after ranking Manning as a QB2 because of a tough matchup again Baltimore. He's not quite that low this time around, but he can be benched for players like Jason Campbell and Trent Edwards with better matchups. Fear for the Colts offensive line against Albert Haynesworth. We'll see if I'm hating myself again Monday Morning.

Other top quarterbacks with tough matchups: Kurt Warner faces a stingy Panther pass defense that shut down Drew Brees. Carolina is second in the league in yards-per-game allowed and yards-per-attempt allowed. With an improved pass rush to help out, Carolina's cornerback trio of Chris Gamble, Ken Lucas, and Richard Marshall matches up well with any group in the league. This will be a good test to see if the Cardinals can still be the Cardinals in the Eastern time zone. ? Eli Manning and Ben Roethlisberger face of in Pittsburgh. Don't expect a repeat of the 33-30 game the two teams had in 2004. Ben is the better fantasy play because the Giants are more vulnerable through the air. The trick will be protecting him. For all the talk of Eli's development, his fantasy stats are remarkably similar to how they look every season, minus some interceptions. The Steelers lead the league in passing yards-per-game allowed, so he's a shaky play.

Another reason to believe Matt Schaub will remain a top-eight fantasy quarterback the rest of the season; Gary Kubiak loves throwing in the red zone. Schaub is first in the league in red zone pass attempts despite starting only five games. He's fourth in goal line attempts. Other quarterbacks who rank high on both lists: Kurt Warner, Jay Cutler, and Donovan McNabb. ? J.T. O'Sullivan is the ultimate quarterback that can be better in fantasy than reality. He still ranks in the top ten in YPA and passing yards despite playing the Eagles and Giants the last two weeks. He lit up Seattle last time and their defense is in worse shape now. I'd play him with confidence.

I can't remember having this tough a week ranking people, probably because all the poor quarterbacks have good matchups. There is very little separation between spots #9-20. When push comes to shove, I still go with the better player over the better matchup if it's a toss up. The players from Delhomme to Bulger was especially hard to separate. Garrard is starting to play better, and I believe in him more than the others. The Cowboys are now a plus or neutral matchup, but I think their defense will be fired up to improve. I'm not fully buying the Jeff Garcia revival yet, although he's a decent QB2. It's hard to say if the Cardinals are a good or bad matchup, although their defense has not been the same on the road. Jake Delhomme is relatively steady, but unspectacular, against average defenses. The Panthers run a lot in the red zone. Delhomme is 26th in the NFL since Week 2 in red zone pass attempts. ? Anderson could get benched if he struggles, so his "upside" probably isn't worth it. Bulger doesn't produce even when the Rams when. ? The Colts are somehow first in the league at preventing fantasy points to quarterbacks, so stay away from Kerry Collins. ? Matt Ryan grows more impressive by the week, but I don't like his chances on the road against a Jim Johnson defense. Expect a good "lesson" game by Ryan.

RB Notes: Mike Tomlin said it earlier in the week: The Giants offensive line is as good as any offensive line in recent history. Couldn't agree more. Eli Manning doesn't get touched in the passing game, but their run blocking takes it to another level. Consider this: Brandon Jacobs is on pace for over 1,300 yards and 16 touchdowns. His backup, Derrick Ward, is on pace for 1,200 total yards! Including Ahmad Bradshaw, the Giants backfield is on pace for over 3,000 yards from scrimmage this year. The schedule gets much tougher down the stretch, starting this week against the Steelers. I can't imagine benching Jacobs in any format, but Ward isn't a great flex play because of the tough matchup. ? Ryan Grant ran harder last week against Indy, but the results were still not great. After getting 64 carries in two weeks, Grant is at risk of breaking down. It's a great time to sell while you can.

The Colts struggled to push the Packers up front, which doesn't bode well for their matchup with the Titans. Most of Dominic Rhodes' yards came when the Colts went four wide and delayed a handoff. Translation: The Colts just can't gain rushing yards by blocking people hat on hat. Joseph Addai has an outside chance to play this week, but avoid waiting for the Colts backs if possible. ? It feels strange to defend Jamal Lewis, who has been a punch line in this space in previous years. But he's actually playing better than his numbers would indicate the last two weeks. The passing game is limiting his scoring chances, but he still has great vision and is finding holes. Stick with him against the Jaguars. ? It looks like Steven Jackson will play this week. Monday Night's game notwithstanding, the Patriots rush defense is average. Start him. ? Brian Westbrook is fully practicing again, making Correll Buckhalter a useful fantasy reserve. ? Julius Jones' dustup with Mike Holmgren may not help his chances of fending off a Maurice Morris committee.

Justin Fargas is clearly Tom Cable's guy. Oakland has a tough matchup against Baltimore, so Fargas and Darren McFadden should both be on fantasy benches. McFadden has topped 50 rushing yards once all season and is now getting only 8-10 carries a game. Frank Gore's offensive line is absolutely terrible, especially when facing a physical defense. Luckily, they get the lightweight Seahawks this week. The Saints' run blocking has improved throughout the year. They have opened up some big holes for Deuce McAllister the last two weeks and he's responded with decisive cuts and a yards-per-carry average over five. The Chargers are no longer a tough matchup, making McAllister a decent bet to score. He's a solid RB2 for the week. Aaron Stecker and Pierre Thomas should get involved behind him, but it's uncertain who will be the backup.

I continue to rank Jonathan Stewart ahead of DeAngelo Williams because he's more likely to score. Stewart owners hoping that he'll eventually take over are going to be disappointed though. The Panthers backs complement each other well and share snaps on nearly every drive. It's working for John Fox and he's unlikely to change his strategy. ? LenDale White is actually running worse than last season, but playing on the rejuvenated Titans has it's perks. Jeff Fisher loves using him near the goal line, much to the consternation of Chris Johnson owners. It's hard to sit the NFL leader in rushing touchdowns, especially against the Colts, who are softer than White's midsection. ? Michael Turner and Ronnie Brown have been inconsistent and face tough matchups, but there just aren't overly reliable options to rank in front of them this week.

Sammy Morris is ranked as if he'll start. That's far from certain to happen. If Morris is out, a healthy LaMont Jordan would climb into the top-25. BenJarvus Green-Ellis figures to be third on the depth chart at best. ? Ahman Green and Cedric Benson are both sneaky plays this week because of the matchup. We said to start Green as a flex against the Lions last week and it's fair to expect a similar performance against Cincy, one of the worst rush defenses in the league. Benson may not look great, but he should get 15-20 touches in a plus matchup. ? Earnest Graham owners should keep an eye on Warrick Dunn's status. ? Jamaal Charles will come off the bench, but he's got a better chance than Kolby Smith to break a big play against a shockingly stout Jets rush defense.

Re: Fantasy Football News 2008

Benjarvus to the Rescue?
My plan was to lead today's column with an update on the saga surrounding Tom Brady's surgically repaired knee, which took an unexpectedly odd turn Thursday. However, so many new details and rumors emerged that doing the story justice in a few paragraphs here would be impossible. Plus, the boys at the Rotoworld player news page have done an amazing job tracking every piece of the story.

While you head over to Brady's constantly updated player page to get caught up on the latest drama with his knee, here are some notes from around football ?

* Sammy Morris was held out of Thursday's practice and Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that he's expected to miss 2-4 weeks with an undisclosed knee injury. Unfortunately for the Patriots, LaMont Jordan's calf injury also forced him to sit out Thursday's session and he looks unlikely to be available Sunday versus the Rams.

Not so long ago the Patriots had one of football's deepest backfields, but injuries to Morris, Jordan, and Laurence Maroney will seemingly leave them with veteran third-down back Kevin Faulk and undrafted rookie Benjarvus Green-Ellis splitting the Week 8 workload. Fullback Heath Evans may even find himself in the mix out of sheer necessity.

Jordan missing the game would likely give Green-Ellis the start and at least half the carries, but Faulk would also get plenty of carries along with all the receiving chances. BGE would be a decent RB3/FLEX option and Faulk would hold similar value in PPR leagues. As for Morris, he's worth holding onto through the injury, because if healthy he'll likely return to a spot atop the depth chart in 2-4 weeks.

* It took Edgerrin James nearly half the season to start complaining about losing snaps to rookie Tim Hightower, but the inevitable finally happened Thursday as he expressed frustration. "I don't want to just be on a team, I like to play," James said. "If I'm not playing, it's not serving a purpose. What purpose is it serving? I don't want to feel like I'm selfish, but you want to play." www.arizonacardinals.ws

Based on James' comments you'd think that he was a seldom-used backup, but in reality he has 101 carries compared to 43 for Hightower and has averaged 19 touches per game. He's right to feel like the Cardinals are phasing him out?and they should be, because he's managed just 3.7 yards per carry in three seasons with the team, including a measly 3.6-yard average this year.

However, the process has been far more gradual than James makes it seem and there's no indication that Hightower is on the verge of claiming the starting job or even a true workload split. James is on pace for 300 touches, so being a shell of his former self is a far bigger issue than playing time. That's likely to change next season, but for now Hightower is mostly just a short-yardage back with upside.

* Steven Jackson couldn't practice Thursday because of the quadriceps injury he suffered late in last week's win over the Cowboys, but doing some conditioning work on the side was enough to convince coach Jim Haslett that "he looks better to me." Haslett added that "it's up to him whether he feels good enough to play," suggesting that he'll likely be a game-time decision against the Patriots.

Jackson was fantastic against the Cowboys, totaling 160 yards and three scores on 25 carries, but the Patriots have been pretty solid against the run even while their secondary falls apart. Jackson would be a mid-level RB1 option if he starts, so you'll definitely need to check and double-check his status leading up to game time, but backup Antonio Pittman would be merely a RB3/FLEX play in his place.

* The bad news for the Jets is that it looks like injuries may sideline both Jerricho Cotchery and Laveranues Coles this week, leaving Brett Favre minus his favorite targets after they combined to haul in 43 percent of his completions thus far. The good news for the Jets is that if you're going to be without both starting receivers for one game it might as well come against the Chiefs. www.newyorkjets.ws

As discussed in this space a few days ago, Thomas Jones should slice through Kansas City's rotten defense like so many backs have this year and Favre likely won't have to do much in an easy win. Cotchery may be a game-time call with a shoulder injury, but Coles will likely sit after suffering a concussion last week. Either way, expect under 30 throws from Favre for the first time since Week 2.

Two-Minute Drill: Kellen Winslow's suspension appeal won't be heard until next week, so he'll be unavailable versus the Jaguars while Steve Heiden starts in his place ? Plugged-in Lions beat reporter Tom Kowalski suggested Thursday that he'd be "very surprised" if Kevin Smith doesn't soon begin getting the bulk of the carries over current "starter" Rudi Johnson ? Offensive coordinator Mike Martz gave J.T. O'Sullivan a vote of confidence Thursday, blaming his recent struggles on a "learning curve" and noting that "it's not an issue at all" ? Coach Andy Reid said Thursday that DeSean Jackson will keep starting at flanker alongside Kevin Curtis even once Reggie Brown (groin) gets back ? Daunte Culpepper officially unretired via e-mail Thursday and may latch on somewhere as a backup, but has almost zero chance of being a fantasy asset ? Once projected as a first-round pick before eventually going in the sixth round, Andre Woodson was cut from the Giants' practice squad Thursday ? Contrary to popular belief and my status as a lifelong Minnesotan, this is not me.

Red Zone: Willie Parker was added to the Steelers' participation report Thursday with a knee injury, signaling an apparent setback that may put his return in doubt if he can't practice Friday ? Anquan Boldin (jaw) looks likely to return this week after being medically cleared and practicing on back-to-back days, but probably shouldn't be counted on as more than a low-level WR2 ? Plaxico Burress was briefly hospitalized Thursday with neck soreness, putting his Week 8 status up in the air ? After watching Jeremy Shockey (groin) practice Thursday, coach Sean Payton said that he "looked good" ? Willis McGahee (knee) put in a full practice Thursday, so he'll start against the Raiders ? Deion Branch (heel) is unlikely to return this week after slipping back-to-back workouts ? Carnell Williams (knee) practiced Thursday, but still hasn't been removed from the PUP list and added to the 53-man roster ? Justin Gage (knee) practiced fully Thursday and looks likely to return this week ? Brian Westbrook (ribs) is a near-lock to return this week after practicing fully Thursday ? As expected, Tony Romo (finger) wasn't able to practice Thursday and remains unlikely to return before Week 11.

Re: Fantasy Football News 2008

Halfway House

Call me Pandora. When I offered to answer start/bench/trade questions in last week's column, I didn't know anyone was, you know, actually reading. I was both flattered and overwhelmed, subsequently receiving ? no joke -- about150 emails between Friday and Sunday as we enjoyed a fall New Hampshire lake weekend. While carving pumpkins and trying to prevent my daughter from eating the seedy goo-stuff, I found myself wondering, "Hmm, did I give the right advice to Ryan in Tuscon? Should he really start Moss over Holt, even with Cassel at QB and Holt playing the weak Dallas secondary? Yeah, he should start Moss. Definitely. I think." And that's when I realized I'd lopped off my thumb along with a couple of the pumpkin's teeth.

But as promised, I answered everyone and have since received dozens of "thanks, man" emails for advice that fortunately led to wins . . . along with the requisite "Nice call on Cutler over Schaub, jackass!" notes from pissed off guys who lost. Hey, I never claimed to be a warlock who can predict when the league's second-most potent passing offense will tank against a crappy pass defense. Like many, I'm right a lot of the time, not all the time. I'm just a man, dammit! To quote the chocolate Skittles Pinata Man, "I'm just like everyone else!"

But to prevent my needing Red Bull and amphetamines to handle your mid-season lineup/trade queries, here are a few ground rules:

I don't want your league user names/passwords to evaluate rosters and suggest trades. Do your homework and then come to me with possible deals. Plus, it'd be too tempting for me to infiltrate the first-place team and drop Cutler, MBIII, Marshall, Jennings and Witten into the free agent pool like chicken carcasses into a piranha tank and watch the ensuing chaos. And I can't moderate ongoing talks between you and your trade partner as if we're Stalin, Churchill and Roosevelt at Yalta. I'll weigh in on your potential deal and then I'm out.

Whenever possible, I'll give some reasoning behind my recommending one player vs. another (vs. just saying "start McGahee"). But I can't over-analyze day/night/grass/turf splits, potential Week 14-16 weather conditions, player astrological signs and other details which might help you decide.

I will not come film you and your significant other "doing it." I realize that we'd all make a little extra cash, which would be great in these tough economic times, but I also think that this would lead to a prison stretch and/or one of us dying a mysterious Bob Crane death. Plus, motel bedspreads are too itchy.

I will answer to the best of my ability and knowledge because I honestly want you to win.

I will not be your Facebook friend because that honestly creeps me out.

Anyway, as we approach the season's midpoint, here are your Risers and Fallers?

RISERS

Ryan Grant: Last week I wrote: "Watch him get 90 yards or so and a TD against the Colts and then deal him . . .." Okay, I was wrong -- he had 105 yards and a TD. But I maintain that he's a prime sell-high because those 105 yards took 31 carries? against a not-so-good IND rush defense, no less. And, he's been fumbling. A reader named Doug emailed me about an offer he received after Sunday's games: T.O. for his Ryan Grant. That's the epitome of buy low/sell high, folks. If you're offered T.O., Colston, Jennings, Marshall, Boldin, Fitzgerald or another stud in a Grant package -- even Randy Moss is good value if he'd be your WR2/3 -- run, don't walk, to your local Worldwide Web Caf? and make that deal.

Antonio Bryant: Watching him manhandle the 'Hawks secondary, Bryant reminded me of David Boston in his short-lived prime . . . before all those hormones or whatever the hell Boston was shooting made it impossible for his knees to support the extra 700-pounds of freakish rhinoceros cartilage/body armor that grew over his torso. Bryant's the go-to for Garcia and will continue to start/be the WR1 even with Galloway back. That said, if you can capitalize on his big MNF game and package him with a low-end RB for a more proven option like Boldin or Plaxico, do it.

<!--RW-->

Mewelde Moore: A strong game in relief of Parker last week, and now it looks as like Willie will miss Sunday's tilt versus NYG. Not a great match-up for Mewelde but the longer Willie is on the shelf, the higher Moore's value obviously rises. If he was just a waiver pickup and you're set at RB, see if you can deal him to the FWP owner.

Jeff Garcia: This guy's gotta have skin thicker than David Boston's brontosaurus hide. First, he comes off the bench and leads the Eagles to the '06 playoffs, but Tampa only signs him after they don't sign soon-retired Jake Plummer. Then he leads Tampa to the '07 playoffs, only to have Gruden flirt with Brett Favre more clumsily than a 48-year-old father of three driving the babysitter home. Then after Favre spurns Gruden, Garcia starts and almost upsets the Saints on the road in the '08 opener, but then gets benched for the immortal Brian Griese, only getting the job back when Griese gets hurt. Meanwhile, all he does is put up borderline fantasy starter/solid backup numbers, which are bound to stay up against a decimated DAL secondary.

MJD: Even Fred Taylor has admitted that change is a'comin' -- MJD as lead dog for the second half. This makes his owners salivate, as does the Jags' next three weeks: CLE, @CIN, @DET, with GB and IND in Weeks 15 & 16 (fantasy semi's and finals). If you can deal LT to an owner who remembers the good ol' LT days in exchange for MJD and a WR/QB upgrade, give it a shot.

Willis McGahee: Having an entire syringe or goop drained from your knee is not only totally gross, it's a red flag. Still, Willis racked up 152 total yards against a fairly stout (#12) Miami rush defense, and would-be TD vulture Le'Ron McClain and change of pace back Ray Rice have faded into the background, leaving Willis and his semi-risky knee as the clear RB1. I'd watch him pile up numbers against three upcoming cupcakes -- OAK, CLE, HOU ? and then deal him before a bruuuutal final six-games against five of the NFL's top rush D's ? NYG, PHI, WAS, PIT, DAL (bold = fantasy playoffs = ouch).

TJ Housh/Ocho: The question was how badly would Ryan Fitzpatrick affect Chad and Housh? The answer is -- to paraphrase Derek Smalls ? none . . . none more bad. Housh is still second in the NFL in receptions (46) and third in total targets (65), so PPR owners can rest relatively easy, and Chad's appeared on the radar the past two weeks. The none-more-good part? Housh's yards and touchdowns are, and will likely stay, down with Carson out, and thanks to Fitz's peashooter arm Chad isn't the deep he used to be. Still, at least Housh's value holds when compared to how worried his owners were when Fitzy took over. I think Chad's 8 catches however, were a bit fluky as Pittsburgh gladly gave Cincy the short stuff.

Donnie Avery: He's more of a Waiver Wired kinda guy, but Avery was the first receiver taken this past draft (33rd overall) and he's showed why the past two weeks with a combined 8 catches/128 yards/TD -- would have been more had one long TD not been called back and Bulger not overthrown him on another potential 90-yarder. He's a great Flex/WR3 these days, but if you can package him with a RB/QB for a WR upgrade, feel free.

LenDale White: Guess he got fed up with the "Sizzler all-you-can-eat buffet" jokes, eh? LenDale not only rumbled for three scores, one of them was an 80-yard dash. He might have moved down the field as fast as a cold front, but he moved nonetheless and is a veritable TD machine in the Titans' efficient, run-first offense. If you want to deal him based on any "but it was against the Chiefs" worries and capitalize on his monster day, you can't be faulted. But unless you're getting a stud in return ? realistically a Gore, Jacobs, BarberIII, e.g. -- he's a hold.

Pierre Thomas/Aaron Stecker: Speculative only. If Deuce is indeed a positive 'roid test suspension -- I'm no doctor, but this might explain the rapid ACL recovery? -- Thomas becomes early down/goal line Deuce. Stecker will become pass-catching Bush as is, so both have rising values, Stecker's particularly in PPR leagues.

FALLERS

Santonio Holmes: When I saw the "Holmes cited for marijuana possession" headline, I thought "Please let it be Priest . . .please let it be Katie . . .please let it be Sherlock . . ." I mean, wouldn't it make more sense that Priest, now retired, would spend his days puffing up and watching Adult Swim, or Katie would need some "natural medicinal help" to deal with being married to a wing-nut and attending space alien church every Sunday? Versus, say, Santonio, an active player whose team is fighting for the top playoff seed and needs him to be, you know, lucid on game day? Furthermore, he was found with marijuana cigars?not wee little cigarettes but giant, baby arm-sized, Red Auerbach cigars! And now he's de-activated! Way to go, Method Man!

Drew Brees:Colston's back. Shockey's back (but unhappy...shocker). Moore's emerged as a viable Welker-esque possession/slot guy. Life's good for Brees, right? Would be, if Bush hadn't gone down. Reggie's absence will have a negative effect on Brees for sure, with that missing pass threat out of the backfield, but it's not like Brees will suddenly stop throwing. So if you want him, now's your chance to play up Bush's absence and make the Brees owner panic. If you own him, don't deal for anything less than Cutler or Rodgers and an upgrade at RB/WR, because after the weak Chargers (Cromartie possibly out) and a bye, the Saints have an equally nice second half schedule: @ATL, @KC, GB, @TB, ATL, @CHI, @DET (sweeeeet playoff stretch).

Torry Holt: Based on his start percentage across Fantasy Nation ? on average between ESPN, CBS and Yahoo he was started about 89% last week despite not having done squat this season ? people, including myself, expected big things. He instead delivered small catches (3) and yards (51). Not much more to say. Maybe SJax's explosion will free up Holt for a decent day against the defensively Sybil-like Pats, but at this point, you gotta bench him if you have alternatives or give it one last trade push using the "Pats secondary stinks, Denver was an aberration" line.

LT: On pace for a career low in carries (280), LT recently complained about his lack of use. Usually, when high-profile players complain about touches they're rewarded the following week. Or they're named Terrell Owens. But after another frustrating week ? 14 carries/41 yards, 6rec/26 yards -- LT's value is at a career low. So if you can peddle him based on his once-golden name and find a nostalgic LT fan willing to give you, say, Chris Johnson along with a WR or QB upgrade, done. Or if you're fighting for a playoff spot and your current team just isn't cutting it, every win counts, and you have depth elsewhere, you might as well roll the dice on a remaining schedule that includes KC twice along with IND, ATL and OAK. (e.g. I just got him in one league for Thomas Jones & Matt Schaub). But since he's in the land of kings this week -- England ? he'll likely contract the "disease of kings," gout, to go along with his weepy turf toe. Then again, since this is Bizarro Football Season, watch him light up the Saints for 135 and two TDs and confuse the hell out of all of us. (Speaking of England, for the British P.O.V. on the Saints-Chargers game and all things fantasy, check out the terrific London-based fantasy football site -- not "futbol"/soccer, but our football ? try www.footballdiner.com).

Peyton Manning Pro: Unlike past seasons, Peyton owners don't have that annual "Do I trade him before the fantasy playoffs in case Dungy starts resting his starters for the real playoffs?" worries. Con: Unlike past seasons, the Colts aren't 8-0 right now and Peyton isn't putting up Peyton numbers. So owners are thinking the unthinkable: benching him against a TEN defense that's allowed only one more passing TD than I have all season. Yes, that would be one!. Much like LT, you won't get typical Peyton stud value if you try to deal him right now ? a sample deal from one of my leagues was Peyton, Sammy Morris (pre-injury) & Vincent Jackson for Favre, Thomas Jones & Ocho ? but if you can package him with a RB/WR for a Rodgers, Warner, McNabb, Romo (if you're already playoff bound), I'd try it.

Michael Turner Herman Melville once wrote a short story called "Bartleby the Scrivener" about a Wall Street law office in which one of the lawyer/narrator's employees, Turkey, had distinct behavior patterns because he was an alcoholic: efficient, pleasant in the morning while sober, useless, surly and drunk in the afternoon while boozed up. So our narrator simply adapted and gave Turkey important work in the a.m. and unimportant work in the p.m. That's how owners might consider handling Turner. Against soft D's he's a startable "sober, efficient morning Turkey" ? averaged 148 YPG/2 TDs vs. DET, KC, and @GB -- but against tough defenses he's a bench-able "drunk, stumbling, surly afternoon Turkey" -- averaged about 50 YPG/0 TD @TB,@ CAR and vs. CHI. So, if you have alternatives you might get ballsy and rest him on the road against the tough Eagles, knowing that after that, he's got a relatively easy stretch of @OAK, NO, DEN, CAR, @SD, @NO?ending with a tough TB, @MIN in the fantasy semis and finals, so you miiiight deal him at your deadline if you've locked up a playoff berth. (And that's the last time I'll ever mention Herman Melville again, I swear. I hated that seminar in college. My professor was quite the dillhole.)

Week 8 Rankings Update

Rankings were updated Friday Evening. See everyone on the Fix Sunday.

WR Notes: News breaking Thursday afternoon indicates that Jerricho Cotchery and especially Laveranues Coles are very iffy to play Sunday. Coles reportedly had a concussion last week. I'll update their status and rankings on the Friday evening update. Brad Smith and Chansi Stuckey could both start in a choice matchup. Smith would probably be the first guy off the bench so Stuckey could stay in his usual slot role. ? Josh Morgan fever is sweeping through Rotoworld's home offices. Or at least my apartment. I'm partial to physical receivers like Morgan that don't need to be that open to make catches. He can line up from any spot on the field. Mike Martz likes to move him around. If Morgan didn't drop two passes against the Giants, he would have been over 125 yards last week. I can live with a guy who has some drops if he consistently gets open on a pass-first offense. Seattle gives up big plays to everyone and Morgan is the most likely 49er receiver to make one this week.

Don't give up on Lance Moore and Devery Henderson yet as WR3 options, especially this week. They each got six targets last week and are facing an iffy Bolts secondary. Sean Payton could use Reggie Bush's injury as an excuse to pass even more than usual. ? Chris Chambers is not listed on the rankings yet. If it looks like he'll play, he'll be ranked a little above where Malcolm Floyd is now. Vincent Jackson remains the Chargers wideout to start if you have to choose. He's been extremely steady. Floyd's acrobatic catches have also earned him a permanent role in the offense.

Muhsin Muhammad is on pace for 1,000 yards and is also a decent play in London. Jake Delhomme simply doesn't throw to secondary receivers. D.J. Hackett's potential return could change the pattern, but Moose and Steve Smith dominate their quarterback's attention like no other duo. Muhammad has helped Smith greatly by freeing him up to do what he does best: go deep. Smith is targeted on a handful of deep passes every game, regardless of whether he's open. His 17.7 yards-per-catch average would be the highest of his career. ? Keep an eye on Plaxico Burress, who missed practice the first two days of the week. Domenic Hixon could get an emergency start.

Javon Walker needs to put up some numbers in back-to-back games before he gets ranked here. Goal Line Stand status is a privilege, not a right. ? Braylon Edwards went right back to an embarrassing performance last week. He dropped at least three passes and didn't realize he was the hot receiver on one key play. I'd stick with him as a WR2 this week because the Jaguars have given up a lot of big plays and the Browns keep sending bushels of targets to Edwards, no matter how little he does with them. ? Anquan Boldin should return this week. If not, Steve Breaston moves way up despite the tough matchup. ? The Texans secondary is among the worst in the league until proven otherwise. That makes Chad Johnson and T.J. Houshmandzadeh much better plays than normal.

Calvin Johnson's matchup will be telling. Washington's secondary is one of the best in the league and they can take away premier receivers, with or without Shawn Springs in the lineup. Dan Orlovsky has not been impressive despite decent numbers last week. ? The Steelers have let Braylon Edwards and Josh Morgan get behind them in successive weeks. That's why I like Santonio Holmes a little more than Hines Ward, who has scored five times this year. ? Kevin Curtis should start in his first game back. Sports hernias are tough to recover from, so I'd rather play it safe and bench him if possible this week. He will eventually cut into DeSean Jackson's production. Reggie Brown should be the third receiver, if he plays. ? Matt Jones' suspension won't start until next week. ? Donnie Avery could have had three touchdowns last week if Marc Bulger didn't miss him. The Patriots have given up a lot of big plays, so Avery is not a bad WR3. ? Joey Galloway's status is uncertain. ? Derrick Mason and Greg Camarillo are similar rock solid WR3 options in PPR leagues. They won't get you beat.

Tight End Notes: Kellen Winslow isn't ranked. It looks like he won't play even if he won his appeal with the league. ? Antonio Gates is amazing. He's half the player he usually is, yet is still ranked second on the season in tight end points. The position is not nearly as strong as it is most years, though. Visanthe Shiancoe and Bo Scaife are ranked in the top ten. ? The Todd Heap ranking looks ridiculous, but the Oakland safeties can't cover. Heap has looked a little better in recent weeks and is well overdue for a solid afternoon. ? Shockey's status is uncertain. He's ranked that high because the Saints design a lot of plays for him, but he didn't look very explosive last week. Billy Miller will move up five spots if Shockey is out, which would be a surprise. ? Keep an eye on Marcedes Lewis and Ben Watson, two talented tight ends who show some signs of breaking out. ? Zach Miller has steadily seen more targets as the season has worn on. He had a touchdown called back last week by a boneheaded Javon Walker penalty.

"Seven Days Without Gambling Makes One Weak"
Re: Fantasy Football News 2008

Re: Fantasy Football News 2008

Morgan Can Show He's For Real
Eddie Royal has been the NFL's top rookie receiver in the first half of the season. The former Virginia Tech Hokie and current Broncos flanker leads all first-year wideouts with 39 catches for 392 yards (10.1 YPC) and two touchdowns in six games. DeSean Jackson has been second best and Donnie Avery is coming on. These players were second-round picks in April. A fifth-round rookie has a chance to emerge with a better second half than all three.

Josh Morgan, who played with Royal in college, has overtaken Bryant Johnson as the 49ers' No. 1 split end. His early-season development delayed by a staph infection, Morgan got healthy and drew the start in Week 7, busting out with five catches for 86 yards and a 30-yard touchdown against a strong Giants secondary. In the game, Morgan exhibited big-play ability and a knack for using his size (6'1/220) to box defenders out. He moved and caught confidently in traffic and made a heads-up play by kicking a J.T. O'Sullivan fumble out of the end zone to prevent a would-be Giants defensive touchdown.

You know the coaches loved that.

Morgan plays in a Mike Martz offense that typically gets more pass heavy as the season progresses, particularly when his team's defense isn't doing well. San Francisco's isn't, ranking 23rd in average yards allowed per game. A throw-first attack will get Morgan more targets.

With Mike Nolan fired, new coach Mike Singletary has given Martz a vote of confidence and is unlikely to tinker with the side of the ball he knows little of. Singletary is a former linebacker whose background is strictly defense. Martz is a former Super Bowl head coach who understands offense and is being paid well to teach it. His philosophy will remain unchanged.

This week, Morgan faces a Seattle defense that is struggling to regain an identity after a strong 2007 campaign. A sizable portion of the team's problems stem from extremely shaky play at right cornerback, where opening-day starter Kelly Jennings has been benched for Josh Wilson, then Wilson for Jordan Babineaux. In the 49ers' base set that's who Morgan will be mostly covered by Sunday. San Francisco will likely avoid testing Seahawks left corner Marcus Trufant, who's played fantastically this season. Trufant will be assigned to Isaac Bruce.

Babineaux is a trusty special teamer/nickel defender who's dabbled at both corner and safety. But there's a reason "Big Play Babs" went undrafted in 2004 and hasn't stuck at cornerback -- the more valuable position -- and that's because he doesn't run all that well. Babineaux was frequently abused in man coverage last year and Antonio Bryant hung six grabs, 115 yards, and a touchdown on the Seahawks' RCBs last week.

Morgan, who ran 4.45 at February's NFL Combine, should be able to beat Babineaux deep on Sunday. Morgan will also have an inch and 20 pounds on his defender. If Seattle substitutes for Babineaux in-game with Jennings (5'11/180) or, better yet Wilson (5'9/192), the size differential will be even more substantial.

Obviously, it will take more than one week to put Morgan in Royal's class in terms of fantasy value, but this is definitely a good week to use him as a WR3. And a big game against Seattle could give Morgan the confidence he needs to exploit favorable upcoming matchups (@ ARZ, vs. STL, @ DAL, and @ BUF) on the 49ers' schedule. It would also give fantasy owners the confidence we need to know Morgan is "for real" and playable on a weekly basis.

Week 8 Matchups to Exploit

Marques Colston vs. Chargers
Time: 1:00PM ET

Colston busted in his first game back from injury, but like a cornerback that doesn't want to get toasted on successive plays fantasy owners must exercise short memory. He is an All-Pro caliber receiver and the additional practice time with Drew Brees between now and then will help. Also, Colston is likely to be the most highly targeted Saint and New Orleans' best bet to score a touchdown in what projects to be a low-scoring game on the Wembley "pitch" in poor weather Sunday. Colston will be guarded by Chargers RCB Antonio Cromartie, who had a setback with his hip injury and has not practiced this week. The last time Cromartie missed a big chunk of reps like this he was abused -- to put it mildly -- by Brandon Marshall in Week 2. Marshall burnt him all over the field for 18 catches, 166 yards, and a TD en route to a 40-point fantasy game in PPR leagues.

Kevin Faulk vs. Rams
Time: 1:00PM ET

Bill Belichick loves playing the matchup game and there is no greater deficiency on the Rams' roster than lack of defensive back depth. St. Louis lost third safety Todd Johnson for two weeks with a bruised kidney and has just six capable DBs available. And that includes second-year CB Jonathan Wade and heavy-legged SS Corey Chavous, for whom "capable" doesn't necessarily apply. With Kelley Washington healthy again, the guess here is that Belichick floods the field with four and five wides to exploit this weakness. When the Patriots use their spread attack Faulk is the primary back and I'd expect him to lead the New England backfied in touches by a healthy margin Sunday. The sudden hype surrounding rookie free agent Benjarvus Green-Ellis threatens to prove unwarranted despite LaMont Jordan (calf) and Sammy Morris' (knee) expected inactivity.

DeSean Jackson vs. Falcons
Time: 1:00PM ET

The Eagles gave their impressive and fleet of foot rookie a big promotion this week by formally appointing him to the first-string lineup over seasoned Reggie Brown. Brown has fallen to backup status and will play only when the Birds go three wide. Jackson plays flanker in Philadelphia's base set and he will be covered by Falcons LCB Brent Grimes most of the game Sunday. Grimes, a former NFL Europe castoff, consistently has given up big weeks in man-to-man coverage this year and is battling a knee injury that will keep him at less than 100%. That will likely prevent Grimes from being able to run with Jackson, who was the fastest receiver drafted in April and runs his forty in the mid-4.3s. Jackson should lead the Eagles in targets Sunday with Kevin Curtis probably not on the same page as Donovan McNabb yet and post 5-6 catches for roughly 100 yards.

Nate Washington vs. Giants
Time: 4:15PM ET

With the Steelers deactivating Santonio Holmes following his misdemeanor marijuana arrest Washington will make the start outside opposite Hines Ward. In coverage, the Giants will assign LCB Aaron Ross to Ward's side and Corey Webster to Washington, who will start at split end. A deep threat with sometimes shaky hands, Washington will focus on running the vertical routes Holmes normally would. A former Nick Saban corner at LSU, Webster offers size and steadiness but speed receivers can get behind him. Pittsburgh is also without Willie Parker and unlikely to be able to gain much yardage on the ground with usual third-down back Mewelde Moore starting against the Giants. A pass-first game plan appears likely and Washington has 100-yard potential in the game.

Week 8 Matchups to Avoid

Donnie Avery @ Patriots
Time: 1:00PM ET

Avery has exploded on the scene since taking over as a starter three games ago and now is considered among Rams brass to be one of the team's building blocks of the future. He will have plays called for him regularly and continue to improve as a vertical route runner. However, this is not the week to expect a big game. Avery will square off with Patriots RCB Ellis Hobbs, who offers similar speed and typically has success against smaller, faster receivers like the Rams' second-round pick. Hobbs has been Lee Evans' kryptonite since 2006. Here are Evans' last four stat lines against Hobbs:

Week 1 2006: 2-25-0
Week 7 2006: 1-10-0
Week 9 2007: 1-7-0
Week 11 2007: 4-40-0

Not pretty. We can probably expect numbers not unlike the last Evans-Hobbs meeting on Sunday from Avery.

Devery Henderson vs. Chargers
Time: 1:00PM ET

Henderson has retained his starting job over Lance Moore with Marques Colston back, but both Moore and Henderson will likely struggle to generate numbers Sunday. Not only will the muddy field offset Henderson's strength -- ability to get free deep - he will go against Chargers LCB Quentin Jammer, who in Week 6 mugged Randy Moss at the line of scrimmage and held him to a 3-26-0 line. Jammer will likely employ the same tactics on Henderson and the slimy turf will greatly work to the defender's advantage. As a third receiver again behind Jeremy Shockey in the slot, Moore's fantasy value has taken a big hit and he can no longer be considered WR3 material as we move forward.

Isaac Bruce vs. Seahawks
Time: 4:15PM ET

As alluded to in this column's introduction, rookie split end Josh Morgan is the best bet to pace San Francisco in receiving versus Seattle. In coverage Bruce will draw Seahawks LCB Marcus Trufant, who's been a shutdown force for the majority of the season. 49ers coordinator Mike Martz is much more likely to call plays attempting to exploit Seattle's deficiencies at right and slot corner. Morgan is about as strong a WR3 bet as possible, while 49ers slot receiver Arnaz Battle could resurface with a 5-6 catch game for 60-70 yards. Bruce will be lucky to get 50 yards on 4-5 receptions.

"Seven Days Without Gambling Makes One Weak"
Re: NFL Fantasy Football News 2008

Re: NFL Fantasy Football News 2008

Welcome Back!
It was nothing but a Brees for Drew and the Saints, as Week 8 also featured the return of a fantasy stud, in a day that was dominated by the wide receivers. Let's take a look at the rankings, because no matter how much you project, there are always a few surprises.

Top 5 QBs:

1. Drew Brees ? 339 Yds, 3 TDs, 0 INTs, -26 Rush Yds ? Sunday was a typical Brees performance, as he spread the ball out to eight different receivers. Just another day at the office.

2. Philip Rivers ? 341 Yds, 3 TDs, 1 INT ? Rivers is quickly turning into a dominant fantasy threat, picking up the slack where LT2 has been lacking. That now makes eight passing touchdowns in his last three games. www.sandiegochargers.ws

3. Matt Schaub ? 280 Yds, 3 TDs, 0 INTs ? Stump the Schaub? I don't think so, as this now makes two consecutive weeks that Mr. Schaub has made it into the Top 5.

4. David Garrard ? 283 Yds, 2 TDs, 0 INTs, 59 Rush Yds ? Now this is more like it. Before Sunday's game, Garrard had only four passing touchdowns all season. Throw in a two-touchdown game and some rushing yards to his resume and all is solved; well at least for one week. www.jacksonvillejaguars.ws

5. Kurt Warner ? 381 Yds, 2 TDs, 1 INT ? Old man Warner was up to his old tricks on Sunday, as he has thrown for two touchdowns in all but one game this season. www.arizonacardinals.ws

Top 5 RBs:

1. Brian Westbrook ? 167 Rush Yds, 2 TDs, 6 Rec, 42 Yds ? Westbrook's much anticipated return was absolutely worth the wait. Whether you're in a PPR league, TD league, or league that rewards bonuses for yards, Westbrook is the man that can deliver smiles come Monday morning.

2. Leonard Weaver ? 13 Rush Yds, 4 Rec, 116 Yds, 2 TDs ? This whole running backs rushing for minimal yardage but exploding for huge receiving totals is becoming a trend I see (see Patrick Cobbs from 2 weeks ago).

3. LaDainian Tomlinson ? 105 Rush Yds, 5 Rec, 65 Yds, 1 TD ? Hold the phone! LT2 has made an appearance in the Top 5? Yes, he has, as this is a very encouraging sign, especially coming in lieu of the fact that Tomlinson said his toe problems are no longer an issue. www.sandiegochargers.ws

4. Leon Washington ? 67 Rush Yds, 1 TD, 3 Rec, 34 Yds, 1 TD ? "Leon can't do everything." Apparently he can, as he is a threat to score from anywhere on the field whenever he touches the ball. It's that whole "whenever" part that makes him tough to insert into fantasy lineups. www.newyorkjets.ws

5. DeAngelo Williams ? 108 Rush Yds, 1 TD, 2 Rec, 15 Yds ? It seems like Williams and Jonathan Stewart like to alternate on who gets into the Top 5. Can we please have some consistency? Is that too much to ask? www.carolinapanthers.ws

Top 5 WRs:

1. Roddy White ? 8 Rec, 113 Yds, 2 TDs ? VoRoddy, oh oh. I'm sorry if I ruined that classic song for you, but one thing that can't be ruined was White's performance on Sunday, and all season for that matter. The most encouraging sign about White's performance is that Matt Ryan forces the ball to him even when he isn't open. From a fantasy perspective, you gotta love that. www.atlantafalcons.ws

2. Steve Smith ? 5 Rec, 117 Yds, 2 TDs ? As I said last week, as long as Delhomme stays healthy Smith will continue to put up dominant fantasy numbers ? going over the 100-yard mark for the third consecutive game. Hmm, I'd say that's pretty good. www.carolinapanthers.ws

3. Donnie Avery ? 6 Rec, 163 Yds, 1 TD ? That now makes for Avery's second consecutive game with a score, as he is looking more-and-more like the heir apparent to Torry Holt ? showing the speed an elusiveness that made him the first WR taken in last year's draft.

4. Anquan Boldin ? 9 Rec, 63 Yds, 2 TDs, 30 Rush Yds ? Boldin looked like he hadn't missed a beat on Sunday, after missing two weeks with a sinus fracture. There are plenty of footballs to go around in Arizona, as long as Kurt Warner remains at the helm. www.arizonacardinals.ws

5. Santana Moss ? 9 Rec, 140 Yds, 1 TD, 1 PR TD ? Mr. Big Play struck in a big way on Sunday, as he continued to build on his very impressive season ? totaling 140-yards for the third time this season. www.washingtonredskins.ws

Top 5 TEs:

1. Antonio Gates ? 6 Rec, 96 Yds, 1 TD ? All of the key pieces to San Diego's offense were clicking on Sunday (see Rivers and LT2 above). Gates still remains one of the best, if not the best TE in the game. www.sandiegochargers.ws

2. Tony Gonzalez ? 6 Rec, 79 Yds, 1 TD ? Tony G has put together back-to-back very solid games, as he remains a must start every week. www.kansascitychiefs.ws

3. Kevin Boss ? 3 Rec, 34 Yds, 1 TD ? Who's the Boss? For one week it was the Giants' tight end, as it was an encouraging sign to see Eli look his way in the red-zone.

4. Billy Miller ? 7 Rec, 82 Yds, 0 TD ? Miller has gone over the 50-yard plateau in four consecutive games, as he has taken full advantage of a disgruntled Jeremy Shockey.

5. Chris Cooley ? 6 Rec, 74 Yds, 0 TD ? A week after being in the Bottom 5, Cooley showed why he's still a very reliable fantasy option in Week 8.

Bottom 5 QBs:

1. Ben Roethlisberger ? 189 Yds, 1 TD, 4 INTs ? Let's look at this as a step in the wrong direction.
2. Trent Edwards ? 227 Yds, 0 TDs, 1 INT, 17 Rush Yds, 1 FL
3. J.T. O'Sullivan ? 131 Yds, 0 TDs, 1 INT, 1 FL ? Looks like the JTO era might finally be over, after his 11th fumble of the season. www.buffalobills.ws
4. Jeff Garcia ? 227 Yds, 0 TDs www.tampabaybuccaneers.ws
5. Ryan Fitzpatrick ? 155 Yds, 0 TDs, 2 INTs, 42 Rush Yds, 1 FL

Bottom 5 RBs:

1. Edgerrin James ? 17 Rush Yds, 0 TDs, 1 FL ? It's Hightower time baby!
2. Brandon Jacobs ? 47 Rush Yds, 0 TDs, 1 Rec, 6 Yds www.newyorkgiants.ws
3. Julius Jones ? 9 Rush Yds, 0 TDs, 2 Rec, 22 Yds
4. Ronnie Brown ? 43 Rush Yds, 0 TDs, 1 Rec, 5 Yds ? What's with this Ricky Williams touchdown nonsense? www.miamidolphins.ws
5. Maurice Jones-Drew ? 29 Rush Yds, 0 TDs, 3 Rec, 19 Yds www.jacksonvillejaguars.ws

Bottom 5 WRs:

1. Terrell Owens ? 5 Rec, 33 Yds, 0 TDs ? This is becoming a common trend.
2. Josh Morgan ? 0 Rec, 0 Yds ? Sigh! The growing pains of a rookie receiver.
3. Plaxico Burress ? 3 Rec, 15 Yds, 0 TDs ? Someone needs to learn how to follow the rules. www.newyorkgiants.ws
4. Hines Ward ? 3 Rec, 30 Yds, 0 TDs
5. Torry Holt ? 3 Rec, 28 Yds, 0 TDs

Bottom 5 TEs:

1. Jeremy Shockey ? 1 Rec, 6 Yds, 0 TDs ? Billy the Kid stole the limelight from Mr. Shockey on Sunday (see above).
2. Vernon Davis ? 4 Rec, 29 Yds, 0 TDs ? This list should be renamed "The Vernon Davis and Others" list.
3. Jason Witten ? 1 Rec, 8 Yds, 0 TDs ? He got injured so I felt bad putting him on the list, but it was a disappointing day for his owners.
4. Owen Daniels ? 3 Rec, 21 Yds, 0 TDs

"Seven Days Without Gambling Makes One Weak"
Re: NFL Fantasy Football News 2008

Re: NFL Fantasy Football News 2008

Halfway Home
Not to go all Tony Kornheiser on you, but I'm going to put on my columnist hat and think about some of the biggest storylines as we reach halftime of the 2008 fantasy football season.

Storylines I wasn't expecting to write about

1. LaDainian Tomlinson saved his season against the Saints
www.sandiegochargers.ws
What a difference a week makes. Last Sunday, LT2 wasn't even on the field during crunch time against the Bills. Then Tomlinson pleaded to Norv Turner to put the gameplan on his shoulders, a bold move for a player who hasn't performed all season. Tomlinson responded.

The spin moves were back. He made people miss and broke tackles. Most importantly, he caught passes. Yes, it was against the Saints, but Tomlinson has many beaucoup matchups in the second half. The toe appears to be a non-factor and now he has a bye to get healthy. All is not solved in San Diego: the offensive line has issues and the defense will force the Chargers to play catch-up. Don't expect the '06 LT or even the second-half '07 LT, but Tomlinson showed he could be a top tier fantasy back again. He can beat up on the weaklings. That's all we ask.

2. There is no vaccination available for Lance Moore Fever

Who cares if Marques Colston is back? Lance Moore fever is a sickness with no known cure. Moore dropped a soccer-style celebration on the Wembley crowd Sunday after hauling in a ridiculous touchdown toss from Drew Brees. Moore's numbers can be inconsistent, but he consistently gets red zone targets and has topped 75 yards in four out of the last six games. Saints passing attack is good enough to support a few quality fantasy options. That may not be great news long-term for Colston, but he'll round into form. Buy low as the Saints hit their bye week.

3. Todd Heap is done
www.baltimoreravens.ws
It's not all Joe Flacco; Derrick Mason still makes plays. Perhaps all the injuries over the years have finally caught up to Heap. He's not even blocking well. I talked myself into using him as a matchup play against the Raiders. Oakland's safeties can't cover tight ends, but they can cover Heap to the tune of two catches for 17 yards. Joe Flacco was a better receiver than Heap Sunday. Heap is no longer even a matchup play. I won't make the mistake again. That's to say about a guy who was on a Hall of Fame track at one point in his career.

While we're on the Ravens, Mark Clayton has not returned to the face of the Earth after falling off it last year.

4. Three rookie receivers who weigh under 190 pounds are legitimate fantasy starters

Welcome aboard Donnie Avery, DeSean Jackson, and Eddie Royal! Avery was supposedly the biggest reach on draft day; the most raw wideout taken on the first day of the draft. Now he is the entire Rams passing attack. The Patriots defense couldn't handle his speed Sunday, and Avery is already an expert at mid-air adjustments. That comes in handy when Marc Bulger keeps under throwing passes.

Jackson led the Eagles in receiving in Kevin Curtis' first game back, showing that Fraction's incredible start has legs. Royal, who just enjoyed the bye week, has spoiled his owners since a monster Week 1. Size is most definitely not everything at wide receiver in today's NFL.

This was supposed to be the worst rookie wideout class in years, but this trio has proven once again how tough it is for evaluators to know which pass-catchers will step up at the pro level.

5. Darren McFadden isn't in my top-five rookie running backs going forward
www.oaklandraiders.ws
Turf toe is a bitch. So is the Ravens defense, so it's just as well he missed Sunday. Justin Fargas didn't do much better.

6. Santana Moss is back to his 2005 prime
www.washingtonredskins.ws
It was easy to forget Moss was a receiver capable of putting up nearly 1,500 yards. Just like in '05, Moss will have off weeks. Live with them if he goes over 140 yards every few games. Moss is one of the smartest receivers in football, and his improved health allows him to run beautiful routes. Including his punt return score against the Lions, he has six touchdowns on the season.

7. Ryan Fitzpatrick, Dan Orlovsky, and Brad Johnson matter

These backups aren't in fantasy lineups, but their wide receivers are. Fitzpatrick couldn't go deep against the Texans, which is a horrible sign for T.J. Houshmandzadeh and Chad Johnson owners. The Bengals Pro Bowlers have turned into generic WR3s who rack up short catches. (PPR leaguers can take solace.)

Orlovsky continues to post deceptively competent numbers. Calvin Johnson owners should remain concerned because it's a mirage. Brad Johnson only has one week left as a starter, we hope, but he's rendered Terrell Owens irrelevant.

8. Fred Jackson is a drain on Marshawn Lynch's value
www.buffalobills.ws
Lynch owners wondered early Sunday if their star was hurt when Jackson took three straight snaps inside the five-yard line. Nope, the Bills just like Fred Jackson that much. They also played Jackson throughout crunch time last week before over Lynch. It's hard to blame the cagey Dick Jauron; Jackson often looks like the better player. Jackson could make the Pro Bowl at fullback if they lined him up there more often.

While this is a concern, it was Lynch who scored a touchdown late for Buffalo. The man with the best grill in the NFL is still managing to live up to his top-ten draft billing. He's doing things he didn't as a rookie: score and catch passes. Jackson may just prevent Lynch from reaching top-five insanity, but he's steady during a season when many top backs are not.

9. The former Lion has officially become "Roy E. Williams"

10.Steve Breaston is the most valuable third receiver in the league
www.arizonacardinals.ws
Even with Anquan Boldin back, Breaston caught nine passes for 91 yards against Carolina. Boldin added to his league-leading total of touchdown catches with two more. He now has eight. Larry Fitzgerald led the trio with 115 yards. Every fantasy owner goes home happy.

11. Kurt Warner is making a legitimate case for league MVP
www.arizonacardinals.ws
He wouldn't get my vote, but he'd get my others receiving votes. More importantly, Warner is a fantasy MVP candidate once again. Aside from the Jets game, he's mostly avoided turnover meltdowns. His 381-yard, two-touchdown effort against the previously stingy Panthers defense cemented Brenda's baby as matchup-proof. Warner will keep throwing like crazy because of a shaky defense and worse running game. He's overdue to get hurt, but owners should enjoy the run while it lasts.

12. Steve Smith is the most consistent fantasy wideout alive
www.carolinapanthers.ws
I didn't see Jake Delhomme coming back from Tommy John surgery better than new. I was wrong. After a year with David Carr, Smith loves life and making plays absolutely no other YACrabbit can make.

13. Selvin Young belongs on many waiver wires

With Michael Pittman playing well and Ryan Torain returning, Young is going to be an explosive third banana off the bench for Denver. He didn't help fantasy teams much as the first banana. He's not worth keeping in shallow formats.

14. Matt Forte was the second best runner from Tulane in October

Take a bow, Mewelde Moore. I have serious doubts Willie Parker would have gone for 94 total yards and a touchdown against the G-Men. Steelers fans: Let me know if you think if the Steelers are a better offense with Willie Parker as the starter. Luckily, the Steelers coaches will soon get to use both backs.

15. Chad Pennington is on pace for 3,723 yards
www.miamidolphins.ws
295 yards against an awesome Ravens defense and 314 yards against an excellent Bills defense in successive weeks. The NFL's all-time leader in completion percentage deserves a little respect! Now if only the Wildcat wasn't stealing all the touchdowns.
<!--RW-->
Storylines I should have known I'd be writing about

1. Jets fans wish they still had Chad Pennington

The only real surprise here is that it took until Week 8 for NBCSports.com superproducer Matt Casey to voice every Jets fan's latent desire. Of course that thought came right around Brett Favre's latest interception return for a touchdown almost torpedoed Gang Green's season.

2. The Chargers secondary has fallen apart

Ted Cottrell ? Shawn Merriman = Chargers secondary before '07.

3. J.T. O'Sullivan lost his job by midseason

Mike Singletary rightly pulled JTurnOver just before halftime against the Seahawks after a brutal interception return for a touchdown. (One can question Singletary for not taking the ball out of O'Sullivan's hands by calling for a field goal on fourth and four to make it a one-score game, but one wouldn't question Singletary to his face. He's scary.)

We'll see how much pull Mike Martz has during the bye week because JTO is his man. But O'Sullivan is hard to defend after that performance against a dreadful Seattle defense. Yards-per-attempt (YPA) is my favorite catchall stat for quarterbacks, but JTO's top-eight ranking in the category shows its limitations.

Shaun Hill, by the way, won't save your season. Expect more dink and dunks, which could help Frank Gore, but hurt the 49ers wideouts.

4. Trent Edwards is the guy we thought David Garrard would be

Until Sunday, that is. Edwards had his worst game of the season in Miami, but until then he was racking up steady yardage with minimal turnovers. Bad games happen, and Edwards is still averaging 7.7 YPA and completing 68% of his passes. He's made a quick maturation to rock solid QB2. Considering the poise he showed as a rookie, this shouldn't be such a surprise.

5. Lee Evans is one of the best five receivers in the NFL

See above. Evans' talent has always been there, but now he's getting help. Although he's averaging 20 yards-per-catch, he's no longer just a deep threat. Evans sets up defenders well and can make tough catches in tight quarters. He showed off his whole repertoire in a seven-catch, 116-yard effort against Miami. He's on pace for 1,389 yards and the touchdowns will come.

6. The Ravens defense is all the way back. The Titans defense never left.

Storylines I was expecting to write about

1. Derek Anderson has job security issues

The frustrating part for Brady Quinn Nation is that their fair-haired Republican was this close to playing this week, just like before the Giants game. Anderson only seems to play well with his job on the line, going vertical to Braylon Edwards and Syndric Steptoe in a much-needed effort against the Jaguars. It was uneven, but it was enough. They offense moved the ball consistently. Good news for Quinn lovers: the Ravens are next on Cleveland's schedule.

2. Edgerrin James is slipping fast

The Cardinals running game bottomed out Sunday against Carolina. Edge had seven carries for 17 yards. Tim Hightower had only three yards on six carries, but made a fantastic cutback run for a touchdown. He also lined up wide near the goal line. The Cardinals aren't even trying to run anymore.

3. Joey Galloway is finally looking his age (37)

He was overdue. At least Galloway looked spry in his return to the field against the Cowboys, getting open for three catches and 38 yards. So at least he topped his age, which is almost like shooting your age in golf, but the bar is set much lower. Jeff Garcia missed Galloway another time for a potential big play. Galloway looks like a boom-or-bust WR3 play moving forward.

4. The Lions running game is worthless

One of my favorite indignant reader emails of the year told me it was impossible for all the Lions runners to be busts, as if it didn't happen the year before. Tatum Bell didn't make it to opening day, and Kevin Smith isn't talented enough to overcome Detroit's offensive line. Rudi Johnson isn't either. Maybe no one is.

5. Torry Holt aged hard

The signs were there. He couldn't do anything after the catch last season and the speed is waning. I figured Holt would get enough targets to make up for decreasing efficiency. The Rams offense collapsed around him and Holt can no longer overcome double teams. Take away a fluky 45-yard touchdown and Holt has 244 yards in seven games. This is one first-half bust that I don't believe will truly bounce back.

6. The Seahawks running backs are canceling each other out

It took longer than expected, but Maurice Morris and Julius Jones are officially splitting carries. Jones started against San Francisco, but Morris started the second half and finished with more carries. They both did squat against a soft 49ers rush defense, then watched Leonard bleeping Weaver break off two touchdowns over 40 yards. No one said this was fair. Or predictable.

,7. Antonio Gates has rounded into shape without hurting his fantasy owners

Gates finally looked like himself Sunday, getting separation from Saints defenders and showing quickness on his way to 96 yards and a touchdown. Gates managed to produce in the first half despite being a lesser version of himself. Expect him to be the best fantasy tight end in the second half after being the second best in the first half.

8. Frank Gore is on pace for nearly 2,000 total yards, but his teammates are letting him down

His season is setting up to be similar to his breakout 2006 campaign: tons of yards, 60+ receptions, not enough touchdowns, and a steady top-eight running back finish that makes you dreamily imagine what he could do on a real NFL offense. Maybe only I do that.

Re: NFL Fantasy Football News 2008

Titans Stay Unbeaten
Albert Haynesworth and Tennessee's defense showed Monday night why they're the best in football, holding Indianapolis to just 14 points before a garbage-time touchdown in the closing moments of a 31-21 win. Manning and company have won five straight AFC South championships, but the Titans have all but sewn up the division title thanks to a four-game lead with nine games remaining.

Not only are they the lone unbeaten team at 7-0, the Titans have won 10 straight regular-season games dating back to last year. Meanwhile, at 3-4 the Colts are off to their worst start since Manning's rookie season and now find themselves in danger of missing the playoffs for the first time since 2001. Sunday night's game against New England is suddenly just a matchup between two mediocre teams.

While the Titans establish to a national audience that they're very much "for real" and the Colts keep showing that they're just not the same, here are some other notes from around football ?

* Along with the Titans' defense doing their usual thing and Kerry Collins passing for under 200 yards in his sixth consecutive winning start, Monday night also saw Chris Johnson and LenDale White keep chugging along as fantasy football's top backfield duo. Johnson again did most of the heavy lifting with 96 total yards on 23 touches and White again did most of the goal-line plunging with two scores.

My main man Plumpy gained 13 measly yards on 10 carries, but twice found the end zone from a yard out to extend his NFL-leading touchdown total to 10. Eight of those 10 touchdowns have come from one or two yards and White also scored from six yards out, which makes his 80-yard run against the Chiefs last week all the more amazing (especially for anyone fortunate enough to see it).

Johnson has averaged 5.1 yards on 122 carries with multiple grabs each game. White has averaged 3.6 yards on 90 carries?or 2.7 yards on 89 if you ignore his mini-marathon?and has three total grabs. Despite the huge gap in performance they've both been among the top 10 backs in most scoring systems and thanks to all the short scores White trails Johnson by under 10 points in most leagues.

* It was relatively fun while it lasted, but new coach Mike Singletary put an end to the J.T. O'Sullivan era Monday afternoon by benching offensive coordinator Mike Martz's pet project in favor of Shaun Hill. On the surface JTO's performance was solid, as his 7.7 yards per throw ranked tied for sixth in the league and only Drew Brees had more plays of 20-plus yards.

There's obviously no doubt that O'Sullivan can stretch the field?that's why Martz fell for him, after all?but those numbers fail to account for his holding the ball far too long and making tons of big mistakes. Despite ranking just 14th in total pass attempts, O'Sullivan leads the NFL in interceptions, fumbles, and sacks, which is a trifecta that cancels out a nice-looking YPA and a slew of big plays.

Hill will never stretch the field like O'Sullivan, but he also won't take a sack every eight dropbacks and should be able to avoid turning the ball over three times per game. He's a dink-and-dunk passer, but looked capable while seeing extended action in three games last year and posted good numbers in relief Sunday. Hill is worth owning and has a chance to be a solid QB2 option most weeks.

* Hill replacing O'Sullivan is seemingly positive news for Vernon Davis, because he's more likely to get some dump-off targets now. However, the disappointing tight end will first have to escape from the doghouse after a frustrated Singletary ordered him to the locker room in the fourth quarter Sunday. "I told him he'd do a better job for us right now taking a shower," Singletary explained afterward.

Singletary said Monday that he'd have to "think about" whether Davis will remain a starter before adding later than he "isn't a problem guy" and "works his tail off," but "just forgets sometimes that the team is more important." Davis has just 196 yards on 16 catches through eight games after catching 52 balls for 509 yards in 2007, but there's an opportunity for him to salvage the year if Hill keeps starting.

Two-Minute Drill: Coach Romeo Crennel hinted Monday that Kellen Winslow will resume starting in Week 9, pushing Steve Heiden back to the bench after he did a nice job filling in ? When asked Monday about the Cardinals' backfield, coach Ken Whisenhunt wouldn't rule out Tim Hightower starting at some point despite making it clear that Edgerrin James remains atop the depth chart ? Benjarvus Green-Ellis started Sunday, but totaled just 18 offensive snaps compared to 44 for Kevin Faulk ? Warrick Dunn got just three touches Sunday because he's still being bothered by a pinched nerve in his neck, which qualifies as good news for Earnest Graham ? After posting a season-high 96 yards Sunday, Antonio Gates explained that he feels "great" and finally has "a sense of confidence" again now that "everything has changed" with various injuries healing ? Joe Klopfenstein is playing through a torn wrist ligament that requires him to wear a cast, which may explain his lack of production since taking over for Randy McMichael ? Daunte Culpepper reportedly canceled a scheduled visit to Kansas City by informing the Chiefs that he has a better opportunity with another team.

Red Zone: Carson Palmer (elbow) has been ruled out for Week 9, but continues to say that he's still hoping to return this year ? Coach Jim Haslett said Monday that Steven Jackson (quadriceps) "looked good" in practice and "should be ready to go" in Week 9, pushing Antonio Pittman back to the bench ? Matt Hasselbeck was examined by a back specialist Monday and Deion Branch (heel) still can't go in back-to-back practices, so they both look unlikely to return this week ? Coach Wade Phillips said Monday that he's awaiting the results of an MRI exam before determining Jason Witten's (ribs) status for Week 9 ? Clinton Portis (ankle) and Santana Moss (hamstring) both suffered injuries late in Week 8, but according to coach Jim Zorn the bigger concern is Moss' health ? With Matt Jones potentially beginning his three-game suspension, coach Jack Del Rio said Monday that he expects Mike Walker (knee) to return this week ? Josh Reed (ankle) is expected to miss 2-3 weeks after catching 26 passes through seven games, giving Roscoe Parrish and James Hardy increased targets ? Brandon Lloyd (knee) resumed practicing Monday after missing three straight games.

Re: NFL Fantasy Football News 2008

Mr. October
With baseball's World Series hanging in the balance and Halloween just around the corner, it's time to conjure up the ghosts of Mr. October past. Reggie Jackson first earned the nickname from a combination of Thurman Munson's disgust and Jackson's heroics against the Dodgers in the 1977 Series.

Upon being approached for an interview during the '77 World Series, the acerbic Munson sarcastically suggested that the scribe should "Go ask Mr. October" because of Jackson's past post-season performances. When "the straw that stirs the drink" put on a clinic with a three-home-run performance to seal the championship in Game 6, the Mr. October nickname became Jackson's for life. The moniker took on a life of its own by the time the Yanks signed Dave Winfield to a monster contract in 1981, and a Seinfeld-esque George Steinbrenner allegedly quipped, "I let Mr. October get away and I got Mr. May."

Waiver Wired's Mr. October has been the sprightly 5'11", 190-pound rookie speedster, Donnie Avery. A waiver wire suggestion for all of this month, Avery has averaged 97 yards in three October games. As the first receiver off the board in April, the University of Houston wideout was widely panned as one of the draft's biggest reaches. For three straight games, though, opposing defenses have been unable to handle his speed, and Avery has made plays deep down the field with increasing regularity.

Avery's October prowess began with a clutch one-handed bomb to put the Rams in position for the game-winning field goal against the Redskins in Week 6. That catch got the Rams into the win column for the first time all year, but Avery was even more impressive the following week against the Cowboys. Though he finished with a relatively modest four catches for 55 yards and a touchdown, Avery could have easily made waves with a 3-touchdown performance -- he had one touchdown overturned, and Marc Bulger overthrew him on play that would have gone for 90 yards. His arrival on the fantasy scene was inevitable, though, as he torched the Patriots' outclassed secondary for 163 yards and a touchdown on six catches in Week 8. With Torry Holt struggling to get open and showing nothing after the catch, Avery has emerged as the Rams most reliable weapon in the passing game. If he's still sitting on your league's waiver wire, the 4.25 playmaker is the no-brainer choice for the top waiver selection.

On to the waiver wire. Here's how I rank the likely targets at each position. Full writeups of each player are below.

QUARTERBACKS

Chad Pennington, Dolphins - Pop-gun Pennington is averaging just one touchdown per game on the season, but he's putting up unbelievable yardage numbers. Over the past three weeks, he's averaging 298 yards per game with a completion percentage north of 70.

Pennington gets a potential shootout against a Broncos defense minus Champ Bailey this week before Seattle's 30th ranked pass defense comes to town in Week 10. He's still available in almost half of all leagues, so it's time to pounce on the cagey QB2.

Recommendation: Should be owned in all leagues

Shaun Hill, 49ers - The Niners have conveniently announced Hill as their starting quarterback before waiver wires run this week. He'll have a bye week to get ready for Arizona in Week 10, and then the Rams head to San Fran in Week 11.

In a three game trial late last season, Hill showed that he could move the chains and spread the ball around while managing the offense. Though he wasn't given a legitimate opportunity to win the job this preseason, Hill picked up where he left off last season when he replaced the reverse Triple Crown leader (interceptions, fumbles, and sacks) J.T. O'Sullivan in Week 8. Hill's quick release plays much better in Mike Martz's system behind a sieve offensive line, and he should make for a fine QB2 the rest of the way.

Recommendation: Should be owned in 12-team leagues

Marc Bulger, Rams - Loyal readers of Gregg Rosenthal's Pancake Blocks blog know that Bulger's 300-yard game in Week 8 shouldn't necessarily have hearts leaping in fantasy land. The Rams are playing a much friskier brand of football under new coach Jim Haslett, but owners should also consider that Sunday was the first game over 200 yards for Bulger this season. As Gregg pointed out, Bulger hasn't been able to shake the bad habits he picked up behind last season's gruesome offensive line.

Bulger is a better option as a QB2 than the Orlovskys and Thigpens of the world, but keep expectations in check coming off of that 300-yard effort in Week 8.

Recommendation: Worth a look in 12-team leagues

Dan Orlovsky, Lions - Still doing just enough to keep the starting job, Orlovsky hasn't produced a turnover in his three starts. He seems like a safe bet for 200 yards and a Calvin Johnson touchdown most weeks, but is that package something you need on your roster?

Recommendation: Worth a look in two quarterback leagues

Seneca Wallace, Seahawks - Mike Holmgren didn't sound confident about Matt Hasselbeck's chances of playing in the near future, and there are whispers that he could be done for the season. Meanwhile, Wallace's strained calf has improved, and he put on a much more efficient performance against the Niners in Week 8.

It's worth noting, however, that both of his touchdowns came on fluky long catch-and-runs from fullback Leonard Weaver. As far as I'm concerned, that's not production to rely on with any sort of regularity. With subpar weapons, Wallace is no better than a desperation play.

Recommendation: Worth a look in two quarterback leagues

Tyler Thigpen, Chiefs - Will the real Tyler Thigpen please stand up? Thigpen was a completely different quarterback Sunday than the train-wreck behind center against the Falcons in Week 3. I was pleasantly surprised by Thigpen's show of competence, but I would wager that Week 8 was an aberration. We will see the Thigpen of old against the Buccaneers brutal pass defense this week.

Recommendation: Worth a look in two quarterback leagues

<!--RW-->
RUNNING BACKS

Kevin Faulk/LaMont Jordan, Patriots - With Sammy Morris and LaMont Jordan out for the Rams game, it didn't take long for Bill Belichick to make the switch from a struggling Benjarvus Green-Ellis to old reliable Kevin Faulk. Faulk played 44 snaps to Benjarvus' 18 Sunday, and the split is likely to continue against the Colts in Week 9.

Be sure to keep an eye on LaMont Jordan's status this week. He was on track to return early last week before tweaking his strained calf in practice. If he returns this week, it's possible that it could be in the lead back role. As of Tuesday, Faulk is the safest bet in the Patriots backfield.

Recommendation: Should be owned in 12-team leagues

Ryan Torain, Broncos - Torain is my kind of roster stash. Michael Pittman is playing well, but Torain's second-half role will be primarily decided on the basis of his own play. If he comes on like a house afire, Torain will work his way into a timeshare at the very least. If he stumbles in his early work, he'll be remaindered to the bench with the likes of Andre Hall. It all depends on first impressions, and the rookie gets the Dolphins in Week 9 before heading to Cleveland the following week.

Recommendation: Should be owned in 12-team leagues

Cedric Benson, Bengals - I have long been a Benson basher. In Chicago, Benson was a mental case who couldn't run with any kind of explosion, whiffed on key blocks, and was awful in the passing game. And that was on the rare occasion when he could stay healthy.

You wouldn't know it to look at the Bengals box scores, but Benson has been reborn in Cincinnati. He's running with confidence and power for the first time in his career, but the Ryan Fitzpatrick offense is so inept that it can't possibly support a successful rushing attack. Though Benson's improvement is promising, check out the murderer's row on the horizon: Jaguars, bye, Eagles, Steelers, Ravens. Don't expect to use him anytime soon unless you have nowhere else to turn.

Recommendation: Should be owned in 12-team leagues

Kolby Smith, Chiefs - Larry Johnson has been summoned to Commissioner Goodell's office for a Tuesday meeting, and it's probable that a multi-game suspension is in the offing. In the meantime, Smith lucked out with Jamaal Charles' high ankle sprain suffered in Week 8 action.

Smith remains a low-talent option in a poor offense, but he could put up some points in the right matchup. This week's game against the Bucs is not that matchup.

Recommendation: Should be owned in 12-team leagues

Derrick Ward, Giants - Incredibly consistent with high upside should Brandon Jacobs suffer an injury, Ward has totaled at least 50 yards in every game this season. He's the ideal RB4, and you could do much worse for a weekly flex.

Recommendation: Should be owned in 12-team leagues

Maurice Morris, Seahawks - The Seahawks offense will continue to struggle to move the ball with Matt Hasselbeck on the sidelines, but Morris appears to have overtaken Julius Jones as the lead runner. Though Morris received more carries than Jones Sunday for the first time this season, expect this to remain a frustrating committee attack.

Recommendation: Worth a look in 12-team leagues

Ray Rice, Ravens - Rice is coming off his best game of the season, totaling 101 yards on 11 touches against the Raiders. We can't consider him a reliable fantasy option, however, until the Ravens commit to giving him a significant weekly role. With Willis McGahee in line for 20 touches weekly, that's not likely to happen any time soon. Right now, he makes for a decent stash and nothing more.

Recommendation: Worth a look in deeper leagues

Fred Jackson, Bills - A first half sequence against the Dolphins had the Rotoworld instant messaging going back and forth Sunday: was Marshawn Lynch injured? Why else would Fred Jackson be getting three straight carries inside the 10-yard line so early in the game? It turns out the Bills coaches simply have that much confidence in Jackson, and he's fully ingrained in the weekly game plan. Consider him a more inconsistent version of Derrick Ward going forward.

Recommendation: Worth a look in deeper leagues

WIDE RECEIVERS

Donnie Avery, Rams - As we've mentioned in the past few Waiver Wired articles, Avery's 4.25 speed is a problem for opposing defenses. Throw in his impressive ability to adjust the ball in mid-air, and Avery is beginning to earn consideration as a weekly fantasy starter.

It certainly appears that he's bypassed a creaky Torry Holt to earn Marc Bulger's trust as the No. 1 receiver in the Rams offense. Avery's playmaking ability leaves him as the obvious wide receiver pick for those with early waiver selections this week.

Recommendation: Should be owned in all leagues

Ted Ginn, Dolphins - It was tough to tell if Ginn's breakout game was more about Bills cornerback Terrence McGee playing at 75%, or if Ginn had finally earned Chad Pennington's trust. I suspect it was a mixture of both. The Dolphins clearly came out planning to attack McGee, including the first pass of the game going 46 yards down the sideline to Ginn. Pennington kept going back to the same well throughout the game, and was even looking Ginn's way for key third-down conversions late in the game.

At the very least, Ginn's 7-catch, 175-yard performance earns him a roster stash to see if he can keep it up. Even better, those owners inclined to ride the hot hand have the advantage of a juicy Week 9 matchup in Denver.

Recommendation: Should be owned in 12-team leagues

Joey Galloway, Buccaneers - Galloway has been a boom-or-bust weekly play for a couple of years now, but it's going to even more guesswork at age 37 with Antonio Bryant taking over the No. 1 role. He's worth a stash to see if he can get rolling, but beware of getting burnt playing the weekly matchup game with your WR3.

Recommendation: Should be owned in 12-team leagues

Mike Walker, Jaguars - Walker was coming like a freight train before a sprained MCL sidelined him after an impressive Sunday night performance against the Steelers. Jack Del Rio expects Walker to return this week, so pick him up and play the waiting game for a week or two. It won't be long before David Garrard starts to look his way again.

Recommendation: Worth a look in 12-team leagues

James Hardy, Bills - Starting flanker Josh Reed is out indefinitely with a strained Achilles, so it's the poor man's Plax's time to shine in Buffalo. Trent Edwards sent several jump balls Hardy's way in Week 8, and I would expect that trend to continue. Hardy is far from a sure bet to take advantage of his plum opportunity, but his upside makes him worth a stash in larger leagues.

Recommendation: Monitor in deep leagues

TIGHT ENDS

Bo Scaife, Titans - I held off on the Scaife endorsement before finally bowing to Titans trends last week. Scaife led all Titans receivers in targets once again Monday night, and may have finally earned a look as a borderline TE1. It's worth noting that Alge Crumpler was also heavily involved, and the two are likely to split production going forward. www.tennesseetitans.ws

Recommendation: Should be owned 12-team leagues

Billy Miller, Saints - He just keeps on producing week-in and week-out. Miller will have a smaller role in the passing game once Jeremy Shockey returns to full health, which could happen after the Saints' Week 9 bye. Know what you're getting yourself into with Shockey's imminent return, but Miller has earned enough of Drew Brees' trust to maintain a weekly role.

Recommendation: Monitor in 12-team leagues

Martellus Bennett, Cowboys - The Cowboys are awaiting the results of Jason Witten's MRI on his injured ribs. We should know by Wednesday whether he will play this week, but early indications are not positive. If Witten sits, the athletic Bennett would likely take over most of the pass-catching duties at tight end against the Giants this week. Witten owners should pick him up for insurance.

Recommendation: Monitor in 12-team leagues

TEAM DEFENSE

Jaguars - The Jags get the Ryan Fitzpatrick-led Bengals this week before taking on Detroit in Week 10. For those leagues where the Jags are available, that's a nice two-week window of opportunity. Throw in an overdue explosive return man in Brian Witherspoon, and Jacksonville is an even more attractive pickup. www.jacksonvillejaguars.ws

Falcons - John Abraham meet JaMarcus Russell. The Falcons may not be the Ravens, but they can get after the quarterback. Just ask Donovan McNabb about the whooping he took Sunday. www.atlantafalcons.ws

Browns - The Browns defense has been showing some bite ever since the turnaround game with the Giants. Shaun Rodgers has been a monster, and the return of Sean Jones has helped bolster the secondary. They have a home game against Joe Flacco and the Ravens in Week 9. www.clevelandbrowns.ws

Re: NFL Fantasy Football News 2008

Re: NFL Fantasy Football News 2008

Don't Shut Up, Donnie
Donny was a good bowler and a good man. He was one of us. He was a man who loved the outdoors. And bowling.

- Walter Sobchak, The Big Lebowski

When the Rams stuck rookie Donnie Avery in the starting lineup last month, my take was that "he's an intriguing speedster and may be force fed targets," but an immediate impact would be very tough because of his "lack of polish and an ugly quarterback situation." However, after closely watching several Rams games just to get a first-hand look at Avery, my opinion of his short-term potential changed.

Two weeks ago my recap of the Rams' shocking win over the Cowboys included a note about how Avery is "dripping with potential and now looks to be cemented as a big part of the offense." However, last week's 6-163-1 explosion versus the Patriots went well beyond even my adjusted outlook for the diminutive speedster from Houston who many pegged as a major overdraft in the second round.

Having watched Avery rack up 302 total yards over the past three games there's now little doubt in my mind that he's the real deal. Not only does Avery possess truly elite speed, he has better hands and route-running skills than he was given credit for coming out of college and has shown the ability to make nice mid-route adjustments on underthrown passes from Marc Bulger.

Betting on any rookie receiver being a consistent, week-to-week fantasy asset is usually a mistake and the Rams' offense remains shaky enough that he's bound to go through some rough patches in the second half, but Avery has been hugely impressive and has quickly overtaken Torry Holt as Bulger's primary target. He's a great keeper-league building block and looks like a capable WR2 right now.

While Avery emerges as my second-favorite Donnie/Donny and convinces me to float a "Sweet Prince" nickname by starting the "I'm throwing rocks tonight. Mark it, Dude" phrase of his career, here are some other notes from around football ?

* Earlier this week the Detroit Free Press had an amazing stat: Six quarterbacks have set their career-high passer rating versus the Lions this year. And they've only played seven games. Detroit has allowed 9.5 yards per throw?which ranks dead last in the NFL by over 10 percent?and they have a grand total of one pick while allowing a 118.0 combined quarterback rating. Seriously.

All of which is why Kyle Orton is a no-brainer as one of my picks for this week's $100,000 Fantasy Challenge on NBCSports.com. Detroit's secondary is torched on a weekly basis and Orton has quietly emerged as a matchup-based QB1 play by averaging 275 yards and two scores over the past five games. He's in line for a big game unless the Bears jump out to a huge lead early and it's not needed.

* Larry Johnson met Tuesday with commissioner Roger Goodell and speculation is that he'll be handed a multi-game suspension stemming from his latest assault charge. While the official ruling may not come this week, the Chiefs have already indicated that Johnson won't play Sunday against the Bucs, which would be his third straight missed game. www.kansascitychiefs.ws

Kolby Smith and Jamaal Charles have split snaps in place of Johnson during the past two games, but now Charles is expected to miss a significant chunk of time with a dreaded high-ankle sprain. That would leave Smith with nearly every snap while undrafted rookie Dantrell Savage backs him up. Despite a measly 3.4-yard average on 137 career carries and the Chiefs' struggles, Smith is worth a pickup.

Two-Minute Drill: Amid speculation that Peyton Manning is playing through some sort of arm or hand injury, general manager Bill Polian said Tuesday that "he has no injuries to speak of" and "there's nothing wrong with his arm" ? Coach Mike Tomlin announced Tuesday that Santonio Holmes will rejoin the starting lineup after being inactive last week following his marijuana-related arrest and he was quietly on a 960-yard pace before sitting out ? Daunte Culpepper said Tuesday that he had "a great workout and meetings with the Lions" and may be close to coming out of "retirement" to sign with Detroit ? Meanwhile, coach Rod Marinelli gave Dan Orlovsky a quasi vote of confidence Monday, saying that he won't start Drew Stanton just to evaluate him for the future ? San Diego's lack of pass rush got defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell fired Tuesday, as the Chargers replaced him with linebackers coach Ron Rivera ? Jermaine Phillips is expected to miss 4-6 weeks with a broken arm, making Sabby Piscitelli a solid IDP pickup ? After clearing waivers Tuesday for the second time, rookie Andre Woodson rejoined the Giants' practice squad.

Red Zone: Matt Hasselbeck (back, leg) has not been medically cleared to return and is expected to miss his fourth straight game Sunday, so Seneca Wallace will fill in again ? Jason Witten said Tuesday that he hopes to play through a broken rib, but his Week 9 status is questionable at best and he'll likely be a game-time call ? Coach Mike Tomlin revealed Tuesday that Ben Roethlisberger aggravated his shoulder injury in Week 8, but noted that he'll "continue to be week-to-week" and shouldn't miss any game time ? Aaron Rodgers (shoulder) hasn't resumed his regular throwing routine despite having the Packers' bye to rest, but remains a must-start QB1 even at less than full strength ? Michael Pittman (ribs), Selvin Young (groin), and Andre Hall (wrist) are all hurting for Denver, so a now-healthy Ryan Torain could have a sizable role in his NFL debut Sunday ? Willie Parker's (knee) status is still uncertain, so he'll probably split snaps with Mewelde Moore even if he returns this week ? Sidney Rice (knee) is close to full strength after the Vikings' bye and will rejoin the lineup opposite Bernard Berrian ? Oft-injured Donte' Stallworth aggravated his strained quadriceps Sunday.
