Canada, Australia, Macau Join WTO Compensation Claim Group

And then there were seven. Canada, Australia and Macau have joined the list of countries who have joined Antigua & Barbuda in its World Trade Organization battle against the United States.

Along with India, Costa Rica and the European Union (which actually represents the interests of 27 countries), the new additions to the list place further obstacles in the U.S.'s expressed desire to withdraw from its WTO trade commitments concerning online gambling without any form of compensatory penalty. Several other countries, including Japan, maintain their status as parties of interest regarding the original dispute.

President Bush and several trade diplomats have met with Antiguan officials in recent days, with recent U.S. statements indicating a conciliatory stance toward the island nation, while denying that other nations' claims have merit.

In referring to the Antigua claim, U.S. Trade Representative spokesperson Gretchen Hamel stated, "We will continue to work with Antigua and Barbuda to try to find a mutually satisfactory resolution to this dispute."

Nonetheless, Antigua has pressed forward with its motion to remove the United States' international property-rights protections as the working basis for the $3.44 billion annual claim filed last week. Barring an unlikely short-term resolution of the dispute, the U.S. is believed likely to file a motion for arbitration in response to the WTO claims, which would delay an official WTO resolution for several more months.

Re: Great News For Online Gambling...

The fact that President Bush and some of his officials are already meeting and sitting down together with Antigua to talk is a very positive step...

The fact that other FIRST WORLD countries are also joining in can also be interpreted as a positive, although their motives are suspect IMHO..

Any news like this is good.

I am still pissed that some politician could step in and tell me what I can or can't do in the privacy of my own home.

A ray of light. Maybe.

Dont know if id use the word great yet but a move in the right direction I dont think anything new happens before 2009 when we get a new commander and cheif.

Current one does it his way no matter what other countrys suggest.

Re: Great News For Online Gambling...

This is OLD news and it is blown way out of proportion. The minister from Antigua during last week's meeting of CARICOM approached the President and asked him about the WTO decision. Bush replied, "yes I'm aware of the dispute, and I'll have someone look into it." What did you expect him to say? Yeh, I know about it and I don't give a flying f'ck about you, your country, or your bookie operations.

The stall is on. Next meeting of the WTO will be July 24. At that time the US will ask for arbitration which buys them more time to next season's Super Bowl. Before arbitration is finalized, they'll make this ridiculous proposal to Antigua asking for a year study on Internet gambling by the gov't which appears like they're acting in good faith. Then............new President and new topic. The United States has successfully dragged this out for four years, and they will continue to do so.

The drag will become expensive within the next 18 months... They can prob drag for arbitration - maybe 3 months and after that they are gonna get hit with penalties. Antiguas not gonna accept a study after winning the case...

Re: Great News For Online Gambling...

When Bush was Gov of Texas he was in favor of the lottery...I know it is not internet gambling, but it shows some willingness to let people spend that kind of money to bring in money. I think the only thing I can see as positive is actually one of his weakness and that is he is greedy. Maybe he will aid in getting this pushed back and at some point we can get the whole shebang regulated, then maybe some stateside operations to compete with the offshore industry? Wishful thinking maybe I guess...

Re: Great News For Online Gambling...

The US won't act until the sting of sanctions is in effect. It took years to finally act against a painful set of sanctions that came from helping out Boeing and other exporters for a long time. Once the sanctions hit it made it clear they weren't going to wiggle out of them. To make matters worse Congress said ok, here you go and they changed the laws, but really did nothing. They just changed one set of declared illegal subsidies and changed them to slightly less illegal subsidies which led to another WTO action. They can carry this on for years and years, in which time they will try to set up a framework that excludes a whole lot of gambling, namely sports, and then put that out there. It will still discriminate against foreign companies and will lead to even more actions.

This just doesn't seem to lend itself to some overnight decision to admit they were wrong and have a beneficial change. It will take at least a decade to get a good change which we might like, but by then I fully expect the gaming world to be a different situation with new issues to deal with.

Of course not. There will always be suppliers to the market. They just won't be government sanctioned and regulated. What happens in these things is good regulation crowds out bad regulation. But if there is no good regulation, then bad regulation survives. I think it will be a long long time until there is good regulation for us sports bettors. No matter we have been betting illegally or in grey areas for decades, why should we worry about getting to the legal stage now? I really think most of what is going on affects casino games and poker, sports is going to be the ignored stepchild for quite some time longer.
