I hope AZ arrests 50,000 people on betting misdemeanor charges and I hope every last one of them requests a jury trial.

If they all just settle for a fine, this type of extortion will happen over and over.

The authorities are fighting a losing battle. They'll fight it forever, but they will never win.

Just about every day, you can read about a hooker busted somewhere, yet you can hire a hooker.

Just about every day, they seize a big ass batch of cocaine, yet you can buy coke.

They'll keep busting agents from time to time, but they arent even touching the iceberg. They bust like 100/month. I would guess there are at least 5million agents/bookies in the US.

Sean

Sean,
I'm concerned about your reasoning, or lack thereof. Of course the government wins when they bust agents and confiscate millions of dollars. No, the government will never totally eliminate gambling, but it is still a loss for the players/agents/sportsbooks when the government does this kind of bust.

And concerning your advice for all cited gamblers to ask for a jury trial, not everyone is interested in cutting off their noses to spite their face! The judge will NOT let the jury interpret the law; he will give specific instructions to the jury to find the gambler guilty if the gambler violated the AZ law against internet gambling. So the gambler will face a higher fine, possible time in prison, and definitely higher court costs if he chooses a jury trial over the states offer of a fine and court costs.

Sean, I thought you were saying the same thing as I have been saying these past 3 months, ie. there is NO good reason for anyone to be playing/sending money offshore right now. The situation is way too unpredictable as further evidenced by this latest bust.

Too bad he didn't expend his energies and department to catch those serial killers in Phoenix who killed a ton of people over the last 10 years, many right on the streets.

I have gotten a few emails regarding Sheriff Arpaio over the years. Needless to say, hes a tough SOB.

Sorry about double post.

Too bad he didn't expend his energies and department to catch those serial killers in Phoenix who killed a ton of people over the last 10 years, many right on the streets. Those are real victims.

Pioneer,

I agree with you. I would not bank in the US and gamble large sums of money offshore. If you're gambling large sums of money offshore (Which I do think is stabilizing) you are much better off wiring it in and out of Canada.

5 million bookies/ agents in the USA ( about 300 million population). So 1 out every 60 people is a bookie/agent ?

That seems an awfully high estimate.

Aren't a lot of players just direct post-up players with the books, and not involved with agents and locals ?

I haven't read the full article-but are we talking about Books that are NOT located in Antigua? (this being the nation which has won the WTO case. Not saying that in itself has a major factor; but didn't see Antigua books mentioned. Then again I don't keep up with what book is where except for one or two books).

Asking one more time--were the books/agents/ people involved with this only in Costa Rica ? (as for as a non-US country)? Not talking about "players."

Re: Major Online Gambling Bust: 4 Agents arrested, dozens pending!!!

Beginning at 7 a.m. Tuesday, 200 deputies and volunteer posse members went armed with warrants for people in the Phoenix area, as well as Los Angeles and Las Vegas. They arrested 31.

"volunteer posse "

Does that mean RATS?

That Sheriff is Like Wyatt Earp man... Real Outlaw type. does things his way. He was the one who started the All volunteer Posse to round up Illegals. They have a small Police force and then half the damn town is in the POsse to help them when needed...He thinks it is 1885 Tombstone I reckon

Is it possible Cris, etc were being run out of the states? I would like to think the owners are smart enough not to be here these days, but nothing surprises me anymore.

My guess is these were just big agents, now accused of owning the sites, but if they were indeed the owners they are retarted.'

A new Angle/ Question on all this.
I'm weary of reading all the details about all of this particular event. Once again and (i promise) for the very LAST time; is ANY book in Antigua involved here?

They (Antigua) have taken ( what I'd call the high road) through the WTO.

Costa Rica (again I have no idea) only a guess, is nothing AT-ALL like Antigua.

None of the books mentioned are in Antigua although some may have opened offices there and recently applied for licenses.

Doesn't matter though - Antigua never requested the right to take bets and collect money in person in the United States. State law rules there.

IF Antigua does the right thing --they will WIN a Major battle here. They have to step up and enforce all their laws --background checks--whatever (Maybe a hold on some ).
They Can WIN with carefull dilligence! IMO!

Not a chance in hell. Not many books looking to go there. To much TAX, and fee's and black boxes on servers

That sheriff seems like he's trying to get the prison to turn a profit.

Yeah, the volunteer posse wasnt so interested back when some guy was mowing people down with drive bys, but you get the chance to seize $200mm from non violent people and half the town wanted in... Who for a second doesn't think some cash is missing?

Do you still say 5 million,Sean ?

I can't believe that number

Is it 5 million? I don't know, but it is a lot. Maybe it's 2 million. Maybe it's 6 million. It likely depends on what you count... Do you count guys who lay off bets for one or two friends? Do you count guys who have one client? Do you count guys who only do football season or just did it last year.

I would venture to guess I have met over 100 people who have or do take bets and I've never looked for them.

If you are only talking big time agents (Full time income) I would guess a couple hundred thousand - still a number that hitting 50 is meaningless.

100 is a lot different than 5 million! And if you're one of the 50, or one of the 50's customers, then it is certainly not meaningless! In that case, you're a double loser...you lose your betting money, and you get fined and/or imprisoned.

I didn't say 100. I said hundreds of thousands. If I had to guess, I would guess 3-5 million have taken bets of some sort. I would guess between 700k and 1.5million are active full time bookies.

Sean is right about the amounts. By legal definition they always exaggerate because any money these people have they claim its ill-gotten funds. This is such a crock, the guy could have owned his house for 20 years and got into this business 2 years ago, but the Feds will try to repo it because they can.

Agents in their minds might be some guy with a 10 person sheet he rounded up from the office. The guy could have a regular job and the money made from his agent dealings be a tiny part of his earnings, yet the Feds might try to take out everything he has as if gambling was his one and only enterprise. We don't know how they approach this and how far down the list they are going to look.

Further realize organized crime is such an easy catch-all. If you and a few buddies run a business, you are organized and could be seen as "mafia". The news people are stooges, they love to say mafia involvement even though most organized crime figures aren't Italian anymore.

I agree - I know someone whose home was raided yesterday and most of their possessions have nothing to do with the gambling - I think this is a publicity stunt for Arpaio.
