The Absolute Poker Cheating Scandal Blown Wide Open

The Absolute Poker Cheating Scandal Blown Wide Open - Freakonomics - Opinion - New York Times Blog
By Steven D. Levitt

<!-- end post-info -->A few weeks back I blogged about allegations of cheating at an online poker site called Absolute Poker. While things looked awfully suspicious, there wasn?t quite a smoking gun, and it was unclear exactly how the cheater might have cheated.

A combination of some incredible detective work by some poker players and an accidental (?) data leak by Absolute Poker have blown the scandal wide open.

You can read the first-hand account in the following thread at 2+2 Poker Forum, but here?s the short version:

Some opponents became suspicious of how a certain player was playing. He seemed to know what the opponents? hole cards were. The suspicious players provided examples of these hands, which were so outrageous that virtually all serious poker players were convinced that cheating had occurred. One of the players who?d been cheated requested that Absolute Poker provide hand histories from the tournament (which is standard practice for online sites). In this case, Absolute Poker ?accidentally? did not send the usual hand histories, but instead sent a file that contained all sorts of private information that the poker site would never release. The file contained every player?s hole cards, observations of the tables, and even the IP addresses of every person playing. (I put ?accidentally? in quotes because the mistake seems like too great a coincidence when you learn what followed.) I suspect that someone at Absolute knew about the cheating and how it happened, and was acting as a whistleblower by sending these data. If that is the case, I hope whomever ?accidentally? sent the file gets their proper hero?s welcome in the end.

Then the poker players went to work analyzing the data ? not the hand histories themselves, but other, more subtle information contained in the file. What these players-turned-detectives noticed was that, starting with the third hand of the tournament, there was an observer who watched every subsequent hand played by the cheater. (For those of you who don?t know much about online poker, anyone who wants can observe a particular table, although, of course, the observers can?t see any of the players? hole cards.) Interestingly, the cheater folded the first two hands before this observer showed up, then did not fold a single hand before the flop for the next 20 minutes, and then folded his hand pre-flop when another player had a pair of kings as hole cards! This sort of cheating went on throughout the tournament.

So the poker detectives turned their attention to this observer. They traced the observer?s IP address and account name to the same set of servers that host Absolute Poker, and also, apparently, to a particular individual named Scott Tom, who seems to be a part-owner of Absolute Poker! If all of this is correct, it shows exactly how the cheating would have transpired: an insider at the Web site had real-time access to all of the hole cards (it is not hard to believe that this capability would exist) and was relaying this information to an outside accomplice.

If this is all true, I presume that the two cheaters are looking at potential prison time. I would also guess that if Absolute Poker continues to argue that nothing out of the ordinary happened, they will take an enormous hit to their profits. Online poker is a game of trust ? players send their money to a site believing that they will be playing a fair game, and trusting that the site will send them their winnings. If there is even a little bit of uncertainty about either one of those factors, there is no good reason for a player to choose that site over the many close substitutes that exist. If I ran Absolute Poker, I would take a lesson from past corporate attempts at cover ups, sacrifice the cheaters, and institute safeguards to prevent this ever happening again.

The real lesson of this all, however, is probably the following: guys who aren?t that smart will figure out ways to cheat. And, with a little luck and the right data, folks who are a lot smarter will catch them doing it.

Re: The Absolute Poker Cheating Scandal Blown Wide Open

Cool! It amazes me that people who are smart enough to cheat aren't smart enough to not get caught.

Re: The Absolute Poker Cheating Scandal Blown Wide Open

I like to go to casinos now. Online poker is just too much for me. I play oline just for a little fun.

Cool little weekly $100 dollar tourneys. and it's a lot more fun playing in real life

There's a lot cheating like this going on. I know it.

It amazes me that an insider who make plenty already, would resort to cheating! I guess some are just so greedy that they will stop at nothing to make money!

This might be more widespread than just this incident, we have been investigating poker rooms for some time now and will share the results with everyone soon.

They got these guys cold. Looks to be an inside job worst of all, not just collusion, but insider trading by employees. The hand histories are damning. There was a link, from that above link that tells the entire story from the investigative man. He was tenacious. Got the ip addys, the observer tipping off hole cards, everything. I don't know about widespread, as this was an inside job. There could be, as these guys were just stupid as they were greedy. Somebody sharper could have kept this going a long long time. They just had to back off and play real cards once in a while. Some guy limps in, he folds pocket Kings because there are pocket ACE's at the blind. He folds. That is the type of hand you are better served playing through because it is so far against normal play to fold. Someone could get on a run playing bad like Moneymaker, or low %. This guy made every single play right, mostly wrong plays, for 20 straight hands. The site is still in denial, but the smoking gun is there to see. Awesome catch.

Reminds me of a story about something similar, a too good to be true winner. There was this pick 20 games newspaper contest. My entire family used to play it. You picked 10 NFL, 10 NCAA, no spreads, but there was a tie column.
it was a long time ago but if I remember correct NCAA games could end in tie. It was a long term contest, I won a few 2nd's and thirds, but never won it all. So soon there was this great change. On tough weeks 16 or 17 would win. Weeks with 3 or more big upsets. But there is a 20, someone aced it, calling all 4 big upsets, one entry per household. Boy were they lucky. It happened again, and again. Three weeks sthraight, someone finished 2 or 3 picks ahead of everyone. I told everyone, this is fixed, many suspected, but how? So just like these poker scammers, they got greedy. There was a tie that week, and sure enough, they marked it a tie. There was a huge outrage, made the local news and everything. No one could pick all 19 and a tie, impossible. So they investigated the winner, and the previous three week winners. They were all related to an employee of the newspaper. She was the envelope gatherer for the grader. Early in the week they would get an envelope with the contest address, and get it postmarked. Wait for all the games to come in, mark the contest sheet perfect, and she would slip that in, using a different address and family member every time. It was such a disgrace they ended the contest, fired here and sued for all the monies paid, and cops even tried to press charges. Again, they could have done it forever, if they had just used some discretion.

The point of all this, just the stupid greedy cheaters get caught.

Best Wishes...OF :smokesmal

If you have the time, go through the first link to the second link from that link, breaks down the entire investigation and the hand histories, also the observers movements.

I would say the worst scandal ever. Normally the players, some susoect house players of collusion. That has happened. No crooked cheating software has ever happened. This is house cheating. And these were no slouches, it was a $1,000 buy in tourney. I read the entire investigation, which now I can't find the link. They have them cold, but the site is still in denial. In fact, I think they case closed it as no problems found, there was this hand history leak, and the entire poker world went ape shit. Now independent investigation appointment. Never seen anything close to this ever.

From stonewalling the players to admsission of guilt, I knew this guy had the smoking gun with the ip addys. Absolute just confessed to being hacked by geek employee, vows to return all monies. Potripper goes down in flames. Might be penstripper. The super slueth that cracked the case, because someone sent him too much info is known on forums as Adanthar. He is my hero. He made Absolute reopnen a concluded investigation and gave them zero chances to refute it. Outstanding.

this is exactly what i was thinking while i was reading the 1st post. It seemed just too blaitant for the part owner to be logged in with a tracable ip addy with the intention of cheating. This had hack job written all over it. no way absolute would be so dumb to set up a huge site and software only too blow it on a cheap scam attempt. lets face it doing this randomly by absolute on purpose wouldnt even show as a blip on their bottom line
, risk not worth the reward for absolute.

..>>> greed is good..!! sez gordon gekko

A woman who owned a string of service stations ; had over 100 million in profits; actually paid pump "mechanics" to short the customer by about 1-2%; , she got caught; actually nserved prison time; never apologized ; just felt bad about "getting caught"..

Let the spin control start.

Already commenced, geek wanting to prove security was not infallible, what better way to show your own company that then by hacking your way in, observing hole cards and stealing money from every legit player in there, for who knows how long. First attempt was, we have no secuirty lapses, impossible. Then when smoking gun is thrown in their faces, blame the geek. You could spin this one forever, but results come out the same. An insdier, employee of the company, cheated. Broke the sacred trust. Now every player out there will say, they are all like that.

I read at another site that the Mohawks of the Kahnawake reserve in Quebec own Absolute Poker. If so, we have the Kahnawake Gaming Commission "investigating" their friends, neighbors and licensees from the next street over on the res. This stinks to high heaven!
