I fell asleep at the wheel last night...seriously!

Some may rejoice in what could have happened!

Yeah I drove back from the beach last night in the wee hours, fuck...I was battling the entire way back to stay awake, tried everything to stay awake....

Anyway , took me about 2.5 hours, I was within 15 minutes of making it, and started having a dream while driving down route 40! I snapped back out of sleep , I was probably 'out' for just a few seconds but none the less I was out and could have just fell asleep i suppose, something snapped me back awake...

I have felt terrible all day, anytime i think about what could have happened...and the worst part i wasn't driving alone, passenger asleep.

Anyone ever have this happen?

This is not the first time, I was driving back a couple years ago by myself and the same thing happened! I actually dozed off and went into a mini dream like state for a few secs.

I'm not one to fall asleep easy either , just freaked out, still!

I have had this happen a few times as well. I use to work evenings and would work over a lot. Those were the nights that the windows were rolled down and the radio was blasting.

Scariest time was when I had all the kids in the vehicle with me :(

It's crazy! I feel terrible about it...if I could I'd actually have a year of my life taken from me for such a mistake.

The past few yrs, i have been able to fall asleep so easily, I will start daydreaming (best way to describe it) and next thing I know I'm dreaming!

I would love to know how long I was driving while 'out' 50 mph straight road.

I was up at 6 am yesterday, spent the entire day driving around, active, this was around 4 am, I was awake for 22 hours .

It's amazing you wake back up, I do this when I have these mini dreams even if I'm laying on the beach (or in a tanning bed lol) Best I could remember I was thinking about a trip I'm taking later today, and I started dreaming about it, just went out...who knows it may have been 3 secs or 10, I have no idea.

Mine was always between two tiny towns. I would doze off after one and wake up before the curve of the other almost like clockwork (the waking up not the dozing off)

The ONLY thing I could be greatful for was that the road is almost always completely vacant at that time of night.

But if I had passengers........

yes, rt 40, ironically about the same area it happened two yrs ago...

nothing else to add, just feel guilty more than anything.

Re: I fell asleep at the wheel last night...seriously!

Driving tired is 5 million times worse and more dangerous than driving drunk, IMO. No amount of concentration, loud music, etc. can help you. One of the most helpless, scariest feelings you can experience.

Re: I fell asleep at the wheel last night...seriously!

JM,

I'm glad you woke up quickly.

Several years ago I would stay in Columbia some nights and wake up early the next morning to drive about an hour to work. Not a very long trip, but still had to get up early, and I usually went to sleep way too late. Anyway, alot of mornings I would have to close my eyes for 2 or 3 seconds intentionally just to keep me from falling asleep. It was stupid so I learned that stopping for coffee and a biscuit helped.

That is a shitty feeling for sure. I am glad you are thinking about what could have happenend, instead of your family wandering what did happen. I know sometimes you can't help it but I bet it will be a while before you do that again.

:cheers

Re: I fell asleep at the wheel last night...seriously!

Probably happens more than you think. It's happened to me several times over the years. When you work different hours during the week like I do stuff like this can happen. Once, around 93 or 94, I actually drove into a drainage ditch after falling asleep and hit a concrete pipe that allowed the water to flow under the driveway. The pipe was about three feet across and totalled my vehicle. I walked away without a scratch somehow.

I agree though, it's scary after it happens because of what could have happened.

i usually have the "youre in class bored and dozing off then flinch real hard for no apparent reason while everybody looks at you" at the wheel when ive been driving long distances or been up for a long time...i cant remember any of these incidents lasting over 2 seconds though...

if somebody was asleep for 10 seconds let alone 2 seconds...they should feel lucky they didnt get in a wreck...ive gotten to the point ill pull over and get a quick cat nap in me if i start to get in that doze off mode

Amazing that we somehow wake back up, just goes to show how easy it is to die like this...I knew a guy recently who died in a late night accident with no one else around and that is suspected what happened.

That is very sad to hear...

Thanks, and part of it is I still think I can do anything physically and I can't....I am not 25 anymore. I just assume I can drive 2.5 - 3 hours at 2am after being up about 20 hours...just plain stupid.

I was battling the entire ride back, from the time I left, and then there'd be times I would be wide awake and feel okay, 5 mins later back to battling it...

And the message here is, even if you know you gotta stay awake, maybe you can't, and you could be dead! Anyway this is really tough to accept.

Yeah I kept thinking what would everyone I know think happened and if we could have survived the accident, no seat belt either...passenger did have a seatbelt on, small sports car with airbags.

I'm having a hard time accepting this .

Re: I fell asleep at the wheel last night...seriously!

Almost happened, stayed up drinking and what not until about 6 in the morning, decided to leave for D.C. from Indiana right then instead of sleeping. Brilliant idea. 45 min into the drive, almost hit the guardrail, pulled into a rest stop area, turned the car off, fell asleep, woke up 2 hours later feeling like shit and sweating my ass off b/c it was May. got out of car, got a few bottles of water and red bulls, made the 9 hour drive home to surprise my mother a day early for mother's day. 'longest' drive of my life.

OMG, now that is a hike, that would seemed impossible.

Last yr I drove to Indiana (approx 12 hours) was there for less than 5 mins, turned around and drove home...I wasn't tired that time, just pissed!

I should have had a coke, probably would have been fine with one coca cola.

oh well, thanks for listening...off to Hershey Park Monday.

Re: I fell asleep at the wheel last night...seriously!

Years ago when I first opened up my restaurant it use to happen all the time from working around the clock.

I use to role down all my windows and crank up the radio in the car and would still doze off.

Then you get that funny little jumping type action and wake up.

Re: I fell asleep at the wheel last night...seriously!

it happened to me! thank god i have an angel on my shoulder!

i woke in the morning! i had that day off from work so i decided to go

to Atlantic City by myself it was 1 Hr and 20 min Ride!!

so i left like 8 PM got there around 9:30 and i played till 6 AM! lost lil bit!

back home it was dawn and i was going around 80 MPH!!

my eyes were shutting close time by time there were getting stronger

and they were shutting i was opening them!!

i had to slap my face about 5 times to wake me up

but after 5 min again it would shot down so i thought

I WOULD make it till the next stop at the gas station to i could park

and sleep but it did not HAPPEN!!

i fell asleep on the wheel! my eyes got shot and i was going fast on the

highway around 80 !!

the only thing that saved on the roads are the side markers

like if you somehow dont pay attention and ur car drifts to the side

of the road they will have those side roads that are cut!

so when u driive on them they will make a really weird noise!

and ur car will shake a little bit!!

BUT DUring that time i dont know how i kept my hands on the steering wheel the whole time!!

I DONT KNOW WHY I DID NOT DRIFT THE OTHER WAY or else

i could have died!! or be injured for the rest of my life!!

i really have not told anyone about it!! i am scared

Get a thick-ass rubberband to wear on your arm while driving. Snap that sucker as often as you need too(you can always feel sleep coming on). It will piss you off after a while, but you'll be a pissed-off awake driver !

I did the same thing a few years back going to the casino's when it was snowing out. I fell asleep on the way down and my tire hit the side closest to the grass median and pulled me into it. Scared the shit out of me but I was okay. Was a long ass night.
