New York Senator Wants to Add Fixed-Odds Horse Racing to State’s New Mobile Betting Market

In a statement to Casino.org, Pat McKenna, senior director of communications for the New York Racing Association (NYRA) said the organization that operates thoroughbred racing at Aqueduct, Belmont Park, and Saratoga Race Course supports Addabbo’s bill.

“Allowing horse racing content and wagering to coexist within the mobile sports betting marketplace would grow the sport in New York, deepen the industry’s economic impact and attract new fans,” McKenna said. “It would expand consumer choice by placing premium horse racing content on the same mobile shelf as other professional sports, which would generate $1 billion or more in additional gaming revenue for New York State.”

from the guy who runs MTH :

"...I think fixed-odds are, quite frankly, the future of the sport. It may be slow to start, but five years from now it will be a significant part of the handle."

Horseplayers cross over to sports betting with a natural ease whereas young sports bettors seem to have little or no interest in learning about the Sport of Kings.

And I'm old enough to remember The Sport of Kings establishment across the street from what was then the Las Vegas Hilton.

The Sport of Kings made a failed attempt, albeit a gallant one, at offering fixed-odds wagering.

The high-end players, unfortunately for the house, knew too much.

Some outcomes at northern California racetracks like Bay Meadows and Golden Gate Fields were preordained.

sometimes I wonder if I had to teach handicapping to someone who knew zero about the game how/where would I start ( tell them not play/run away)...got that joke out of the way

Whát's fixed odds betting going to do? Increase the handle 10% but cut bookmakers profit by 80%? Surprised anyone even wants to offer this on anything but major races.

The Sport of Kings had limits with their fixed odds offerings and yet they still had problems with the wiseguy action.

Though it was losses in the sports book that eventually caused the doors to close.

Never a good thing for a race and sports operator when your largest bettor (Billy Walters) has more bullets than you.

With fixed-odds wagering, the house only takes a limit bet when the linesmaker has made a significant error.

That was Bruce Karp's experience in 1993.

Karp was the oddsmaker on the race book side of the Sport of Kings.

Our friend Jack L was in charge when the Sport of Kings met its fate…he then migrated to Costa Rica to run CRIS…I had the pleasure of working with him for several years…

I first met Jack when he was running the Riviera race and sports book.

I'd guess 1987 or thereabouts.

Great guy.

As I recall, Lysaght was booking high in the days before Sport of Kings went belly-up.

Riviera with the glass tops and the 2 black push-buttons... one for up channel up...one for down

That's when some Las Vegas casinos catered to horseplayers.

Not anymore.

When Cantor and William Hill arrived in town, it was the beginning of the end for Nevada's race book industry.

The Coast Casinos still cater to them. Hold lots of tournaments.

Good point.

But there are no race books anymore at the Sahara or Tropicana or Ellis Island.

And look at brand-new Resorts World, they offer a sports book but no race book.

Tsk tsk.

BetMakers CEO Todd Buckingham doubled down on his stance at SBC North America Summit that fixed odds horse racing can be the most heavily bet-on sport in US - topping FB, BKB etc. likely will make first launch at Monmouth Park, partner of BetMakers

This is kooky talk, if you beat the closer on your first bet you will be limited, you don't have yo ever win just take +650 on a horse that closes 7-2 and you will be able to bet $5 a race. Do it again your limit will be $2.

Horse racing management of any kind are the most clueless assholes on earth( possible exception Biden and his team)

Can you imagine race bettors being forced into the modern sports book where there are seat fees and food/drink minimums? That would be good entertainment the first day to hear the responses of the old timer bettors. They almost started a war over getting charged for racing forms decades ago, imagine old man Frank being told he had to order a drink? "Bring me a tap water"

Blue, you got one good recall memory. i spent 1994 and 1995 in the Riviera Race book. i forgot about the glass top tv's until you mentioned it.
i was new to living in Vegas then. Riviera's sports book was by then a Leroy's. i was shocked to learn how little the ticket writers at Leroy's made.

Ellis Island had a racebook?

Hold the phone.

Checking with a good friend at the Las Vegas Dissemination Company.

I thought when Leroy's operated the sports book at Ellis Island that they also offered race wagering.

Your question has me questioning my memory.

Hmmm...

Ellis Island had a small race book. I hit a big exacta that paid $200+ while eating breakfast 10-12 years ago. I had it 8 times on a couple tickets. Writer was miffed as I tipped him $20. I think he was expecting more.

And now we have the answer.

Nothing worse than a casino employee with his or her hand out.

Thanks for checking in, BRAYDEN11.

In addition to that he made some backhanded comment about my winning ticket. He was a prickly guy, most likely a losing gambler. Never tipped him again.

Not a drinker but Ellis Island is known for its brewery.

For non-drinkers, homemade root beer is the way to go.

Delicious there.

The root beer is very good. Never was a fan of their micro brew but I’m old school and usually drink Miller High Life and Hamm’s. They used to offer a coupon in LasVegas Adviser for unlimited drinks for an hour for 2 people or something like that. Bartender got a healthy tip ever time I used that comp.

I'm trying to guess where it would be located...east side of the building?
Only been in there a few times to eat...never once saw a racebook area.

It was very a small enclave right between the old restaurant and the cage if I remember correctl, you could see the bar if you looked to west. So yeah, the east side of casino floor.

The Longhorn, haha.

Watch your back when departing the Longhorn.

Not long ago, a murder suspect and his female victim were seen on tape leaving the back entrance of the Longhorn.'

Fishing for the details of the story now.
