Anyone actually been to The Bahamas before?

Trying to get an idea how much some of the local activities like snorkeling, golf, etc... are going to run. Breaking the bank for these plane tickets for me and the chica, and need to know how much spam I gotta eat between now and January 18th to save for the trip :)

I haven't been in 15 years but the food was expensive, the golf was expensive and the service sucked but they still added 20% tip to everything. We stayed at the Crystal Palace and the casino was nice. I hear Atlantis is nice but I'm sure it's not a place for people on a budget. On the other hand, the water was fantastic.

Stayed at Crystal Palace.

Food sucked.

Service sucked (seemed they were not that fond of whitey)

20% tip added on (I did not notice until day 2 when my wife asked why I was tipping so much for all the drinks My normal 20 plus their 20 was a nice tip).

Casino was pretty bummy. Crappy BJ rules.

Maybe I am being harsh, but I expected a lot more (kind of like when they brought the Star Wars movies back and gave me JAR JAR).

Re: Anyone actually been to The Bahamas before?

been twice but both times on a cruise.

Rode waverunners (something I can freakin' do at the lake any given weekend, but that's what they wanted to do...) and did parasailing.

Both were expensive but they did negotiate down. May parasail again because that was good times!

Food and drink was expensive.

We spent about a half day there both times. Aquarium stuff was very cool.

Don't remember much esle ;) :cheers:cheers

I echo Johnny Detroit's sentiments, in fact, he seems like a very pleased visitor compared to me. But at least this will make Vegas look good to yous guys in the future!

Granted a little extreme, but when people asked me about it upon return:

"Picture Detroit in the middle of the ocean......"

Was there last Feb for a week :houra

Weather was great, had 2 afternoons when the clouds did roll in.

IMO
Food was Wicked but $$$$ on the resort, depending on the Rest.
You can pick up burgers and sandwiches down by the marina for lunch kinda cheap. Burgers pool side are like 10$ I think. Staff come down to the beach to take orders, and the Strawberry and Banana Daqs are a must sitting in the sun :cheers

My two suggestions for dinner Outside Atlantis

1. A MUST, take a cab and ask them to drive you to the FISHFRY restaurants and get some local dishes. TD & I thought it was our best meal of the trip.
2. The PoopDeck...Yes POOPDECK lol. Just over the bridge and bang a left TD and I walked there, took like 20-25 min 1 way. We had the Fresh Lobster (picked my fat bastard myself lol ) best Ive had in Yrs.

TD and I did the parasailing together and that cost $80, $50 for 1 person
Guys on the beach will bug you to ride the jetski and go parasailing...Remember these words... "YOU READY BUDDY" LOL all day long. Other guys are selling tickets for the booze cruise party everynight.
Golf is easy over 100$ but worth the money, great track. Go early spend some time at the range. The Hotel shuttle will bring you to the proshop from the lobby.
If anyone need anything, ask for James in Security, he hooked me up. Tell him Coop from Canada sais High, or anyone working the beach :cheers

Have fun Boys :thumbsup

The cocaine usually costs less than dinner at the Atlantis. Guess that is good and bad at the same time.

Twice in mid-80's to Nassau. As stated earlier, everything (except rum) is very expensive as most everything has to be imported. Beer was $3 to $4 (20 years ago), a glass of milk (warm and nearly spoiled) about the same.

Your trip will not be enjoyable unless you are mentally prepared for slow, almost surly service and yes, the tip is included regardless of the level of service. Just plan to enjoy the surroundings and don't have high expectations service-wise and it will be okay.

If you like seafood (grouper and conch), I am told it is pretty good. Beef is outrageous, don't really remember about poultry. There is fastfood available (McDonalds, etc.) on the main island.

One local restaurant that I highly recommend is the Green Shutters Tavern. Lots of British food (great shepherd's pie) and Red Stripe beer. If I remember correctly it is a block or two up the hill from the government center in downtown Nassau.

As for transportation, taxis were plentiful and relatively inexpensive. I enjoyed riding the local jitney busses, however. They run regularly all day and go all over the island.

Both times I stayed in the Cable Beach area so don't have much info specific to Paradise Island. Did play golf once and it was awsome and not too expensive, although that was in August and course was nearly empty.

Looking forward to seeing all of you there, although I really wish we were going to Vegas. After this trip I have a feeling a lot of you will also wish the same.

VVV

p.s. MRS vvv and I plan to pack lots of beer and bottled water (don't drink their tap water), along with a bunch of snacks.
