Biggest Two-Weeks Of Gambling For Las Vegas Begins Thursday

So I'm reading my brand-new copy of Gaming Today this morning, and I learn some surprising information, based on casino executives at the Venetian and MGM Mirage.

In what two-week period do you think the most money is bet in Las Vegas during the year?

Well, get ready to drag out of the storeroom those extra baccarat and pai gow tables. It is, of course, the Chinese New Year. (This ain't exactly Cinco De Mayo, according to the high-end casino suits.)

According to MGM Mirage officials, the first weekend of the Chinese New Year is the second-biggest betting weekend of the year ahead of the Superbowl and behind the conventional New Year's holiday.

Who wouldda thought?

And, by the way, it's The Year of the Rat

It's the same way here in the northeast. Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun are both packed during Chinese New Year.

I guess with no more football left, I'll just be patrolling the table games pits of high-end casinos, hoping to find chips inadvertantly dropped by wealthy inebriated Asians.

The only place they drop chips is right back into the rack. None in the tip jar either.

Yep, talking to the dealers and cabbies, your wealthy Asians (Chinese New Year} and Hispanics (Cinco de Mayo/Diez y seis de Septiembre}, and any cowboy, wealthy or not (National Finals Rodeo), are the stingiest.

They claim it's "cultural differences" (even the cowboys).

Originally, the main entrance on the Strip was inside the mouth of a giant cartoon-like version of MGM's mascot, Leo the Lion, but this entrance feature was changed to a more traditional entrance; many Chinese gamblers avoided the casino or entered through the back entrance, due to the feng shui belief that entering the mouth of the lion was "bad luck."

A large bronze statue of Leo was added above the entrance to keep with the MGM Lion theme, while not scaring away their more superstitious guests. The statue weighs 50 tons, and at 45 feet tall, on a 25-foot pedestal, is the largest bronze statue in the U.S.

The renovation has allowed Leo to dine upon a more lucrative diet of superstitious Chinese gamblers. :+paranoid

And the number "4" is considered bad luck in Chinese culture, so some of the hotels number their floors from 37,38.39, 50, 51, etc.

But of course, they count those ten non-existent floors in their advertising when quoting the number of floors in their hotel.

Sorry to burst your bubble Jeff, but serious Chinese gamblers do not drink when they gamble. Glad you woke up though, all the people who knew two shits about Las Vegas and the gambling industry have known this for many years. This isn't news, except maybe to the ignorant folk who run this town's newspapers and TV stations.

Best place to stay is room 88 on the eighth floor.

Well, Wild Bill

You are the only one who doesn't get it. I try to burst my own bubble in my own posts, and I think I make it so over the top (but I guess not) that nobody could take it seriously.

But I have you.

Thank you for taking me seriously and your heartfelt explanation of Chinese drinking habits.

You can't make it up. Wild Bill, you extend my career.

Re: Biggest Two-Weeks Of Gambling For Las Vegas Begins Thursday

I am sure the Shrink will be happy to hear I extended your career Jeff...

Re: Biggest Two-Weeks Of Gambling For Las Vegas Begins Thursday

And now Wild Bill thinks I have a career...

I'm sure this career pays better than the one you had walking the town hunting down "off" parlay card lines now that your gig has been sniffed out by the bloodhounds behind the counters :LMAO:LMAO:LMAO

I have no idea what that means.

Why is the number 8 good luck to the Chinese. I see that some hotels are putting out special chips that are $8.

Re: Biggest Two-Weeks Of Gambling For Las Vegas Begins Thursday

I'm not the one profiting off of some slum-lord exploiting of illegals in LA.
Don't hate, congratulate!

In the meantime, keep passing out whore cards on the strip to passing tourists and looking for winning tickets in the gutter...

I put up a post trying to explain the next two weeks were important to Las Vegas gambling.

I'm sorry. I should have posted stuff about banging Hillary Clinton or what I had for breakfast.

So I wind up with this tag-team attack from Wild Bill and Jimmy Hoffa. It's like attracting sharks to the chum.

I don't understand their point.

Why is the number 8 good luck to the Chinese. I see that some hotels are putting out special chips that are $8.

The pronunciation of any number, in Chinese, is similar to a word which is then considered to be a meaning for the number.

Eight is similar to the word for prosper, wealth or fortune.

This year's Olympics are scheduled to open on 8/8/08 at 8:08:08 local time.
