The cheap frontrunners, claimers to be precise, performed well against the track takeout last year.

Hot Springs, Arkansas is a fabulous setting for thoroughbred racing.

The city loves the ponies.

Hot Springs also promotes theraputic spa treatments and proudly lays claim to being the "Boyhood Home of President Bill Clinton."

Checking the handle now.

Closing day is Saturday, May 2.

That's obviously Kentucky Derby Day.

Oaklawn, for many years, closed its meet on Arkansas Derby Day.

Ditto VD's comments.

I was impressed with Hot Springs, Arkansas.

The city comes alive during a race meet at Oaklawn Park.

Blueline,

Have you been to Oaklawn since the casino was put in there? Hot Springs is a great town but I haven't been there in many years.

Saturday's ten-race card features the $150,000 Mistletoe Stakes for three-year-old fillies going a mile-and-a-sixteenth.

I think Arkansas and the OP management screwed this one up. I have been to the property multiple times recently for projects and its just becoming another casino with an oh yeah, there's a racetrack over there mentality. With the layout of Hot Springs and how its always had these famous resorts around, why didn't they allow them to build a new casino resort with hotel somewhere away from the track so you get that crowd, while the racing crowd which still seems robust in season can enjoy the races without parking far away and having to deal with most of the traffic being for the casino. Plus have to say its a terrible location for casino patrons in terms of access, driving a mile down on a narrow city street to get there from the freeway is a lousy setup to bring in people who just want to play the slots for an hour.

Friday marks Day 1 of a 66-day meet at Oaklawn Park.

The meet concludes May 8.

Oaklawn is celebrating its 118th season.

The $1.25 million Arkansas Derby is set for Saturday, April 2, a full five weeks in advance of the Kentucky Derby set for May 7.
