Shawn Michaels by a landslide.
Didn't follow the "script" years ago in a match vs Brett "The Hitman" Hart.
Hart was supposed to retain his title, in which would be his last match before heading to Ted Turner's WCW.
Hart lost the match on home soil to boot.:finger004

I vote for the Honky Tonk Man. The problem with the heels in the list is that they still all had their share of fans. In terms of being a "best heel of all time", it has to be someone that was so hated by the fans that even fans who like rooting for bad guys still just can't root for them.
So the Honky Tonk Man fits that criteria well. They started him off as a face and he would get booed out of the building every night despite his music and dancing. So then they made him a heel and he became the kind of heel not even the hardest core of heel fan could root for. He always got lots and lots of air time but people just hated him so much. But that's what helped make his gimmick work for so long.

I almost voted for the Iron Sheik - another guy no one in the building could root for. But he had a good gimmick to make people hate him and I think it's a case of people hating the gimmick more than the wrestler.
Nikolai Volkoff warrants consideration also but again the "Russian" gimmick at that time was an easy sell as well. And he eventually became a face so to me that takes away from his past a little.

You're right - he's way up there on the list and I thought of him as well. I saw Rick Rude wrestle a few times in person and he really did know how to get the crowd hating him. Who could forget all of his insults to the crowd - "Cut the music! All you South Carolina sweathogs keep the noise down while I take my robe off..." And unlike almost anyone else in the business, he was a heel for his -whole career- in both the NWA and the WWF.
But Rick Rude was just too cool for me to make him number one. And the guy's wrestling ability alone was enough for him to have fans - unlike the Honky Tonk Man.

He was a mad man and it got over big time!

It was vicious even while it went on during the Gulf War and would be way worse now for sure. I can't really put Slaughter in a best heel sort of list because he spent so many years as a top face in the business, but he was sure hated like hell while that whole thing was going on.

What added fuel to the fire was the fact that his rivalry was with the most loved WWE wrestler of that time....HULK HOGAN. If he did the Iraqi thing against a guy like Jake the snake or Macho Man that would be bad enough, but his angst was against the United States and HOGAN, which made it alot worse!

Yeah, it was a good build up to Hogan facing him at WM for the title. I think it would have worked better if Slaughter had a longer title reign to build up more heat, but the WWF hated having heel champs. Then the feud just went from there with Slaughter throwing fire at Hogan and things like that. They got a good 6+ months out of that feud.

Those are all some great clips! Anything with the Four Horsemen is always worth watching - they were the best! And the TedDiBiase gimmick was great also - he literally carried the WWF once Hogan-Andre had to die off.

Those are some more good ones! Piper carried the WWF as their best heel for years. He was the only reason to tune in sometimes!
And the Freebirds during the mid-80's set big time standards for heelness! Their feud with the Von Erichs put World Class wrestling on the map back then.

When Savage was a heel, he was always one of the best. And he would always half of the arena cheering him on because he was that cool.
Jesse "The Body" Ventura - easily one of the best announcers ever and really brought the "heel" announcer role to the importance it needed to make broadcasts a lot better. Most people remember him more for the announcing and not the wrestling. And of course, he's been famous since then for a lot of other things!

Jesse "The Body" Ventura - easily one of the best announcers ever and really brought the "heel" announcer role to the importance it needed to make broadcasts a lot better. Most people remember him more for the announcing and not the wrestling. And of course, he's been famous since then for a lot of other things!

He supposedly was, but they took it to the extreme for his "Mr. Perfect" gimmick. A good gimmick while it lasted. But it didn't work well anymore once he finally started losing matches. Hennig was one of the best wrestlers of our generation. It's too bad he spiraled down and died as young as he did.

"Austin 3:16 says I just whipped your ass!!!" - This interview made Steve Austin's career! He was always a good wrestler before then and I liked him a lot even in his WCW and World Class days. But this was the start of his huge WWF push and made him (and his gimmicks) a household word!

I think my favorite DiBiase clip was when he bribed the lifeguard at the pool to make all the kids get out of his so he could sit there himself. It was one of the best WWF gimmicks. I read DiBiase's book where he talked about how him and Vince McMahon thought it all up. He talked about how the WWF would give him all the cash to carry around with him and he did with it what he pleased to make the gimmick work. DiBiase entered the WWF with a lot of hardcore fans knowing he was always a great wrestler, but his gimmick made him that much more famous and a huge draw back then.

Orndorff's run in the WWF as a heel made his career. He was one of those wrestlers that would never win titles but still be the guy everyone wanted to see in action. Sid did injure quite a few people when in the ring because of botching moves. Brian Pillman's shoulder was completely messed up because of being powerbombed the wrong way. The guy had all kinds of problems with discipline. He always had potential to one day carry the torch for the whole industry much like Hogan did but a bad ego and attitude kept costing him throughout his career.

I thought Greg Valentine was a great wrestler over the years. And he had to stay heel for most of his career because his character was always kept pretty bland. Eudy would be scheduled to face Steiner once again at the main event of the 2001 WCW PPV Sin. Prior to the match, members of WCW management felt that Eudy needed to broaden his arsenal of wrestling moves and suggested that he try an aerial maneuver despite his unwillingness. During the match, Eudy consequently suffered a leg fracture when it snapped following his leap from the middle turnbuckle in an attempted Big Boot.
The fracture, caught on video, was deemed too graphic by many TV stations.<SUP class=reference id=_ref-2>[3]</SUP> Eudy broke his left leg in half, snapping the both tibia and fibula in his leg with at least one of the bones breaking through the skin.<SUP class=reference id=_ref-3>[4]</SUP>

Yeah - that injury pretty much ended his career.
I remember a lot of real in-ring injuries on live television. Like the time Buff Bagwell landed the wrong way during a Monday Nitro match and they had to stop the card for a half hour trying to get him out of the ring.
